f tag, fl is 461-im!-.nl-F .nw-af Probably the greatest single contribution made by the Class of '51 was in the field of athle- tics. Most of the boys in the class participated in sports one or more years and several of our athletes became outstanding in one or more sports. The '49-'50 year was the most significant, with three long-to-be-remembered victories. The big upset victory for Ludlow's football team over the favored Ashland Tomcats by a 26-19 score found jack Aynes, Howard Nutter, Harry Denham, Tom Divine, and joe Meyer helping to bring about its accomplishment. When Ludlow defeated Holmes for the Thirty-fifth District Basketball Championship, six of the first ten players were juniors: jack Aynes, Howard Nutter, lake Beil, Bob Brown, Bill Clary, and Bob Freking. In baseball, lack Aynes, with Bob Freking behind the bat, pitched a no-hitter against Lloyd High School. The score was 18-1. During the senior year our same group of athletes, with the addition of Ed Heringhaus, continued to represent Ludlow High School on the various athletic teams. These boys were in large part responsible for two outstanding accomplishments in sports during '50-'51. Howard Nutter was leading scorer in Northern Kentucky during foot- ball season with 85 points, representing 13 touchdowns and 7 points after touchdown. Also, L.H.S., with a starting team of seniors, scored the greatest number of points ever scored in a basketball game in Northern Kentucky by defeating Florence with 107 points. The Class of'51, with its motto of Forward Ever, Backward Never , hopes that each mem- ber will find a happiness and a success even greater than he enjoyed during his high school career. Bon Voyage! CLASS HISTORY In September of the year 1947 a crew of forty f1ve set sa1l on the Good Shmp L H S to begm a four year voyage Wlth Howard Nutter and lack Aynes at the helm and with the kxnd help and encouragement of Mlss Nolte and Mr Haddxx, our sponsors, and all of our other teachers, were off to a good start The greater part of the voyage was calm s1nce we spent most of our tzme wlth our lessons However, some of us Jolned varlous clubs 1n the school and partxclpated ln thelr act1v1t1es The mam soclal event of the year was the Freshman Skatlng Party Before the fxrst. voyage ended, the weather became a llttle stormy, what wlth the d1ff1cult1es encountered ln trylng to fxnd all those unknown x s 1n algebra and to explaln the mysterxes of electrlclty ln sclence Fallure and wlthdrawal were the results Therefore, the crew on the second voyage was reduced somewhat but to compensate for the loss of some of the orlglnal crew, several new members came aboard They were Bob Brown lack Doran Ilm Stewart, Iuanlta Wllson, and Tom D1v1ne Howard Nutter and lack Aynes were 1n the p1lot house agam th1s tr1p Mrs Roades and Mr Padgett, our sponsors, helped us to have smooth saxlmg through a sea of World Hxstory, Latm, and Hamlet Many of us engaged 1n club act1v1t1es and 1n sports, and all of us enjoyed the Sophomore P1cn1c, the outstandlng soclal event of the year Wlth our long voyage Just half over, several students found the waters a l1ttle too rough to struggle agamst Only twenty two boys and twelve gxrls made up the crew, whlch was captamed durmg tlns thlrd voyage by Howard Nutter Under the guldance of Mlss Thatcher and Mr K1nca1d, class sponsors, we entered upon a serxes of prof1table undertak1ngs wh1ch enabled .Tuamta Wilson, the sh1p s purser to store away some money ln our treasury Sales at football and basketball games, qu1te successful, the Iumor Carmval, fun as well as work the sale of fru1t cakes, none too successful the Jumor play, Three To Get Marrxed one of the best dramatlc performances ever seen at Ludlow, the Jumor m0v1e en1oyed by all the Iumor Sen1or Basketball Games for boys and glrls 1n both of whlch the Junxors showed super1or1ty all of these aCt1Vlt18S made our thlrd voyage a very pleasant and successful one September 1950 found only twenty mne of us ready to board the Good Sh1p L H S for the last t1me The storm tossed waters of geometry, Amer1can H1story, and Enghsh had proved too much for f1ve of the crew, but the rest of us, wlth lack Aynes at the p1lot s wheel, eagerly pre Mr Sch1ck our sponsors, assxsted us ln carrymg out the many respons1b1l1t1es and act1v1ties that also make up the l1fe of semors The great salesmanshxp of some members was dlsplayed at the concess1on stand durmg football and basketball seasons, m the enormously prof1table magazme campaxgn, and 1n the Chr1stmas card proyect The outstand1ng dramatlc talent of our class was agam exhxblted on the L H S stage 1n the productlon Desperate Ambrose The sen1or mov1e Mr Belvedere Goes To College, entertamed a large crowd of students Many class meetings were held to take care of selectmg rmgs, ordermg mvltatlons and cards, bemg measured for caps and gowns, arrangmg for sen1or plctures, electmg the annual staff, select mg the Prom Kmg and Queen, and choosmg the destlnatlon for the semor tr1p Unfortunately, we had to 'change sponsors 1n the mlddle of the stream but fortunately, when Mr Sch1ck was forced to leave,a very w1ll1ng and able Mr Dale Dlcken assumed the co sponsorsh1p of our class and contmued the work of dlrectmg the annual staff ln the publxcatlon of the 1951 Memories As th1s IS wrxtten we are lookmg forward w1th antlcxpation to the Iumor Sen1or Basketball Games 1n March, the Iunlor Sen1or Prom 1n Apr1l, Sneak Day 1n May, and Commence ment 1n Iune After that Iacksonvllle Beach! Yes the long voyage toward the Goal of Graduatxon IS almost ended As we approach 1ts completlon, we l1ke to recall the many contrlbutzons made by our class of 51 to the lxfe of L H S Many assembly programs were presented entlrely or 1n part by students from thxs year s class The cheerleader squad had two glrls from our class, Grace Cox and Iuamta W1lson, captam th1s year Two glrls from the class of 51 strutted thexr stuff as majorettes Sharon Kordenbrock and Io Ann Hxghhouse, captam for the last two years Several class mem bers partlclpated ln the band durmg the freshman and sohpomore years, and of them Lorralne Walte and John Penny have become outstandlng musxczans Many members of thrs year s class have done flne work on the staff of the Quarterback throughout thexr school years, and Nancy Combs clxmaxed her Journalxstxc career by being edltor durmg her semor year Any project at the school requ1r1ng the help of an artlst found Tom D1v1ne and Grace Cox of the class of '51 ready to do the work The accompllshments of the Planmng Board, lnstltuted durmg our flnal year, were brought about under the leadershlp of lack Aynes, sen1or U , - . . 1 . .' . . . .
