X In Memoriam lThis message was delivered to the student body of Lyman Hall High School by Principal John Price on November 26, 1963.1 Last night, in a small plot of ground in Arlington National Cemetery, a fire burned brightly in the surrounding darkness. Beneath it, enfolded within the Virginia soil, lay the body of our beloved late President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. This man, young, vigorous, and effervescent in life, has, in his un- timely death, etched his name and memory in the annals of history. In Berlin a square will be named for him, in London a monument will be erected in his honor, in our own nation flags will be flown at half-staff for thirty days. But these things, in the long view, will be empty tokens, if in years to come future generations ask Who was Kennedy? There is little likelihood that this question will ever pass the lips of a solitary human being. For, in life, as in his de- mise, John Kennedy's whole political philosophy was made clear to the nations of the world. He lived to make a virtual contagion of our own way of life. Freedom for the world's peoples was his goal. He deplored such evils as hunger, illiteracy, and bigotry. Yet he died - a victim of that very bigotry. We who have been comtemporaries of Kennedy have an enviable legacy which we can in turn bequeath to the genera- tions who come after us. Let us be inspired by the eternal flame which glows above his tomb. Let us not forget to be grateful that in our lifetimes, John F. Kennedy passed our way. Shakespeare said it many years ago: Here was a man. Whence comes such another?
