Our lives flow on like the ceaseless progression of time,- yet, beyond the shadows of ignorance, there lies a golden life. Our years in high school have been a chronicle of important events. Soon we will leave the building which was the center of our educational and recreational activity. Yes, we will leave a building, but its memories will always be with us. To help preserve these meaningful events we have chosen a theme which symbolizes our lives most closely. We feel that the world is ours to enrich. We realize that our capabilities extend far beyond the limits that we have set for them. Thus, through our yearbook, we wish to affirm that there exists a Golden Life in the future. It is there, but it is for us to find the path which will lead us to the gold, our attainment of success and happiness. The gold does stand before us. We have only to reach out with our knowledge and understanding and take our portion. Shapeless, sizeless, invisible, but priceless, this gold will someday illuminate man's great fog of misunderstanding and shine on the pathway to peace. Dedication ANNA S. KRUSE We, the Class of 1963, dedicate our yearbook to you, Mrs. Kruse, with our sincere appreciation for your unceasing concern on our behalf. Your unselfish efforts in class activities and your interest in us both as students and as individuals have proven you a true friend and teacher. We thank you for enriching our lives with your endeavors. 4 Mrs. Kruse was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and attended West Haven and Lyman Hall High Schools. After graduating with a B.S. degree from Central Connecticut State College, she came in 1953 to teach in the Wallingford elementary schools. She received her Master's degree in Education from the University of Hartford. Mrs. Kruse then came to Lyman Hall where she is now teaching chemis-try. Among her many duties and activities, Mrs. Kruse is assistant advisor to the Senior Class. 5 Mrs. Isakson We ore deeply indebted to you, Mrs. Isakson, for your active participation in the efforts of Lyman Hall students. Our association with you has been a rewarding experience. In Appreciation Mr. O’Connor Miss Brown, we thank you for your efforts as both teacher and advisor. We are deeply grateful for your personal interest In all our class projects. Miss Brown To you Mr. O'Connor, we ore deeply appreciative for your efforts to assist us in every way. Your work as a teacher and as a friend has been of invaluable aid to oil who attend Lyman Hall. Though not a teacher, Mrs. Kearns, you have faithfully served both the students and the faculty. We thank you for your willingness to aid our endeavors with every means at your command and for the time and energy you have given us. Mrs. Kearns IN MEMORIAM LILLIAN NANCY REID For she has joined the choir invisible Of those immortal dead who live again In minds made better by their presence,-Live in pulses stirred to generosity. In deeds of daring rectitude, in scorn For miserable aims that end with self. In thoughts sublime that pierce the night like stars. And with their mild persistence urge man's search To vaster issues. George Eliot Teachers and students of Lyman Hall High School were saddened by the tragic death of Lillian Nancy Reid, on December twenty-ninth. Coming to Lyman Hall as a teacher of Biology in nineteen twenty-nine. Miss Reid became Chairman of the Social Studies Department in nineteen forty-three. Upon the opening of the new Lyman Hall in nineteen fifty-eight, she chose to remain at the Robert Earley Junior High School. On all of us fortunate enough to have been her students. Miss Reid has left a lasting imprint. Her spirit lives on in the flame that she kindled in our minds and our hearts. Dear Seniors, Time is undoubtedly the one commodity in life which almost everyone spends recklessly. Yet it is the one thing, more than all others, which should not be cast away on trivalities. As you look ahead in life, you measure time by your own youth. You see ahead a long life — a life which offers you all good things. Through well-formulated plans you have carved your private niches in the future, wherein may lie a career, vast fortunes, fame. I would pose one question: Where in those plans have you allotted time for others? Dr. Albert Schweitzer has what I consider the best formula for time well-spent. He states it thus: I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve. It is my fondest hope that each of you will achieve happiness in life. The most accurate yardstick by which you measure your share of happiness should be the degree of dedication with which you have served your fellow man. Time offers you a challenge which you will have met only when your youth has slipped away, and you can look back with pride on that single effort which you expended for humanity. 8 MR. The blueprints, tentatively formulated, are imprinted on the lens. A bird's eye glimpse of the crowded halls and the neatly arranged seats of learning is developed. Intellectual opportunities await the astute scholar. Extensive formulas, equations, maps, and scripts for education gradually permeate the ready mind. Thus, Future's portrait is drafted and Today's is refinished and Filed away. William Choromanski President. Fellow Students: We have learned much from three years of high school. In these three years we have acquired the abilities to reach our goals in life. Here we have set our patterns for living. Here we have acquired characteristics that will stay with us always. High school is certainly a place for academic learning and study;however, it is more than this. It affords us knowledge far beyond what is taught in the classroom. Through the extra-curricular activities provided at Lyman Hall, we have learned how to get along with people. One of the major objectives of the Student Council is to promote a better understanding between students, faculty, and administration. To be called a good high school student, a person must have many facets. Not only must he be academically proficient, but also he must be ready to take upon himself responsibility. The qualities of leadership, scholarship, character, and service are all important. A good high school student, having attained these qualities is ready to face the future. No map guides us to its hidden treasures. We don a suit of honor, a helmet of courage, and a sword of conviction. Thus armed, we set out on separate paths. Our destinations remain imperceptible. Like stars, our successes seem distinctly bright and almost within reach; yet, they continue to flicker on the dark stage of the horizon, ever changing. It is a dark era, ours to illuminate. f f + ? + v; T . The Graduating Class Class History Class Historians: Sue Collins and Chris McLaughlin. These are the abstracts and brief chronicles of the time. (Hamlet At the moment we entered Lyman Hall in September, 1960, a new clock began to tick. We, as a class, would need to accomplish many things and time was our greotest limitation. Because we were a society and government is necessary for a successful society, we elected officers. Victor Cordova was chosen president and LeRoy Kearns, Roberta Andrews and Gail Backes were vice-president, secretary, and treasurer respectively. Recognizing the fact that a unity was necessary between the three classes at Lyman Hall, we democratically elected Chuck Balassa, Steve Bates, Rusty Brooder, Victor Cordova, Tom Mansfield, LeRoy Kearns, Roberta Andrews, Gail Backes, Betsy Curtis, Sue Collins, Leona Ford and Barbara Sabo to be our class representatives to the Student Council. Aiding us in our acclimation were our class advisors. Miss Chase and Mr. McGahie. Under their helpful direction we organized into committees to fulfill varied class activities. Among these was the ring committee headed by Mary Ellen Butler. As the clock ticked on, sports became increasingly important to many students in our class. Receiving varsity letters were Joe Haffner, Charlie Gerace, Rusty Brooder and George Grosser. To cheer the athletes on, a junior varsity cheering squad was chosen consisting of Barbara Sabo, Carol Crump, Mary Howe, and Sue Collins. The hour of our social debut was approaching as we elected LeRoy Kearns to be General Chairman of the class dance, Harbor Lights. Final exams brought the year to a close. Regretfully, we left the portals of Lyman Hall, one year older and infinitely more aware of the twor challenging years ahead of us. September brought the falling leaves and the return to school. Here we were greeted by a new principal, Mr. John Price. Accustomed to our responsibilities, we elected officers for the new year. For these positions we chose LeRoy Kearns as president, Victor Cordova as vice-president, Leona Ford as secretary and Gail Backes as treasurer. Various committees were chosen from the Representative Council which consisted of a boy and girl from each junior homeroom. These groups decided on our class colors, blue and white, and our motto, The Golden Age is before us, not behind us. Again we elected Student Council Representatives. Returning were Gail Backes, Leona Ford, Barbara Sabo, Victor Cordova, LeRoy Kearns and Tom Mansfield. Newly appointed members included Donna Tremper, Renee Dudois, Barbara Kusak, Richard Treloar, Richard Wachtelhausen, Bill Choromanski and Albert Barbieri. The hour of our cultural debut approached. While general chairman Jane Bemont worked with all play committees, Noelle Johnson, Walter Dembiczak, Bill Choromanski, Barbara Sabo, Frank Pearson, Matt Furman, Tom Mansfield, Sue Holder, and Donna Waycott rehearsed conscientiously for the Junior Class Play, Our Town. November saw the Junior Thespians performing with poise and sensitivity. T28 Time ticked on and soon it was January,- our most important project as Juniors was begun. Moon River was chosen as the theme for our prom. Pat Burns and Gail Marcuss, as co-chairmen, worked hard to organize the event; and our advisors. Miss Brown and Mr. Granucci, aided us immeasurably in making this occasion a success. Thus ended our second year at Lyman Hall. It had been a year of apprenticeship and now we were ready to demonstrate our leadership. Never before have we had so little time in which to do so much. These words of F.D.R. certainly illustrate our feelings as we started our final year at Lyman Hall. To make these last months fruitful, we chose Victor Cordova to lead us. Rusty Brooder was elected vice-president; Leona Ford, secretary; and Donna Tremper, treasurer. Representing us on the Student Council were Tom Mansfield, Bill Choromanski, Chris McLaughlin, Calvin Robinson, LeRoy Kearns, Victor Cordova, Charlie Gerace, Gail Backes, Leona Ford, Sue Collins, Joan Tencza, Donna Tremper, Donna White, and Carol Mascia. To aid us in this, our most important year, we had the advantage of the new language laboratory and educational television, which were used frequently. With the help of our advisor, Mrs. Bohannah, we began work on our Senior Prom, Cantonese Festival. General Chairman Betsy Curtis was ably assisted by committee chairmen Diane Franklin, Noreen Gryga, Mary Cardillo, Patricia Zobrowski, Laurie Jennings, and Leona Ford. On November seventeenth with a crimson dragon enhancing the atmosphere, we held our Cantonese Festival, which was highlighted by the crowning of our Senior Class queen, Leona Ford, attended by Gail Backes and Donna Tremper. Sports occupied much of the boys' time during our Senior year. Although the teams were plagued by injuries, the spirit of the fans was maintained by our senior cheerleaders: Captain Sue Collins, Mary Ellen Butler, Carol Crump, and Linda Geremia. As work on the Signer progressed under the competent leadership of Martha Awdziewicz, we began to realize the nearness of graduation. While the clock ticked away our few remaining months, we looked forward to Class Night and Graduation. Then we would go our separate ways, but would still be united by the words The Golden Age is before us, not behind us. Only a moment; a moment of strength, of romance, of glamour — of youth! ... A flick of sunshine upon a strange shore, the time to remember, the time for a sigh, — and good bye! (Conrad, Youth) THE GRAND MARCH Our Junior Officers: Victor Cordova, Leona Ford and Leroy Kearnes. Dear Classmates, I, of all previous senior class presidents, have the best reason to cherish you, my fellow classmates. My being born to a minority group and having a different racial background did not make one bit of difference to you. You honored me by allowing me to lead the class through the years at Lyman Hall. Although with time exact memories will diminish, your kindness and fellowship will, nevertheless, always remain in my heart and mind. Lyman Hall, its building and its traditions, has a special meaning for our class. A large percentage of us started our junior high years in this building. Because of this we perhaps have felt more at home here than any other class. For this reason, and for the studies and activities we've shared, it will be difficult for us to leave Lyman Hall. Yet, a new life and surroundings await us, a world of freedoms and responsibilities, joys and hardships. We must be aware that with the freedom for which we've been striving will come numerous responsibilities, and that with successes there must be hard work. My best wishes for the future to you, my fellow classmates, and to our beloved Lyman Hall High School.
