DEDICATION Mr. James Cavallo 22 23 The class of 69 has voted to dedicate its yearbook to Mr. James Cavallo for his confidence and respect in us and we in him. Mr. Cavallo has always been interested in our class outside of what is expected of him as a class advisor. Willing to become personally involved in the students and their activities both in and out of school, there are few students who do not know him. Mr. Cavallo enjoys teaching tremendously and feels it is never monotonous, simply because no two students are ever the same. In the classroom his enthusiastic manner of teaching acts as an incentive to learn and makes his class easier than others may be. It is because he enjoys us so much that we, in turn, are able to enjoy him. John J. Hurley, Principal ASSISTANT PRIN CIRATESS MESSAGE The of 1969 at a time when opportunities to serve mankind are many and varied, but the pitfalls are also many and varied. We can remember the Freshman Dance, the Sophomore Banquet, the Junior Dance, the Proms, the Senior Show, the Senior Banquet, and of course Graduation. We also will remember with thanks the dedicated faculty and administration and all those others who did so much to help us. Most of all we will remember each other and the good times we had together. Perhaps this was the best part of our high school years. I would like to wish you all “Good Luck” in whatever you may do, and would like to thank you for letting me serve you as class president. Richard Katz President, Class of 1969 Michael Kuchyt Theresa Lentowski Treasurer Secretary 70 AWARDS AND HONORS As in past years, members of the class have brought recognition to both themselves and Ludlow High School through their efforts and achievements. The pride which has led them to success is characteristic of the class as a whole and symbolizes the ambition of our generation. William Dynok was selected by a student vote to represent Ludlow High School at Good Government Day in Boston. The purpose of the program is to acquaint Massachusetts students with the workings of their state legislature and to spur an interest in it. Four senior boys represented Ludlow High School at the Model Congress held at American International College in Springfield Massachusetts. They were; William Dynok, Joseph Hawrylciw, James LaPlant, and Richard Katz. Advisor for the group was Mr. Leonard Charest. Selection was based on knowledge of and interest in current affairs and social studies. The boys submitted a bill to appropriate money to take our troops out of Vietnam. William Dynok From the right — William Dynok, Joseph Hawrylciw, James LaPlant, Richard Katz, and advisor Mr. Leonard Charest. 71 Three students Joseph Hawrylciw, Craig Abrahamson, and Richard Katz, were selected to be placed among those students in Merit’s “Who’s Who in American High Schools”. Joseph and Craig received letters of Commendation on the National Merit Examination, and Richard was named a semi-finalist. 72 Teresa Lentowski was chosen by a student and faculty vote to be awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution GOOD CITIZEN Award for demonstrating leadership, dependability and patriotism throughout her entire course of studies. Later in her senior year Teresa was selected by the faculty to represent Ludlow High School at the Springfield Civitan Club banquet honoring outstanding high school seniors. The award was based on _ faithful application to _ studies, participation in school activities, and high standing of moral integrity. Anne-Marie Czub was selected by the faculty in her junior year to represent Ludlow High School at the annual Governor's Day held at the Eastern States Exposition Grounds. Her personality and academic achievement were the basis of her selection. Anne-Marie was part of Connecticut Governor Dempsey’s group. Diane Sorcinelli was the Ludlow High School winner of the annual Betty Crocker Homemaker Test given to high school seniors across the nation. Diane is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to go into the nursing field. ) Richard Dickinson, Richard Katz, and Joseph Hawrylciw were selected to represent Ludlow H igh School on the WWLP As Schools Match Wits Panel for the 1968-1969 academic year. Richard Katz was also a member of the panel in his junior year. 73 1969 CLASS HISTORY The class of 1969 entered high school as freshmen in September of 1965 eager to prove themselves to the student body. After establishing a firm footing in the strange new academic atmosphere they put effort into their one social event of the year, the freshman dance. The class was well represented in other aspects of high school life; members joined both extracurricular organizations and _ sports teams. Officers for the first year were Jay Sandman, president; Donald Alves; vice president; Doreen Teixeira, treasurer; and Aurelio Thomas, secretary. With newly-gained confidence at having completed their first year, the class entered sophomore year with an even greater enthusiasm. Class Officers were William Dynok, president; Thomas Teixeira, vice president; Jeanne Bergeron, treasurer; and Cheryl Amos, secretary. In January, under general chairman Sonia Santini, and chairmen Bryan Abrahamson, Joy Hebert, Joanne Sadowski, and Gary Dominque, the sophomore banquet, Hawaiian Night, was held. An obvious spirit of togetherness began with the entrance of the class into the second half of its high school career. Elected leaders for the junior year were Richard Katz, president; Louis Curto, vice president; Michael Kuchyt, treasurer; and Katherine Szabla, secretary. The class put tremendous effort into the junior dance, Flower Power, and under general chairman Cynthia Campora and decorations chairman Mary Fillion, the result was the most successful junior dance to date in Ludlow High School history. In the spring, members of the class joined together in the bank parking lot to participate in a car wash to add funds to the class treasury. By this time a great sense of pride in the achievements of many members of the class, both outstanding athletes represented on the varsity teams and outstanding scholars representing the class in the National Honor Society, gave the necessary incentive to succeed in presenting the only formal event in Ludlow High School, the junior promenade. Given the name, Oriental Paradise, the gala evening was very successfully arranged by general chairman Teresa Lentowski, and chairman Mary Fillion, decorations; Linda Rivers, invitations and favors; Joanne Sadowski, tickets; Cynthia Campora, refreshments; Gerald O'Neil, publicity; William Dynok, entertainment; and Walter Martowski, clean-up. The class of 69 reached the height of its togetherness in its final year in Ludlow High School. Members of the senior executive board were Richard Katz, class president; Susan Kowalski, vice president; Michael Kuchyt, treasurer; Teresa Lentowski, secretary; and homeroom representatives Craig Abrahamson, William Dynok, Sheila Hewett, Louise Latour, Gerald O'Neil, David Ouellette, Monica Cormier, Debra Thompson, and Diane Sorcinelli. Though two dances during the year, the Booster Day Dance in the fall under general chairman Joan Barker, and the spring dance, A Young Man’s Fancy, under general chairman Fred Heptinstall, served as uniting forces for the class, it was the annual Senior Show held in February which truly showed the closeness of the class entitled, Together. The final days of the class of 1969 were hurried and, at times, even frenzied; but who could ever forget the Junior Prom, Class Day, Senior Banquet and of course, most importantly, Graduation! 74 CLASS POEM DEEP WATERS Wading through deep waters I was but a drop, then a stream, suddenly a river — rushing to the ocean. Eagerly, apprehensively reaching towards dreams and aspirations I have run rampant and drifted peacefully through these years. Every bend brought new ideas, many flowing still within my mind tossing from bank to bank, sifting the good from the bad floating or sinking into oblivion. Realizing faults, striving to correct them Aided by those that would aid trying to understand why I had to turn to others why it couldn't be fathomed all by myself. Someday — I don’t know when — I'll reach my destination, hopefully, then I might understand all that has happened to me, and why. The Booster Day weekend, which featured key soccer and grid contests was highlighted by this senior rally and dance. The Booster Day rally began at 6:30 p.m. and the main feature was the death of a true-to-life member of one of the opposing teams in a blazing bon-fire. Following the rally, a dance, lasting until 11:30 was held in the gym, the music being provided for by the Prognosis Negative. As well as having the traditional fall decorations such as cornstalks and brightly colored leaves, the focal point of the entire dance was “The Great Pumpkin”: a seven foot pumpkin made entirely of tissue paper. SOCCER Ludlow’s 10-3-1 record on the soccer field this year was poor by past standards, 1969 being the first year in which Ludlow was not champion in the Pioneer Valley Soccer League during its ten year existence. Ludlow’s three regular season losses consisted of a defeat to perennially excellent Chicopee in the seasons first game by a 2 to 1 score, a loss to West Springfield, 2 to 1, and a disgraceful defeat at the hands of Longmeadow, 2 to I. Calheno, Tom Teieira, and Jack Vilaca. The Lion’s worst game was the terrible loss to Longmeadow, with Tom Teixeira scoring our only goal. The tie game was with East Longmeadow and Rick Andre provided our only goal. The Ludlow VS Minnechaug game provided a few anxious moments for Ludlow fans. Trailing 2 to 0 with six minutes to play, the Lions bounded back to win 3 to 2 in regulation time. Ludlow was again well represented on _ the Led by the high scoring center forward, Tom Teixeira, the Lions rallied toward the end of the season and booted their way into the state finals. After relatively easy victories over Smith Academy and Granby, the Lions defeated Chicopee Comprehensive by a 4 to 2 score with Tom Teixeira scoring all four goals. Jack Vilaca scored the only goal in the Ludlow VS Classical game as the Lions won the Western Massachusetts Title again. Ludlow lost the State Championship game to Needham High School, 2 to 1, under skies at Brandeis University. Mario Pereira scored the only Ludlow goal. The best game of the season, according to Coach Yando, was Ludlow’s 5 to 2 revenge victory over Chicopee. In that game, Mike Bertini put in two goals with one each for Jimmy overcast 80 Pioneer Valley All-Star Team and All-Western Mass. Soccer Team. The first team of the Pioneer Valley All-Stars consisted of seniors Jack Vilaca and Tom Teixeira and junior Jimmy Calheno. Jack Vilaca and Jimmy Calheno were named to the first team of the All-Western Mass. Soccer Team. On the second team was Tom Teixeira, honorable mentions went to Mike Bertini and Mario Pereira. Future underclass prospects, in Coach Yando’s estimation, are junior Jimmy Calheno and sophomores Mario Pereira, Dennis Duarte, and Chuck Belisle. Ludlow’s Junior Varsity soccer team, under the able direction of Coach Larry Colburn, compiled an impressive 12-0 record, indicating that Ludlow may have an excellent varsity team in the future. sehotbes We ise eprint i B ngfiel st Longmeadow ow Ea Ch Opponent meadow icopee Com chaug i icopee adow — icopee Comp . ae haug . + inne West Spr innec ast Longmeado Longme Monson Ch Long Ch M Coach Yando and Tony Goncalves Jack Vilaca Tom Teixeira John Bissaillon y Kurty Jimm Rick Andre Dave Ouellette Mike Bertini Riera Se A : ee ts AN = Jack Vilaca rips a shot into the net as the Classical goalie watches PE 28k, AA Tom Teixeira on the move The agony of defeat Carrying off the second place trophy after losing the State Championship to Needham at Brandeis University . and downs 85 Ludlow spectators are always enthusiastic ie ee Lalo) ei ual Tom looks like he’s doing a Portuguese jig but the enemy never felt like dancing when Little Mario made the plays as well as the big Teixeira was on the field boys Anyone who has ever seen a soccer game knows that the thrills come one after another 86 Jimmy Calheno heads the ball Ludlow’s players will remember Coach Yando’s pep talk during the State Championship game Carol Peacey cheers the fans on Ludlow’s soccer team Top row — Lou Teixeira, Dave Ouellette, Jimmy Kurty, Jimmy Calheno, Chuck Belisle. This year’s crowning took place in the auditorum in front of the entire student body since there was no Hi-Y show this year. The elven girls, nominated by various clubs and organizations, were voted upon by the entire school on the basis of popularity, beauty, and school spirit. Miss Victory reigns over the traditional Palmer VS Ludlow Thanksgiving Day game and represents the students of Ludlow High. Miss Victory 1968, Sheila Rooney, a member of the junior class, was crowned by Joy Hebert, last years Miss Victory. Her court consisted of two seniors and a sophomore. Compiling a respectable but disappointing record of 5 wins and 4 losses, our team could have been one of Ludlow’s winningest . but injuries took a heavy toll. At different times throughout the season some six starters were missing from their positions. The traditional Ludlow-Minnechaug rivalry this year spurred Ludlow to an exciting 26 to 25 comeback victory with Jim Tetrault scoring the winning touchdown in the last thirty seconds of play. Victories followed against East Longmeadow and Longmeadow. The Lions perfect 3-0 record was then spoiled by powerful South Hadley, in a disastrous 20 to 2 defeat. Lost for the season as a result of injuries sustained in the South Hadley game were starting quarterback Joe Boduch and defensive star Paul Bousquet. Preceding his injury Boduch had connected for eight touchdown passes in three games. Still disheartened over the previous week’s defeat, Ludlow suffered a disappointing defeat in the mud and rain at Holyoke Catholic’s MacKenzie Stadium. Ludlow bounced back to outclass Commerce 20 to 6, but the next week saw the Lions lose a ball-buster to Enfield in a closely contested battle that could have gone our way. After an overwhelming defeat by Classical came Ludlow’s sweetest and most decisive victory of the season against Palmer in the traditional Thanksgiving Day encounter. In 1967 Palmer refused to play the rained out Thanksgiving Day game, thereby forcing a forfeit loss on Ludlow. As a result, this year’s 42 to 12 thrashing of Palmer was particularly enjoyable. A number of school records were set in this game. The 42 points scored was the highest single game total and the largest margin of victory in recent years. Nine different players, more than in any other game, contributed to the lopsided score. This was surely a gratifying end for the departing seniors, football careers. Standouts for the season included seniors Norm Linton and Bryan Abrahamson. Norm Linton was voted All Suburban League and All Western Mass. for his excellent play at both offensive and defensive tackle. Bryan Abrahamson set a school record with eight pass interceptions and was voted All Western Mass. defensive half-back. 90 FOOTBALL “Minnechaug East Longmeadow A _ Longmeadow South Hadley Holyoke Catholic | Ludlow 2 Commerce: | « Ludlow, 670. Despite our many problems we all ner to work and overcome these obstacles in time for opening night February 14. It all started in December, when at a meeting of the senior class Fred Maskill and Mary Fillion were chosen Co-chairman of the show. For the seventh consecutive year Mr. William Mullins was the faculty chairman and this See was assisted by Mr. James Cavallo, Mr. Bernard Burns, and Mr. Gregory Wrinn. With the help of Mr. Wrinn the members of the theme committee named this year’s show ““Together” and arranged to open up the show with the song. sie. The closing song was “Somewhere” taken from the musical “West Side Story”. As in past years, the seniors decided to present a dress rehearsal for the Golden Agers and nuns from various churches in the area. Unfortunately a large snowstorm a few days before prevented them from coming. The snowstorm was also a blessing as this years snow sculpture committee did not have anything to worry about. The committee easily completed their portrayal of Snoopy the “fighter pilot dog” from the cartoon strip Peanuts. The show finally arrived and the acts were ably introduced by Steve Piligian and Barbara Wehner, Master and Mistress of ceremonies respectively. The team didn’t win many games, but it did win the respect of the rest of the league for its determined play. One of the most interesting games was the first meeting with Chicopee on jenuaty 20. In the first period Paras scored twice but the Lions didn’t give up. ate in the second period Rick Bissaillon scored on assists from Ron Prokop and Jay Costa to close the gap. Then, in the third period, Duane Mac Dougall tied the game. Ludlow pressed the rest of the way, and almost won. Another exciting game was the 4-4 tie with Cathedral. Ludlow pulled ahead 3-1 on goals by Tom Teixeira (2) and Neil Paquette. Cathedral came back to tie and then go ahead in the third period 4-3. The Lions didn’t give up, and with less than 30 seconds left Neil Paquette scored his second goal as he tipped in a shot by Tom Teixeira to pull another tie. Ludlow’s first victory of the season in league play against West Springfield by a 4-2 score was a most interesting contest. West Side scored first and Jay Costa tallied to end the first period 1-1. In the second period West Side scored again. Another comeback by Ludlow did the job. Half-way thru the third period Roger Beauregard scored to tie the game. Then, Jay Costa scored his second goal of the game to give Ludlow the lead. West Side pressed hard, but their efforts weren’t good enough. Rick Bissaillon scored into an open net to close the door on West Springfield and put Ludlow into the victory column. Comebacks were the order of the season for Ludlow. Even in defeat, this trademark labelled the Lions as a tough aun to contend with. On January 29, Pittsfield made its first visit to the Coliseum and Ludlow was listed as the opposition. Pittsfield pulled into a 3-0 lead in the first period and it looked like the game might be over already. The Lions didn’t think that way and in the second period Ludlow stormed back, and Roger Beauregard, Neil Paquette, and Walter Martowski scored to tie the game. Pittsfield’s all-stars Neil Eddy and Gene Fitzgerald scored in the third period for a 5-3 victory, but the Berkshire team had to work for this win. Ludlow didn’t win the game, but they won the admiration of the fans for their game effort. The final game of the season against Cathedral proved to be another seat squirmer. Cathedral pulled ahead 4-1 after the first period, but the second period was a dandy. Tom Teixeira, playing one of his best games of the season, tallied twice and Arthur Gauthier once along with another Cathedral score to set the third period with Ludlow down by one goal 5—4. With defense a forgotten word, Ludlow’s Neil Paquette scored his second goal and Ron Prokop his first as Cathedral scored three more times for an 8-6 Ludlow loss. This game set the season’s record for the most goals (14) scored by two teams in one game. Back row, are Art Gauthier, Mark Mountinho, Roger Beauregard, Bob Robar. Bottom row, Frank Curto, Duane Mac Dougall, Neil Paquette, Provost, Bill Dynok, Paul Giza. Middle row are coach Richard Malek, Tom Teixeira, John Jorge, Walt Martowski, and Mike’ Brennen. John Bissaillon, Ron Prokop, Jay Costa, Rick Bissaillon and Robert There were several bright spots to highlight the season and aa the losing record a little easier to take. First, the four goals scored by Tom Teixeira cap- ed a 4 year scoring career total of 44 goals to set a school record. Goalie John Bissaillon completed a 3 year varsity career which included a school record of 4 shut-out victories in a row. Sophomores Neil Paquette and Nore Jorge started every game on defense and did an outstanding job. The Junior Varsity team, organized for the first time, had a 5-4 record. Arthur Gauthier did a fine job on de- fense even though he had never played the position before. Robert Robar, second goalie, in his first varsity start, helped the team defeat Westfield 2-1. Top scorer for the season was Tom Teixeira with 4 goals and 10 assists for 14 points. Neil Paquette tallied 6 goals and Walter Martowski 5 to rate high in the scoring. The outlook for next season looks bright and the team should improve on its record. The Junior Varsity team will provide several potentially good play- ers including goalies Bob McChesney and Mike Murty; defensemen Bob Howe, Mike Yelinek and Keith Martin; and forwards Marshall Robar, Mark Mon- tinho, Doug Bowman, and Richard Langlais. Six varsity members will be returning for duty including defensemen Neil Paquette, John Jorge and Bob Provost. The entire second line of Ron Prokop, Jay Costa, and Rick Bissaillon will be returning also. This aggregation should bring Ludlow High School movy- ing back into contention. for combat ready The puckmen pile — onto the ice ing pep talk. gave an Inspr Mr. Malek always 105 hi Is this the Ludlow bench or the penalty box? 106 ? after the puck or each other Are they 107 VO LORTAG OINT Os The junior class presented its first dance on October 6, 1968. Entitled “Utopia” the central theme of the dance was a dream world created by the decorations committee under the direction of general chairman, Mairi Angelo Dellecese and chairman of decorations Christine Sadjak. The major point of interest was a columned gazebo constructed in the center of the gymnasium. Other decorations included trees covered with veils of angel hair, which added to the creation of the world suggested by the title of the dance. Entertainment for the dance, which lasted from 7:00 until 11:00, was provided by the Prognosis Negative. Proceeds from the dance, as well as future car washes, will be used to help defray the cost of the junior prom, given each year by the juniors for the seniors. 108 109 | Technical : Holy Catholic _ Longmeadow he Easthampton Agawam: . The inexperience of the team was reflected in its inconsistent record. Though the Lions eel a winless season there were several games when they out- played their opponents during one half only to fall down in the other half. Against Tech, Ludlow played an excellent first half, holding Tech to a 25-25 tie. In the second half of the Commerce game, Ludlow outscored the Western Mass. Champs. The Lions improved throughout the season and showed a great deal of hustle and desire. Their inexperience hurt, however. This year’s team had only two seniors who lasted the whole season. Craig Abra- hamson, our high-strung, extremely competitive forward, provided Ludlow fans with many Serene aes to cheer during this dismal season. Ron Varg, our 6’4” big man, improved fantastically this year and did an excellent job at center. Providing the spark plug for the team this year was little Jimmy (The Flea) Tet- reault. Jimmy was one of the Lions’ workhorses and will be remembered as the little guy who always brought the ball down cour t after one of the opponents many baskets. He scored an average of 6.8 points a game. John Zilch was our most frequent shot-maker. Averaging 7.3 points a game, he always seemed to be taking a shot. Bob Gilrein, Alan Wadas, and Jimmy Calheno were Other key play makers on the squad. The team’s general inconsistency, inexperience, poor defense, and weakness on the backboards doomed the Lions to defeat after defeat. However, most of the boys still have another year or two ahead of them on the varsity squad and they should im- prove considerably with more experience. Several games and events will stand out in the minds of Ludlow fans as they look back upon the 1968-1969 season. The closest game of the season was a heart- breaking 58-56 loss to Easthampton. Enfield scored 98 against Ludlow in the second contest between the two. The first time, they scored only 96. Lud- low’s highest score was 62 points against East Longmeadow, Against Agawan and Commerce, Ludlow managed only 32 points. Jimmy Cal- heno had the distinction of scoring the most points in a game for Ludlow with 22. Craig Abrahamson was second with 21. Coach Connery was visibly embarrassed over his team’s first winless season in years. However, “Buzz” is nevertheless look- ing towards next year and prospect of having the first really big center in many years, Mike Morecavage. Tete The cheerleaders never failed to ‘‘keep the faith.” The Lions tried hard but were always a little bit short. 112 Ludlow often won the jump balls, especially with 6’2’” Ron Varg. After an impressive first half of the season, the girls slumped toward the end, after losing an important game to their not-so-friendly rival, Ware. The aggressive offense of Monica Cormier and Pat Sullivan led Ludlow to several of its victories. The fantastic outside shooting of Sue Marceau completed the fearsome threesome. On defense, Joan Barker, Roxanne Savoie, and our center Margaret Robertson did the job. While rebounding was one of the Lioness’ weaknesses, these girls still managed to get the ball down to the offense enough so they could win half their games. After compiling their respectable record, our girls may find more spectators at their games. Maybe girls basketball will be the sport that restores the glory that once was Ludlow’s. Written by Luigi Pirandello, it is the story of a madman who goes back in time and creates a new identity: that of Henry IV, King of Germany. As his illusion is stripped away he is provoked to a final and violent madness. The title role was played by John Burton, a junior and a veteran member of Theatre Arts. Seniors in the cast included Brian Houghton as Belcredi; Don Alves as an intellectual psychologist; Paul Adamski as Di Nolli; Jay Sandman, Carmin Moutinho, and Rodney Jack as councellors; and Bryan Abrahamson as a valet. To be successful in any sport it is necessary to have many senior players on a team. They provide the team with the correct winning attitude. Since there were only three seniors on this years varsity team it showed a definite lack of experience and consistency. The three seniors were: right fielder and captain, Dave Oulette; and pitchers Art Gauthier and Bryan Abrahamson. Over the season the Lion’s defeated South Hadley, Easthampton, and Agawam twice, and Palmer once. Playing a tough independent schedule the team lost two to Classical, one of the best hitting teams in Western Massachusetts and one to State Champions Springfield Technical. Against Tech the Lion’s enj oyed a 5-2 lead until the late innings, before Tech broke the game open. Throughout the season the team was unable to put things together. When the pitching was strong there was no hitting and vice versa. Against Longmeadow sophomore John Jorge pitched effectively but the team was unable to score, bowing 2-0. The Lion’s lost to East Longmeadow 2-1 and 3-1 showing fairly good pitching and no hitting. The Lion’s ended the season with a 2-0 shut out win over Agawam, pitched by Art Gauthier, recipient of the Charles Makuch award. The team’s final record in the Valley Wheel was 7-9, good enough for a tie for fourth place, and 7-12 overall. 122 as es oe She aay A ik oe pe a ms Py ee TRH tod a a ane oe . a ay ae x - Sil a - de my Pe aii Ae ome “iO . sai BR Nat cs OM ee ee: - . There was a distinct shortage of seniors on the team this year, but Larry Bellucci and Alan Ericksburg, the Lions’ superstars, made up for that fact by eras the team to all of its victories. Other seniors on the team included John Bissaillon, Doug Carroline, Russ Houghton, Carmen Mountinho, Jerry O'Neil, and Jeff Pobieglo. This was the best team in Ludlow High’s history but the loss of a couple of heart-breakers and Walter Martowski’s inability to play during the first half of the season ended their hopes to win the league as well as the Western Mass. Team Championship. All of the team’s starters were capable of breaking 80. In fact, the whole team qualified for the Western Mass. Individual Tournament, but since only three men per team were allowed to compete, junior Paul Kawecki and seniors Paul Giza and Marty Martowski were chosen. Craig Abrahamson and Mike Rodio improved incredibly over the winter and Danny Orlik, only a sophomore, continued his fine play. Richard Dickinson was a major disappointment this year. Not only did he fail to improve from last year, he got worse. Excellent future prospects included Mark Fryderyk, Paul Mondrey, and Ronnie Prokop. Paul Giza made the teams only eagle during the first match of the season. His season's total of 16 birdies was second to Paul Kawecki’s fantastic total of 24. Giza will also be remembered for his part in the South Hadley match when he shoved his opponent into the water on Ludlow’s sixteenth hole. Paul Kawecki was the team’s most consistent golfer, breaking 80 in eight of thirteen matches. Marty was the least consistent golfer, scoring 90 one day and 73 the next. Paul Kawecki often scored below 80. Craig Abrahamson whacks it off the tee. 129 JUNIOR PROMENADE °69 Doreen Teixeira and Tony Salvador Enchantment did reign supreme this year on May 16, the date of the annual junior promenade. Patricia Martowski, general chairman of the event, worked with other committees to build their own Camelot. Other chairman included: Kim McChesney, theme and decorations; June Fernandes, tickets; James Bubien, entertainment; Judith Burek, refreshments; Cheryl Christina, publicity; Pamela Smith, programs, favors, and invitations; and Harold Suttles, clean-up. The prom was held in May rather than in the month of June as many junior classmen previously have held their Proms. This was a move to help alleviate the stuffiness which fills the gymnasium on warm June nights. Decorations included a large castle constructed in the center of the gym, make artificial flowers, and scenes from the fascinating world of Camelot. Debra Heptinstall was crowned queen by James Tetrault, chairman of the Grand March. Other members of the court were: Susan Kowalski, first runner-up; Ruth Ducharme, second runner-up: and Maureen Dolan, third runner-up. 130 Debbie Heptinstall reigns over “Camelot” The Queen and her court The promenade and crowning of the Queen was the climax of the evening and drew everyones attention. W 133 CLASS DAY The Senior Class made its first appearance in the traditional caps and gowns on June 9th at the 12 o'clock Class Day ceremonies. Speakers at Class Day were Richard Katz, the address of welcome; Anne Marie Czub, the invocation, Principal John J. Hurley, presentation of the class; Superintendent of schools Hugh O. MacFarlane, Class Day Address; Richard Dickinson Class Day oration, and Kathleen Lysik, Class Poem. The Alma Mater was led by Dorothy Chrzan and the officers of the class planted the class tree. SENIOR ASSEMBLY Reading the Class Ballot No award, just “Thanks” The Senior Assembly was held on June 11, the morning of graduation. During this, the final assembly of the Class of ’69, Mr. John Hurley first presented the scholarship awards and then introduced Mr. William Lavin, a aent to the 69 Lion. After defining the meaning of the term “yearbook” Mr. Lavin introduced editor-in-chief, Louise Latour, who formally dedicated the yearbook to Mr. James Cavallo. Members of the Lion staff then read the class history and ballot. Before the class closed the assembly with the Alma Mater, Richard Katz presented the class gift of typewriters to the school. Kathleen Lysik Class Poet GRADUATION Finally on June 11 graduation arrived and with it came fond memories of our past four years. For some it was the end of twelve difficult years of academic hurdles, for others it was the beginning of their education in an even more difficult level. To all it was the end of the beginning — and the beginning of our adult lives, regardless of what direction we went. The ceremonies began at 8 o'clock with the procession of seniors to the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” played by the Ludlow band. The class of 1969, however, being the largest graduated from Ludlow High with 251 graduates, was seated for the first time in the auditorium seats rather than the stage. The Reverend Helen MacRobert Galaska gave the invocation and the chorale sang two of the three selections they did that evening. The valedictory address was then given by Joanne Sadowski followed by the presentation of awards by Principal John J. Hurley. Superintendent of schools Hugh O. MacFarlane then presented the class. Diplomas were awarded by Francis L. Chenaille, Chairman of the School Committee. Richard Katz, president of the class, was awarded his diploma by his father, Dr. Reuben Katz, and gave the President's message to the class. The Benediction was given by Reverend Francis W. Scanlon.
