R. Ernest Dear
The student body of Luther L. Wright High School deeply regrets the death on December 22, 1965, of Mr. R. Ernest Dear, our superintendent of city schools for the past twelve years.
Forty-three years in the field of education in this geographical area had brought Mr. Dear into close contact with the community as a whole. He served as principal of our high school from 1932 to 1953. These years of public service were marked by a cheerful outlook, patient understanding and a constant desire to give us the best possible
opportunities that our educational system could offer.
Mr. Dear was a dedicated leader, devoted friend, and public servant who has left on student body and community an indelible example of human achievement.Table of Contents

We, the editors of the 1966 Hematite, have attempted to depict memories representative of the pleasant years that the members of this class have shared at Luther L. Wright. Pictured within are the scholastic and extracurricular activities which have shaped our lives and which will guide our futures.
The spark of knowledge and interest which has been kindled by our teachers will continue to grow and reflect in our lives just as the Hematite theme progresses from a candle to the laser light with the expectation of more startling discoveries in the use of illumination. The future, man's most valuable possession, belongs to our class. The light shall not dim but will increase in brilliance through our lifetime.
It is our hope that Hematite 1966 will serve as an enjoyable reminder of days past in the eager pursuit of happiness and in the spirit of goodwill that have marked the brief passage of our high school years.

His Message
The true worth of men is not in what they seem but in what they are. How much better it is todoeachday some little good rather than to dream of great deeds in time’s future. No king with power untold can surpass your acts of kindness or your words of truth.VIRGINIA AUKEE

Mr. Lugviel gets a tardy slip.ORGANIZATIONSThe National Honor Society
Embodying the highest ideals of scholarship, service, leadership, and character, the National Honor Society represents the peak of honor bestowed upon students of the Luther L. Wright High School. The anticipation of membership serves as an incentive to strive for superior grades and to achieve the ideals of the National Honor Society.
Initiation ceremonies are always impressive. The ideals of the club are explained and the symbol of the organization is displayed. The colors of the society are blue and gold. The symbol is composed of keystone and flaming torch.
Not more than fifteen percent of the senior class and five percent of the junior class may be chosen as members in any one year. Membership is announced at the honors assembly held each spring.
The Luther L. Wright High School chapter is under the direction of Mr. Lugviel.

Student Council
The Student Council's executive board, composed of 12 members, two elected representatives from each class plus the president of each class, is under the guidance of Mr. Kettula. The Council's activities include the planning of assemblies, the sponsorship of dances, purchasing of records for dances, and the sponsoring of the traditional Homecoming event. Because the Student Council is a governing body by the students, it serves as an effective link between them and the faculty. Problems concerning the students can be clarified by bringing them before the Council. Through discussion answers can be found.
60Debate
"Resolved that the Federal Government should adopt a program of compulsory arbitration in labor-management disputes in basic industries" was the proposition with which this year's debate team was confronted. It was another successful year for our competent debaters under the guidance of Mr. Lugviel. Debate tournaments in which the team competed include the Seaway Classic at Superior, Wisconsin: the Duluth Den-feld Tourney at Duluth, Minnesota; two preliminary Upper Peninsula meets at Negaunee and Iron Mountain and the debate finals at Northern Michigan University, Marquette, Michigan.

King Ed and Queen Jenny reigned as modern-day Lancelot and Guinivere. ’66 Senior Class Play Committee
Ten Little Indians
In order to achieve the utmost function of the theatre, which is to please, to entertain, to stimulate the audience's interest, and to make the audiences' evening worthwhile, the Senior Class presented Ten Little Indians by Agatha Christie. The play was a fantastic, suspenseful mystery, which centered around ten little Indian statuettes placed on a mantel piece. Embossed on the base of each statuette was a rhyme telling how the Indian met his death. One night, while a party was in full swing at the house, each statuette toppled from the mantel and broke. As each statuette broke, a guest choked to death from poison in his drink. In the end, only one Indian and one guest escaped untimely death.

Homecoming
Queen Myra and King Tom
The 1965 Ironwood homecoming, held October 16„ was a complete success! With the enthusiastic support of the fans, the Red Devils played an outstanding game in defeating Menominee 33-7.
Preceding the game, the traditional parade of floats through the main street of Ironwood displayed the imagination and hard work of the student body.
King Tom Niksich and Queen Myra Colasacco were crowned before the game, and reigned over the dance which followed. The gayly decorated gym provided a pleasant atmosphere for the ending of a perfect evening.

Varsity Coach’s Statement
From "Bottom to Top” is the phrase that best describes the Ironwood Red Devil Football Team of 1965. From a lack-luster record of 3-5 in 1964 to a resounding 8-0 in 1965 is a record of which the class of '66 can be very proud. No team worked harder, practiced harder, played harder, trained better, or had more fun than this team. It was a great thrill for me to be associated with this team. Red Devil fans will always remember the 1965 football team as the team of "hustle and spirit."
