Waiting for the counselor on those tacky green chairs and then going into his office only to feel slight- ly claustrophobic. This year all that changed. The guidance office and also the office of the activities director and school nurse were given a face lift. In the guidance area, Mr. Nelson and Mr. Erickson were given longer offices and separate conference and ca- reer references areas were set up. The activities director's of- fice was moved over into the nurse's old exam room and the activities' old office became the nurse's new exam room. New life was also given to the gym floor. According to school officials, the refinishing of the gym floor should last 15 years. The purchase of a $4,000 tarp should add another 5 years of life. 1. The janitors putting on the final touches. 2. The football field in all its glory. 1. Mr. Menage's new office. 2. Every two students have a microphone that they use to talk to the teacher in Fulda for short- hand; in Pipestone for French. LHS's New TV Room • ■jp-' • L, What's it like not having a teacher in the room? Just ask any of the students in short- hand and French, the two telecommunica- tions classes this year. 1 mi — A Time Gone By... The 1987-88 school year started with a bang fof all students involved in school activities. Eligibility meetings were set up for senior high students and junior high students on special nights with speakers brought in to inspire our students and their parents. In August, Mr. Bernie Saggau from the Iowa State High School League talked to 500 people about com- mitment and getting involved. In September. Keith Nord talked to students during the day and to over 700 people at night about goal setting. In addition to these speakers, we held small group discussion for students and parents at both sessions to share ideas. In early October, the Luverne Lions Club brought Karl Randall to Luverne and he talked to students about making choices and being able to say no when necessary. This theme Just Say No was made graphic with every student in grade 6 through 12 receiving a T-shirt with that message printed on it. The shirts were paid for through donations from area churches, businesses, and several organizations plus generous individuals. The activities department at school and the Luverne Area Chemical Awareness Committee co- sponsored the events and felt that the meetings had a positive impact on our students and parents. m m P «3 2.ts+V oiY J'li 1 The homecoming pepfest. 2. We've shared the good and made the bad And to think it all started when we were just lads. But now the time must come to an end. We'll always be near and always be friends. These years have gone by Ike a cat in the box. Remember when we thought that God could be Ox. Our wondedful teachers Are you with me people? and most importantly Are there any comments or questions before we do today's notes? Having a full quota of knowledge was definately the pits. But we were growing older without realizing it. But as the years have flown by. this year's junior class has ma- tured. Six years ago we were a totally different group of people. We are now ready to take on the biggest challenge of our lives thus far The role of seniors. Yes. next year we will be the graduating class of Luverne High School. Scary thought isn't It? We have enjoyed many great times together and we enjoy many more. We are the class that sticks together through thick and thin. No more homeroom, reading and milk breaks, now it's study hall, English, and 4 minutes to get to class. Recess isn't so structured and now we have our very own hall for just hangin' out. No more Elementary School for us, we are in Jr. High now. We can partake in the speedline, go to a school dance, and maybe wobble down to the DQ after a game. The class of '93 is now recognized in school class cheers and a voice in student government. So many new and exciting opportunities await us. Why is it then we get more home- work and have less time to do it? Seventh grade is a time to try different things and discover yourself. Life is picking up which indicates we are growing up. Say goodbye to milk breaks, nap time, and fighting to carry the lunch ticket box. The Class of 1993 looks forward to each new opportunity just waiting to be discovered. But let's never forget seventh grade, a time of change and a year to always be remem- bered. 1. Row 1 Steve Watts, Alicia DeYong, Ericka Tollefson, Alison Bowron; Row 2: Dennis Wilken. Lisa Wessels. Never before in the history of L.H.S. football has a team made it to the state playoffs. Football practices started in early Au- gust with two practices a day for a week. In addition to long and hard practices most players lifted weights to be in shape for competition. This year's team was fortunate to have the experience of 18 seniors, the most seniors out for football in several years. This spirited group of upperclassmen contributed to the team's unity which certainly helped in this successful sea- son! The regular season ended with the Cardinals placing third in the confer- ence. The Cardinals qualified for the section 2 play-offs and with the help of the spirited fans, the Cardinals won the section 2 championship. Then the team moved into the state play-offs. The Cardinals defeated Orono 21-20 in their first state playoff game. After de- feating Orono, the Cardinals had to face Lakeville, a team from a school twice the size of Luverne's school. Un- fortunately the cards lost to Lakeville, but not without giving the opposing team a good struggle! It was a memo- rable year for these seniors. The Bran- don Valley Invitational and the Sherburn Invitational. Eight teams competed for the trophy at Sherburn, St. James, Pipestone, Lake Crystal and Luverne. The Cardinals stuck together and came out as the winning, team edging out Blue Earth 115.6 to 114.3 The gymnasts have been working hard all year for hopes of competing at the state meet. Dream, believe and achieve was the motto for the 87-88 team. The gymnasts went into the region meet looking strong, and came out with third place in the team totals. The dream of competing at the state meet came alive for Heather Iverson, who placed third on floor with a 7.85. If one member or your team makes a mistake, it won't affect the other's score. A lot of people don't realize just how hard the wrestlers work out. practice, and stay in shape. Just stand in the halls after school during wrestling season and you'll see Coach Lundgren. Amborn. or Swanson make them run by yelling. Peo- ple also don't realize how strict their diet is. If they don't weigh a certain amount, they won't wrestle. To maintain weight they run. spit, starve, and chow down on vitamins. Judge Timothy K. Connell A Look Back To the students of LHS ... Well, another yearbook Is done (Thank God!). It took a lot of effort from a lot of people to produce a book that people can look in a say, Thats me! The entire staff worked very hard, but some people stand out. Julie Laabs the jr. editor gave a lot of extra time, as did Jennifer Hatting, Matt Gropey Gropel, Michelle Sam Sam- mons. Brad “Bolly Bollinger. A special thanks to the Star Herald and to Chad Fey for their assistance. The theme of this book has been time. As I look back on the school year, I think of the experiences we've shared as stu- dents of LHS. We've had happy times and sad. But hopefully we are enriched by having shared them together best wishes. Todd Leech Sr. editor 127 LITTLE BUFF a tribute by Pamela Kessler His tiny little stature, his teddy bear eyes. That one and only smile- He spoke very little, but said alot He walked with us mile by mile. Comical remarks were so softly spoken. People thought him shy. But once one was near to him It was easy to see inside. Now all we have are memories Of a simple face in this senior crowd. But just to say we knew or were friends with him. We'd have to be very proud. Tears will be shed and things will be written Words will be said enough. But always we'll hold a place in our heart For the one we knew as Little Buff.
