They are people in grades seven through twelve who are interested in Home Economics. They are concerned with reaching out and helping people. FHA week this year was February 9-15. There goal was “A Choice With a Future.” They participated in Action Activity Events which was held at Slayton High School and also Little International and Home Economics Exposition, which was located at South Dakota State University. 1. S A D D “If we can dream it, it can be done.” That is the motto of SADD: Student Against Driving Drunk. This year a SADD chapter was initiated at LHS under the guidance of Mrs. Graphenteen and Mr. Erickson. SADD was founded by Robert Anastas, a former teacher and coach. He established the organizations four main goals: To help eliminate drunk driving and save lives, to alert High School students to the dangers of drinking and driving, to organize community alcohol awareness pro- grams, and to provide for peer counseling. To prevent teens from drinking and driving, SADD initiated the “Contract for Life.” This paper simply says that the student will call for sober transportation and the parent will agree to pick up the student and discuss the incident in the morning. The parents also agree not to drink and drive. e SADD metting in progress a d '°_sate' ' aV oxxft 3 Music Reflects The Beauty Of Life 36 1. When looking at the reflection of the past year, we can see progress directing the path. The involvement of each individual and group resulted in a concert choir that was dedicated and hard working. The work paid off when the choir participated in the Southwest Choral Festival. The hard work also paid off for each individual who competed in solo and ensemble festival and ad- vanced to the state regional level. Other activities the choir was involved in were the Christmas concert. Pops concert and a music festival in Decorah, Iowa in April. 38 Voices Of America 4 The Choir Council: Row One: Anne Tofteland. The marching band practiced many long and hard hours this past fall. The members were up at school many mornings by 7:00 a.m. They placed second at the Tri-State Band Festival which was held September 29. The band also performed at every home football game and at Vermillion and Brookings. At the end of their marching season, they held an indoor marching concert along with the Junior High Band. They consist of both eighth and ninth grade music enthusiasts. They are under the direction of Mr. Les Mahaffay. Being the best band of the Tri-State Band Festival is not any easy job. Being the first band down the street can be tough, but especially in freezing temperatures and snow flurries as was the case in 1985. The band also competed in competitions in Madison, South Dakota. They also presented an indoor marching show in October and a winter and spring concert band performance. They have been working very hard and looking forward to future years as Senior High Band members. 1. The head of it all, Mr. Mahaffay 2. They lost two heartbreak- ers to Jackson by three and two points but did beat Marshall in an exciting one point victory. Leading the cards were four senior players: Katie Connell Missy Bollinger. This year’s boy’s varsity team did their best to keep the tradition alive. With most of their players back from last year, the guys had exper- ience as their biggest asset. The team started off the season with four consecutive wins before losing a couple of very close games to O’Gorman and Brandon Valley of South Dakota. But the conference games are what really count. The emphasis is on basic funde- mentals that can be applied when they reach the varsity level. For some it is a new experience competing against other towns, but they enjoy the challenge and usually perform very well. Although it is work, they also take time out to indulge in the main purpose of sports, fun. 67 1. Team Captains- Barb and Kelly. Grace, balance, and poise describes this years gymnastics team. Despite their bad luck they had a good year. They suffered from sicknesses and sixteen injuries. Coach said they would have achieved more goals if they had not encoutencountered such terrible misfor- tunes. This years team showed a great improvement over the season. Their highest score this year was a 108, just behind last years with a 109. Even though they did not top last years score, they improved as the season went on. They all had goals they wanted to achieve but they all experienced dissappointment because they did not achieve their main goal which was to win a meet. But individually they all had goals they did achieve. Gymnastics is an individual sport. They all have to have their own goals and they need to have the will to achieve those goals. Also they have their own preference to which division they like the best and perform the best at. But they need the encouragement from others to keep them going. They are setting higher goals and have high hopes and expecta- tions for a strong Varsity team next year. They have a quite young team. B-squad won two meets this season which will help Varsity next year. But over all, the 85-86 team did “Pretty Well”, says Coach Bosshart. Cardinal Row One: Kelly Knutson. Lori DeJongh. Pride, honor, dedication, and hardwork are a few words that can describe the team that reached plateaus. The grapplers started off the year with a big win against the Ellsworth Panthers. Following a little more than a week later was the Flandreau tourney, where the matmen took first place away from Clear Lake, a state ranked South Dakota team. Luverne had 10 wrestlers advance into the final round. The Cardinals also had some crushing moments, including close losses to Slayton and Worthington. Senior Brad Petersen had to bring his season to a screeching halt because of an elbow injury. Coach Lund- gren says, “that much of the success of the team was due to the dedication and leadership of the 4 seniors. Eric Eisner, wrestling at 132. had a fine season. He is nearing 40 career wins. At 112, Dave Duffy is shooting for his 60th. career win at Regions. Dan Serie, 185, has surpassed his 60th win, and has broken numerous career and season records. Serie was undefeated in regular season and district action. Another big moment for the grapplers came at their own Cardinal Tourney, when the guys came within 3 points of knocking off the state ranked Adrian Dragons. Luverne hosted the District 8 wrestling tournament on February 15. Six of our wrestlers advanced to region 2A action at Blue Earth. They include Greg Hoogeveen at 98, Daryl Meyer at 105, Dave Duffy at 112, Jason Kremin at 119, Dan Serie at 185, and Dave Gibson at Heavyweight. In anticipation of the Homecoming football game against Jackson, homecoming week began with the crowning of this year’s King and Queen. Bart Thielbar and Kris Gangestad had the honors of watching over the weeks activities as they were crowned Monday evening. Spirit was high in the hearts of many as the weeks activities got underway. The Cardinal volleyball team defeated Windom Tuesday evening. Other activities also included the 3rd Annual Powder Puff football game between the juniors and seniors. The seniors defeated the juniors with a score of 9 to 6. The junior guys were also defeated by the senior guys in the tug-of-war during half time. The weeks activities concluded Friday evening with the Cardinals losing to the Jackson Blue Jays and a Homecoming dance after the game. 1. While living in Luverne she is a part of the John Theis family. Being a student at Luverne High School has been a very new experience for me. It has been alot of fun to meet new people and participate in new school activities. At LHS I am involved in the school choir, children’s theatre and I’m interested in cheerleading. I have not participated in any of these activities before because in Australia we do not have school activities like there is here. It’s really been fun to be a senior at LHS. In Australia I have only completed half of year eleven, so I have a year and a half of school left when I get home. I expect the most exciting part of the year to be the prom and graduation because we don’t have either at home. 1 Rhonda and her host family, the Theis’s. 2. Rhonda and her main sidekick. Scott. 3. Are we but a drop soon to be forgotten in time? It seems we have reached the top of a world that hasn't been an easy climb. Finally we are on our own and entering the “real” world. Are we going to drown now that no is no longer a word? The sun shines on us and we seem to sing, the world will meet our every dream. Here is important knowledge we should bring —We must reach out and catch our sunbeam. Through the course we formed many bridges, interlacing, bonding us together. With three seniors returning to this year’s boys’ tennis team, the Cards had more ex- perience at the net than they have had in recent years. However, with the majority of the team comprised of underclassmen, it was difficult for the team to come away from matches with many victories.
