X In Memoriam lThis message was delivered to the student body of Lyman Hall High School by Principal John Price on November 26, 1963.1 Last night, in a small plot of ground in Arlington National Cemetery, a fire burned brightly in the surrounding darkness. Beneath it, enfolded within the Virginia soil, lay the body of our beloved late President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. This man, young, vigorous, and effervescent in life, has, in his un- timely death, etched his name and memory in the annals of history. In Berlin a square will be named for him, in London a monument will be erected in his honor, in our own nation flags will be flown at half-staff for thirty days. But these things, in the long view, will be empty tokens, if in years to come future generations ask Who was Kennedy? There is little likelihood that this question will ever pass the lips of a solitary human being. For, in life, as in his de- mise, John Kennedy's whole political philosophy was made clear to the nations of the world. He lived to make a virtual contagion of our own way of life. Freedom for the world's peoples was his goal. He deplored such evils as hunger, illiteracy, and bigotry. Yet he died - a victim of that very bigotry. We who have been comtemporaries of Kennedy have an enviable legacy which we can in turn bequeath to the genera- tions who come after us. Let us be inspired by the eternal flame which glows above his tomb. Let us not forget to be grateful that in our lifetimes, John F. Kennedy passed our way. Shakespeare said it many years ago: Here was a man. Whence comes such another? The staff of the SIGNER IS indebted to the Choate School of Wallingford for per mission to use this picture of the late President Kennedy. The portrait in oils was painted by William Draper and presented to Choate President Kennedy's Alma Mater, in i963 Qt baii i , It hangs in the Andrew Mellon Library of the, School. Dedication Mr. John Mitchell Mr John Mitchell loaned the Wallingford school system in 1938 after having re ceived his Bachelor ot Science degree from New York University and later his Master of Arts in business education Mr Mitchell teaches otiice practice clerical practice and typevvrnting He has also been the Business Adviser of school publications gratitude for your untirmng eftorts on our behalf Because ot your unselish devotion and continual service you have proved to be an invaluable friend to our class Al though you are leaving us this year we will always remember you We, the Class of I964, dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. Mitchell, with deepest ln Appreciation To you, Miss Quint, we are deeply grate- ful for your unseltishness as a teacher and as a friend. We are indebted to you tor the many things you have done for us. Our sincere appreciation is extended to you, Miss Dederick, for your thoughtfulness and your deep interest in the students at Lyman Hall. Having known you has made our lives richer and fuller. Mrs. Bohannah, to you we owe our many thanks for your sincere desire to help us in all that we have done. As adviser and teacher you have been invaluable to us all. J' If F MR. JOHN PRICE, A.B., Ed.M Principal To the Graduates of I964: You have come to a fork in the road of life. The sign posts point clearly in different directions. The mileage either way varies but little in measured kilometers. The destina- tions, however, are at extreme poles. The choice is yours to make. The one road is the path to success through effort, perseverance, and self- sacrifice. It winds in serpentine fashion through chasms and valleys of challenge and temptation. lt is the expert trailmaker who finds his route safely home. The other highway is level and direct. No inclines, no ruts, no detours bar the way. lt is, in truth, an easi to the pioneer. er route to follow, but ultimately offers little satisfaction The allegory is clear. The happy, secure, self-reliant man will choose the more difficult pathway. He will often feel closeted within the maze, but he will eventually come to the end of the road. There he will stand - in the aura of his own light. Administration MR. VINCENT INGLESE, B.S., M.S. MR. RAYMOND MAHAN, Ed.B., M.S. Assistant Principal Assistant Superintendent of Schools MR. Sophomores, under the direction of Mrs. Dolores Fox, receive various tests to acquaint them with their own personalities and capabilities. Further- more, they are made aware of the many programs offered at Lyman Hall and are guided in their selections so that they made may be prepared for whatever future they choose. Juniors still continue to investigate their own potentials and their suita- bility for different careers, under the guidance of Mr. Melvin Stone. For seniors, the necessity of for- mulating future plans becomes a must. They are given opportunities to confer with college representa- tives and to consult The Guidance Department's vast library of school catalogues. Because this was such an important year in their school career, a Junior Rep- resentative council was chosen to guide the class in making wise decisions. The first major event was the production ot THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, a huge success because ot the effort expended by so many Juniors. As a symbol of their recognized status in our school, the Junior Class selected and received class rings. May brought flowers, and the Junior Prom, traditionally a farewell to the Seniors. Led by the able leadership of Miss Rosa Brown, and her assistants, Miss Patricia Licari, and Miss Linda Burns, the Junior Class made this year a memorable one. Class History Events are now history - a history which is dijerently interpreted, differently recounted and dijerently labeled among various observers . . . Let us recognize both the gains we have made . . . and the great distance yet to be covered. We, as the first of larger classes, came to Lyman Hall uncertain of our plans and future, but we knew that un- derstanding and guidance would aid us along our path. The years behind us had gone so swiftly that we were now conscious that our three years at Lyman Hall would be very brief. Because we were such a large class, we knew that unity would be our key to success. With this factor in mind, we began to organize with the election of officers by petition. Kevin Deary was chosen president, and David Pagni, Joan Gudain, and Lorriane Binnette were elected vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively. In order to have a better representation of our large class in its many decisions, the following students' were elected to our Sophomore Representa- tive Council under the help and guidance of our class advisers, Mr. McGahie and Miss Anderson: Sue Andrews, Robert Bailey, Diane Boyle, Richard Butcher, Robert Christman, Linda Cosenza, Kevin Deary, Ro- berta Dubar, Edward Crocco, George DeSola, Laurel Gawrych, Michele Gfywalski, Robert Gustafson, Joan Gudain, Judith Journot, Kermit James, Kathy Kristan, Charles Kingsland, Ronald Marks, Claudia McKinstry, Charles Malaguti, Helene Namnoum, Beverly Parsons, Ernest Mrazik, Ed Nowak, Elaine Provencher, John O'Neil, Audrey Rusiak, Molly Sullivan, Robert Strossi, Bryan Van Deun, Judith Torgerson, Laura Wilson, and Karl Woodrow. To the Student Council, foundation of our entire student body representation, we elected Honora Bukow- ski, Leah Bethke, Elizabeth Boldizar, Marion Donovan, Joan Gudain, Charles Malaguti, John Mango, George DeSola, Robert Strossi, Ed Nowak, Patricia Konopka, and John O'Neil to represent our sophomore class. As a class and as individuals we began participat- ing in various school activities. We were represented on the Junior Varsity Basketball Team by Ken Fritz, Joe Wolak, Art Papale, Dana Lindsey, Richard Butcher, Bill McNulty, Ron Marks, Wayne Ferrari, Joe Woitasik, Mike Resnick, Charles Kingsland, Billy Gerace, and' John O'Neil. Helping to cheer them on were the Junior Varsity Cheerleaders: Pat Konopka, Bev Par- sons, Ona Oster, and Carol Robitaille. April brought the showers and Twilight Time, the theme of the most important event, the sophomore dance, under the chairmanship of David Pagni. Final exams found us more serious, more studious, and a little wiser than in September. We had learned to appreciate the guidance of the faculty and admin- istration, to tolerate the superiority of the upperclass- men, and to work together as a class. When we returned in September we once again found homework, school books, and early morning announcements. Having grown in stature, awareness, and ability, we began our Junior year eager to demonstrate our courage and initiative. We became active participants in many class and school activities. To lead us as juniors, we elected Robert Strossi, president, Bob Christman, vice-president, Joan Gudain, secretary, and Kermit James, treasurer. Our Junior Representative Council consisted of Kathy Kristan, Charles Kingsland, Dolores Malo, Sharon Leione, Linda Manley, Fred Meltabarger, John O'Neil, Helene Nam- noun, Sandra Parylak, Judson Page, Laureen Porto David Pagni, Leah Bethke, Gary Ames, Diane Boyle, Elizabeth Boldizar, Jacqueline Boyd, Robert Christman Kevin Deary, Richard Butcher, Roberta Dubar, George DeSola, Fred Gordon, Michele Grywalski, Joan Gudain, Judith Journot, Robert Strossi, Carol Skubby, Molly Sullivan, Bill Tester, Judith Torgerson, Bryan Van Deun, Carrine Wheeler, Laura Wilson, and Francine Zottoli. They helped us decide .our class colors, blue and white, and our motto, You stand in your own light. A further decision was made with the help of our class ring committee headed by Bob Strossi, The vote was overwhelmingly in favor of the college style ring over the usual black onyx style. The traditional class play was our first maior class endeavor. Under the direction of Miss Person, our Junior play, The Importance of Being Earnest, was a great success. Judith Journot, Hattie Sittnick, Karen Backstrom, Gary Ames, Carl Bandecchi, and Daniel Ruderman played leading roles. We were active once more in sports. After a hard- luck season, the football team elected Bob Christman and George DeSola to be co-captains in the i963-64 season. Doubling on the Junior Varsity and the Varsity Basketball teams were Ken Fritz, Bill McNulty, and John Fiora. On the baseball team we were represented by John O'Neil, Gary Maichrzak, Joh Ferreira, Art Papale, Mike Cholesky, Leonard Liptak, Ken Fritz, George DeSola, and Tom Dokas. Honey Bukowski, Pat Konopka, Bev Parsons, Ona Oster, and Carol Robitaille helped cheer at all Lyman Hall sports events. With the coming of spring came probably our biggest event, the Junior Promenade. Under the able leadership of Joan Gudain, general Chairman, we created a world of Fantasia, a gigantic flower garden with soft music and subdued lighting. We were, of course, busy with our studies through- out the year. Adding incentive to our studying was the new quality point grading system. Many of us, antici- pating future years, took the College Board Exams. Several Juniors were honored for their scholastic record and service by being initiated into the National Honor Society. These were Theresa Wyzkowski, Jane Poropatich, Ed Miles, Pat Konopka, Mary Ann Bryda, Helene Namnoun, Karen Backstrom, Laura Wilson, Wayne Carlson, Faith Smith, Virginia Richards, Susan Kezi, Anita Cwirka, Marcia Hoff, and Margaret I I Mottram. Representing us on the Boys' State and Girls' State were Ed Nowak, George DeSola, Mary Ann Bry- da, Jane Poropatich, Rita Gerber, Janice Kontnick, and Kermit James. ln June, as we looked back over the many activities of our class, we thought with gratitude of the generous aid given by our class advisers, Miss Brown, Miss Burns, and Miss Licari. We then closed our school books and bid farewell to our teachers as we anticipated a summer of relaxation and sunshine . . . Give Light, and the darkness will disappear. CErasmusJ Returning in September as seniors, we felt the great responsibility of assuming positions of leadership. ln our first class meeting we nominated class officers and later elected John Mango, President, Kermit James, vice-president, Joan Gudain, secretary, and John O'Neil, treasurer. Soon after elections we began work on our great event, our Senior Prom. Directing us was Lorraine Binnette who was aided by Pam Lape, Mary Ann Bryda, Joan Gudain, and Leah Bethke, as committee chairman. On November ninth we entered a setting of regal splendor and elegance, our Fleur de Lis. The high point of the evening came when Mr. Price, our principal, crowned our lovely queen, Joan Gudain, as her pretty attendants, Michele Grywalski and Bev Par- sons, looked on. Following the prom, many seniors helped plan the first L.H.H.S. Homecoming Weekend. Though saddened by the death of our nation's vigorous President, John F. Kennedy, we went on with this Thanksgiving event. On Wednesday evening there was a pep rally and bonfire, which was lit by the Homecoming Queen, Elizabeth Boldizar. The football game on Thanksgiving morning brought some cheer as we won our first game. Especially helping us to win the Bean Pot Trophy were two touch- downs by Steve Wells, a fellow senior. To close the Homecoming festivities, a dance was held honoring the Alumni. ln rapid succession there followed hours of prepara- tion for Mid-Term Exams Ceven more important now with the new averaging systemi, the basketball season with Bill McNulty as captain of our varsity, completion of the SIGNER under the capable hands of Jane Poropatich and her hard--working staff, our Senior Class Play, school evaluation, the spring sports, with Dana Lindsey and Bob Reed captaining our baseball team and Bob Christman as captain of track, preparation for our Senior Banquet at Restland Farms, and Final Exams. Now it is graduation and the final realization that our years at Lyman Hall have ended. Suddenly our class motto has new meaning for us. We must go forth on our own, guided by what we have learned during our school years, to make our way as individuals in an ever increasingly complicated world. We now find added truth in our motto: You stand in your own light.
