Miss Martha Warstler, R.N., B.S., M.S.
Miss Warstler has also been on the School
of Nursing staff for one year. She holds the
position of Co-ordinator of Medical-Surgical
Nursing. All three classes spend many hours
in the integrated study of medicine and sur-
gery. Miss Warstler plans the course of study
for the various classes in an effort to com-
bine the two in the most advantageous man-
ner for learning and comprehension in the
classroom, ancl actual observation and prac-
tice in the clinical area. The well-planned
courses have provided the students with the
ideal learning situation.
E
Miss Virginia Williamson, R.N., B.S., M.S.
Miss Williamson is the Educational Direc-
tor of the School of Nursing. She has been
a member of the school staff for one year,
and she is well qualified for her position.
She is instrumental in planning the important
educational program for each class and co-
ordinates the associated activities. We, the
students, are grateful to Miss Williamson for
her devoted efforts to provide on optimum
curriculum, in which we may gain the best
and fullest nursing education.

futheran Convalescent Home
The h o s pi ta l 's Convalescent
Home on the Covington Road was
abandoned and the patients trans-
ferred to other facilities owned by
the hospital at 2925 Fairfield Ave-
nue. The long-care unit became an
integral part of the hospital opera-
tion. lt enjoys the full advantages of
all the hospi1al's service depart-
ments.
Admission to the unit will be by
the same process under which all
other types of patients are admitted
to the hospital, that is, by reserva-
tion made through the family phy-
sician. All of the patients formerly
cared for in the old convalescent
home are now being accommodated
in the new facility.

Students
Upon entering nurses training, a
new way of life and living in a new
environment was encountered, and
this experience required much ad-
iustment. It provided a challenge for
us, but as we advanced, we grew
in stature and maturity, As the years
passed the close association of class-
mates entering training ripened into
lasting and true friendships. Al-
though our ways must eventually
part, the fond memories and many
friendships we've made will never be
forgotten.

". . . And not only so, but we glory in tribulations
also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience, And
patience, experience, and experience, hope: And hope
maketh not ashamed, because the love of God is shed
abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given
unto us. For when we were yet without strength, in due
time Christ died for the ungodly."
Romans 5:3-6
As Christ experienced in our behalf, we must have
faith in Him and work to gain our rewards. The ex-

them as best we can to show'our love for the One
who did all for us.

EXPERIENCE TEACHES . . . lt is not enough to have
books or to know where to read up for information
when we want it. Practical wisdom for the purposes
of life must be carried about with us and be ready for
use at call. It is not enough that we have a fund laid
up at home, but not a farthing in our pocket, we must
carry about with us a store of the current coin of
knowledge ready for exchange on all occasions, else
we are helpless when the opportunity for action oc-
curs. The experience gathered from books is of the
nature of learning, the experience gained from actual
life is of the nature of wisdom, and a small store of
the latter is worth vastly more than any stock of the
former.
This is the 1962 Appendix-a resume of experiences
of living, of nursing, of dedication to a cause.

Science Classes
Anatomy and Physiology, Chem-
istry, and Microbiology are taught
the freshmen year through affiliation
with Valparaiso University. These
courses give the student a basic un-
derstanding ol the normal sciences
so she will be able to cope with ab-
normal situations when they are en-
countered.
An intricate part of the Anatomy course
is the use of visual aids and models
when studying and reviewing.
Laboratory partners are able to identify
disease causing organisms of an un-
known nature by studying slides under
the microscope.
Experiments in the Chemistry laboratory
enable the student to have a clearer
conception of both normal and abnormal
reactions occurring in the body.

Accuracy is of great importance in pre-
paring medications. Skill of handling a
hypodermic for injection may be prac-
ticed in the clinical laboratory.
The correct technique of taking a blood
pressure may be practiced in spare time.
One of the first procedures a student
is taught and one of the most used
in nursing is the art of making a bed.
Nursing Arts
Fundamental principles of nurs-
ing care and procedures are
learned by the freshmen student in
the clinical classroom and labora-
tory. Practice and close supervision
of procedures give the student guid-

Senior Sxperience
Thirteen weeks of the senior year
are spent in senior experience in
which the more highly skilled tech-
niques are learned. The course con-
sists of three basic divisions: inten-

Operating Room Experience
Eight weeks of the iunior year are spent
in the operating room. Basic surgical assis-

1 Pediatric Nursing
Thirteen weeks of the senior year
are spent studying the growth and
development of the normal child in
comparison to the pathological con-
ditions of infancy and childhood.
Lectures, proiects, films, and field
trips are provided to stimulate the
interest of the student in caring for
the child.
The playroom provides the student with an im-

convalescing children good diversional activity.
2.
The experience gained in the nursery is
invaluable in caring for the newborn.
The student becomes a teacher when
working with the mother and the infant.
Reassurance and constant observation
are most essential to the mother who is
in labor.
Ofistetrics
Three months of the senior year are spent
in the area of maternity nursing. In this field
ot nursing lies one ot the greatest opportuni-
ties for the student in patient education. She
teaches the new mother the fundamentals
of pre- and post-natal care and the care of
the infant. One month of experience is pro-
vided in each ot these areas: labor and deli-

Dedication
Mrs. ane Badgley
With gratitude and admiration, we the graduating class dedi-
cate our yearbook to Mrs. Jane Badgley. Though our faith and
strength were often tested, she was there to offer encourage-
ment. Day after day our faltering footsteps have been guided
by her. In later years may we be as willing to share and give
insight from our experience as she did. As advisor, instructor,
and friend she exemplifies the role of a professional nurse.

Personnel
Long hours of labor are spent by those who supply
us with the benefits of an enriched and varied educa-
tion. Their experience and guidance broadens and
enlightens our developing skill and knowledge. To the
faculty, administration, and personnel, we extend our
deepest appreciation for all their endeavors which
contributed to our training as professional nurses.
