N T S HISTORY OF THE CLASS UF 1958 Today, this 22nd day of May seems quite different from that September day back in 1946. It was quite a shock to realize that we would be on our own now, and those who went through the agony, of turning loose their mother's apron strings are these: Stanley Sikes, Phyllis Smith, Wendell Mit- chell, Dartha Rhodes, Roy Money, Roberta Cornett, Tommy Fowler, Glenda Boswell, Hayne Mitch- ell, Betty Lee, Kate Holladay, Don Morgan, Helen Swanner, Peggy Langford, James Sipper, Pris- cilla Mahone, Sara West, Janice Finlay, Mary King, Davis Ganey, Charles Clements, Nelson Knight, and yours Truly. Jimmy Head joined us in the second grade and this was the year that we were shining exam- ples of all schools. Most of us were in the rhythm band, and there's no telling how many sticks we wore out beating together and DOI a tune yet! This was also the year that Jimmy and Wendell began their careers as class romeos. We had no additions to our 3rd grade or 4th grade classes, maybe it was a good thing, though Those who were here nearly drove the teachers crazy! It was in the 4th grade that the old school building burned and we managed to miss a few days of labor. But, in the surrounding schools, the class of '58 carried on and Rutledge was especially jolly. Faye Duncan and Joanne Johnson made the clean-up list and it was a funny thing how they always managed to get with John David and Buzzie, respectively. And was Buzzie a lover? Boy, you should have seen him in that coat-room! Jimmy Kelly and LaRue Williamson joined us in the Sth grade. We were all impressed with La- Rue's braveness when she fell and skinned her knee--she cried and we thought she was going to lose the leg, then when the teacher left, she told us it didn't hurt at all--she just didn't like her ball team at recess. Joyce Richardson and Juanita Penn joined us our year in grammar school. This was really a big year in our lives because this was the year we went to our first formal. Some of the couples at our graduation banquet were these: Betty Jeffcoat, and Nelson, Priscilla Mahone and Jimmy Head, and Glenda Boswell and Stanley Sikes. Our first year in high school started off with a bang as a year of confusion, especially for those who joined us from surrounding schools. We had a number of students to join us during this year and we provided the school with plenty of laughs. At the change of every class, we went to the wrong room and the laughter hit us hard in the face! Soon we learned to laugh back and to get in the right room. Those who joined us and helped make our 7th grade in school a perfect one are: Bonnie Broadway, Faye Duncan, John David Johnson, Joanne Johnson, Buzzie Hargrove, and Billy Jordan, Myra Tidwell came from Chapel Hill, fthe first six listed are from Rutledgej. Lalar Byrd, Gaye Smith, Margaret Johns, and Shirley Messick joined us from Videtteg June and Jeanette Cle- ments from Dry Creek, Lagettie Skies. Curtis Petrey and Lanier Beasley came from Petrey. This year we joined Mickey Smith and Thomas Franklin. These boys knew the class of '58 and liked us so much they just stayed back and waited for us. This year in our eighth grade, Sam Phillips, leader of the Senior Quartet, moved to l..H.S. from Montgomery. This was also the first year that B team cheerleaders were elected and Joanne Johnson, Kate Holladay, and I were elected. This year Joanne Johnson was our candidate for Homecoming attendant.
