1974 CAPPING AND GRADUATICN i
Capping and graduation are two of the
greatest expectations we hope to achieve.
The adrenalin ran high as each benefi-
ciary imagined herself in the role of the
perfect nurse. On March 15, 1974, at
Concordia Senior College, the over-
whelming feeling of becoming a real
nurse was exhibited by the Class of 1976.
The finale of our long awaited goal was
obtained on june 7, 1974, in Holy Cross
Lutheran Church as the Class of 1974
graduated. As capping is a preface to an-
other milestone in our lives as nurses,
that of registration. As we left these
"hallowed halls" with the same feelings of
fear, joy, and conquest we experienced
before capping and graduation, the reas-
surance that we had surmounted these
ambitions, encouraged us to believe we
might accomplish the next one.

The Student Body-an organiza-

who alone accomplish Very little
but together somehow manage to
form several committees that plan
and organize projects throughout the
school year. Somehow S.N. manages
to work a meeting in between a pa-

nesday night date. Whether the com-
mittee had a party or project it was
good!

Of the twelve organizations at
LI-ISN, nine are committees for the
student body. The chairwomen of
the Library, by - Laws, judiciary,
Recreation, Social, Financial, Nom-
inating, and Appendix are representa
tive on Student Council. NCP, an
organization to promote Christian
Fellowship, is the largest. The Chap
el Committee, newly formed a year
ago, had done wonders for chapel
services. Each year the freshman
class forms a choir to sing for
groups and chapel services and also
practices for capping and graduation
ceremonies.

Webster defines a student as
one who learnsg a learner. In this
case, a student nurse has many dif-
ferent areas to increase his know-
ledge. Not only in the nursing field
but also in maturity, science, and
mechanical skills. Progressing from
bathing a patient, to knowing medi-
cations, and finally preparing for
the ever frightening State Boards.

have something in common - they are the
various aspects of the classes freshman
took at CSC. The twice-weekly mass exo-
dus by car to CSC during fall quarter took
the freshmen to psychology, microbiology
and anatomy and physiology. Winter
quarter the ASP and chemistry, and reli-
gion. Classes at CSC gave the freshmen
a view of college life and classes that
helped them grow, not only intellectually,
but also in their understanding of people
outside their school and dorm.
W'hile most of the class is up and about for break, Bev seems to be content to just sit still.

Webster defines fundamental as a
primary or essential principle, a basis
or foundation. To the freshman student,
Fundamentals in Nursing meant learning
the primary and essential principles of
nursing. lt meant learning that Funda-
mentals was the foundation of nursing.
After learning the basics of nursing, the
freshmen moved to the Fundies lab to
apply the newly learned principle to act-
ual manual skills, such as bed making.
Upon completion, they began clinical ex
perience-on-the-floor training. Here the
students worked with patients instead of
oranges or mannequins. Following clini
cal, the nursing students engaged in con
ferences to evaluate their mistakes and
achievements.

Seeing a procedure that had been only
discussed before gave the students insight
and understanding. Mrs. Filchak kept an
eye on her girls but they were left on their
own to assist with actual surgeries.
Scrubbing, circulating and follow, plus a
care plan made them more aware of the
human anatomy and disease processes.
After surgery, Cathy Booth helps transfer the patient

Mrs. Ellsworth, there were many learn-

and living as a diabetic for two days were
highlights of the rotation. Care plans, lab
tests, and learning that teaching is a vital
part of nursing were areas that were
stressed and studied.

After being hit with arrhythmias,
EKG's, drugs and their side effects the
first Week, juniors were fairly discour-
aged. Seeing patients with conditions
discussed in class, then Watching them
improve, certainly made a difference in
the following Weeks. Who could forget
those by-pass surgeries? By the end of the
eight Weeks, cardio suddenly seemed alot
less frightening.

Working on MU along with Mrs.
Baker, proved to be helpful in learning
about Orthopedics and neurology. Physical
and occupational therapy were new areas
to us at the beginning but by the end of the
rotation, they were a big part of this
field of nursing. Sore backs and legs from
poor body mechanics weren't very un-
common. After a couple of weeks, tugging

Working in the nursery was alot like babysitting for
juniors and seniors alike,
OB-GYN were combined this year and
Mrs. Schneider, Reiff, and Roth taught
the rotation. Working different areas and
shifts was new to juniors and seniors a-
like. Besides the floor work, students
taught prenatal classes and had projects
to complete. Working with parents and in-
fants, students utilized teaching aides and
new nursing skills to function effectively
in this area of nursing. Tiring at times,
OB was also fulfilling.

Working with children put hutterflies
in seniors' stomachs at first. A new
modc of explanation and observation had
to he utilized. There were two added per-
sons besides the patients in this type of
nursing-parents. Often they were as
frightened as their child. Care plans and
a party were also a part of this rotation.
Visiting Head Start and a nursery school
were two programs to be observed out-
side of the hospital. Mrs. Gauldin taught
this rotation.

Deb manages a moments rest while making rounds with
Dr. Mcliachern on NE-4.
With Mrs. Thomas as instructor,
team leading gave seniors a different and
full schedule to follow. A wing of treat-
ments andfor meds gave them few leisure
ly moments, several panicky ones, and
many new learning experiences. Rounds
with doctors, team conferences to lead,
routine tasks, and making sure all was
done on time is team leading. Co-Charge
gave rise to endless phone calls, making
assignments and transcribing orders.
The real importance of team leading was
learned.

ER, ICU, regular floor work and
disaster nursing were all a part of Ad-
vanced Med-Surg. Instructors were Mrs.
Ehrman, Miss Fincher, and Miss Huyck.
Working with Dr. Vogel and all the per-
sonnel of ER gave them an idea of what
real emergency treatment entails. Of
course, ICU was a new area too. They
were able to work with modern machine-
ry, see a critically ill patient make it,
and increase nursing skills. Floor work
gave the student an opportunity for review
before ending school. They also had to
plan for a disaster in Disaster Nursing.

Seniors practiced in the day-room before taking on any patients for a game,
Mrs. Fritz, the senior psych instruct-
or, was constantly coming up with new and
various ideas for this class. Working at
the State school and the health center were
two unforgettable experiences. A dif-
ferent angle of nursing was learned. In-
stead of changing dressings or passing
meds, students were talking and listen-
ing to patients as treatment measures.
Understanding the reason behind one's be-
havior could be used in nursing or in
anything at anytime.

This has been due to several factors

Can anyone really imagine what the
life of an instructor is like? An instructor
must constantly be on the QQQO. She must
always keep furthering her knowledge of
new techniques in order to provide her
students with the best possible instruc-
tion. There are always the long hours of
preparation for the day's lecture for testi,
not to mention the sometimes continual
running from floor to floor checking on
and supervising her students. How can
this instructor still be smiling and giving
her students moral support when she her-
self has surely had a hectic morning?
Certainly the morning break spent relax-
ing with her fellow instructors and friends
is a very welcome and much needed break.
Is it a wonder that they still have time to
be a homemaker and enjoy a social life
also?

The seniors hegan their last year
with a countdown calender posted on room

senioritis grew more. The class motto,
"We enter to learn, we go forward to
serve", seemed to he coming true. Mon-
ey making projects were candle and pop-
corn sales and a hake-sale to help in pay-
ment of class pins. Class song and flow-
er were "You'll Never Walk Alone" and a
yellow rose, respectively. The class
colors were yellow and moss green.
There were forty girls in the Class of
'74, Main topics throughout the year
were projects due for the rotations and
the dreaded state hoards in spring. Par-
ties were very important, too. They
ranged from the coke and pretzel party to
pizza countdown parties. Class sponsor
was julie Schneider.

FIRST YEAR: THE START OF
SUMETHINC BIG
There's never a dull moment for the
freshmen with fun Fundies and Pharm? But
if things got too tiresome, the junior and
senior classes always pitched in to give
them something to think about. The class
of '76 sponsored a bake-sale and sold
stationary. They enjoyed a class Christ-
mas party and also hosted the annual
Halloween party, which was a howling
success. Their class motto was: "What
do we live for if it is not to make life
less difficult for others. " Being pa-
triotic, the freshmen agreed on class
colors of red, white, and blueg which
marked a star-spangled bouquet of roses
white baby's breath, and blue ribbonsl
Their class song was "l Believe. "

we liegan our first year everyone
appeared excited. Suddenly we were sur-
rounded hy the people who would he shar-
ing all the trials, trihulations, and joys
ol' the next three years.
llours were mixed with studying and
spur-of-the-moment parties. The high-
light ol' that year was receiving that white
cap which we had worked so hard for. An-
ticipating the first hlack stripe and the pre
senting oi' the Plogsterth, A. N. O. N. , and
Ehrman awards came at the end of the
year.
Concentrating on meds and broaden-
ing of nursing skills came next. The Night
ingale Award and two stripes were given
at the closing of the Iunior year.
During the last year we attempted to
polish the finished product. Days until
graduation, pins, and diplomas were on
our mind.
. . we leave to serve.
During the Open House, manv of the rotations demon-
strated the different techniques learned.

Life in the dorm has changed

a minimum of hattle sears and some
pleasant memories. Those monthly

parties, continuous studying, upper-
classman raids, and the lack of
sleep come to mind. This often

DOR PERSONNEL RUN SCHOOL
Many of us, although we'Ve heen here
for years haven't taken time to familiarize
ourselves with the personnel of the dorm.
Mrs. Givens and Mrs. Zollinger spent
most of their time on new admissions,
figuring tuition and ordering supplies for
school and students. Miss Yohe and Mrs.
Len? kept the dorm in working order
making sure everything and everyone
stayed in line. Mrs. Koons and Miss
Bushe helped students with research
material and the receptionists kept us
in touch with the "outside. " They took our
calls and tried to find us when that im-
portant "person" dropped hy. The house-
keeping staff managed somehow to keep
the dorm presentable. These seemingly
unnoticed people such as the registrar,
secretary, resident director and her
assistant, the lihrarians, the reception-
ists, and the housekeeping department
are necessary in order to effeciently run
this school.

Going over medications was one of Miss I-Iensler's ways
to increase drug knowledge of students.
Making this her thirteenth year as in-
structor at LHSN, Dorotha Hensler has
been chosen as this year's dedication of
the APPENDIX. The memories of her stu-
dents during those nine weeks of GU-GYN
included the fast paced mornings and long
afternoons, the gentle persuasion to do
one more catheter in what seemed to be
an all ready overloaded morning, the trip
to the VD clinic, slow mornings in the
renal unit, and her always correct answer
"force fluids"
She has also been a familiar face a-
round the yearbook as she has been advisor
for the past few years.
This year she was instructor in Fun-
damentals of Nursing. We are all sure
she will help to get the new class started
off on the right foot in their nursing
career.
We say "thank you" to the instructor,
the advisor, the friend of -----

THE NPREDICTABILITY OF DOR
LIFE
Ilappy and sad, bored and busy, funny
and scared all describe dorm life. Every-
one can remember a time in which she
has experienced these feelings whether
she has been here one year or three. One
of the unique characteristics of all dorm
life is the explosive temperament of its
occupants. As Mrs. Gauldin said,
"without rebellion there is no advance-
ment toward adulthood"' Some ofthe re-
sulting actions of these "explosions" this
year included - a door coming off the
hinges, the front entrance decorated a-la
underwear, and a color T.Y. turning
into black and white within seconds. All
in all, dorm life left alot of memories
for everyone concerned.
Don't be so anxious, Dan.

FALL BROUGHT TWO MAJOR PARTIE
AT L.H.S.N.
Seniors first! Line-up for food was quick to form.
junior maids sit one out at the Halloween party.
4
During the first week of the Freshman
year, the junior class sponsored the Big
Sis-Little Sis party. The new class was
introduced to the student hody and allowed
to View up-coming experiences in their
nursing life through skits performed hy
upperclassmen. Of course, the free
meal was a hig drawing card. Toward the
end of the evening, the new class was he-
coming more acquainted with the other
two classes.
In October, the Freshman class
sponsored their first party, the traditional
Halloween party. Everyone that attended
agreed that this year's party was very
entertaining and hinfilled. Even the
instructors got into the act, especially
Mrs. Chasarl These fall parties gave the
students and instructors a break from the
busy back-to-school activities.
Left: During a skit, Juniors explain clinical to u.,-
knowing Frosh as preparation for first clinical day.
Luther became the new sex symbol at the party.
