5. , 4 aw 4 1 1 -4 1 Foreword We, the 1952 Annual Staff of the Lucannus, don't want to fence you in, but do want you to come with us out under the stars where you can enjoy the feature attractions faithfully portrayed at Lucas High Dude Ranch. Senior Class Poem of 1952 As we bring to a close our Senior Year We leave many fond memories here. Through twelve years of combined work and fun We are proud of the things we have done. Here Endeth, Here Beginneth , the motto of our class Is a motto to remember in years that are to pass. For as our school days end and our future begins Each and every one of us has a goal to win. With experience we've gained, while here at Lucas High With an eye to the future and with a will to try We will win our place in the world for sure And make our school as proud of us, as we are proud of her. Maxine Finnell EW! fm 3 L al Wa- Dedication The Senior Class of 1952 takes pleasure in dedicating this Annual to Mr. Willis Barger, the Superintendent of Lucas Village School. Now I know where I heard that voice before-it was that of one of my fellow classmates, Bob Snyder. At seeing him again I remembered how. well this position suited him, because while we were still in school, he usually made all the announce- ments to crowds of people in order for them to hear. As I struggled to find a seat who should I bump into but Jim McGugin. I stopped to chat with him and I learned that he now owned a ranch in Texas and was doing very well raising mostly cattle. He entered two of his young steers into a contest which was to follow later on in the rodeo. My, what's going on in the main arena ? Why, it's two acrobatic clowns teasing a huge Brahma bull! Bob is announcing their names now-do tell, it's Tom Baughman and Ronnie Schrack QI might have knownfl As I opened my program what did I see but an advertisement of the book, How To Stand on Your Head and Spit Nickels by Bill Harvey. It seems that he has become a well known ma- gician in his field. It says here in small print that the picture was drawn by Marlene Finnell who is now a comimercial artist. Well, here's something interesting, there's to be a rope act by Naomi Crawford and Bob Goff right after the main event. Hm - m - m, I see she's still trying to get Mr. Right in some way or another. Say, that little fellow there with the ten gallon hat looks like someone I know. Why, of course it's Joe Fanello. I attracted his attention and after talking to him for a few minutes discovered that he just bought a dude ranch. The rodeo is over now and I have a long trip home so I'd better go back to my hotel and pick up my luggage before catching my train to Chicago. When I got to the hotel who should I see but millionaire Bob Switzer and his fiancee Kay Kohler. This is probably the nearest Kay will ever get to owning a bank of her own. I started to leave the hotel and suddenly noticed Bert Nichols. He was disguised as a cowboy and after talking to him, I found that he had been with the State Police of New York for three years and was on a case at the present time. I found a taxicab and when I got in it, who should turn around and ask me where I would like to go but Jean McCready. This fascinated me but Jean told me that she was just pinch-hitting for a friend of hers and that she was really only a housewife. Jean then took me to the train station and just as I was about to board the train I.heard someone call to me. I turned to see who it was and there stood Rose Little and Joetta Zody. I asked them if they were getting on the same train as I was and they said no but that they were going on to see their husbands who were stationed at the same Army camp. I wished them both lot's of luck and then got on the train. My next stop was at Chicago, Illinois. I had a two hour lay over before catching my plane so I went to a restaurant to eat lunch. Just as I sat down Mary Ruth Chamberlin came to take my order. She told me that Martha Kurtz owned the restaurant and was doing very well in her business. I told her to congratulate her for me and I was on my way. I took a plane from here and just as I got seated comfortably, I noticed a stewardess coming through the plane. Irnmediately I recognized her as Lavata Williams. She certainly looked neat in her uniform. I glanced around they plane and saw that right across from me sat Maxine Finnell Barr and Bud Barr. They told me that they were just returning from their honeyrnoon out West. It was a matter of hours before Iwas home again. At the airport I met Janet Russell. She told me she was on her way to Fort Wayne, Indiana where she will teach Home Economics in a school there. It had been a long day and I was just about to start for Lucas when I heard the sound of a fire alarm at the main building. All of a sudden I realized someone was shaking me and it was mother telling me that the alarm clock was ringing and it was time to go to school. As I climbed out of bed, I realized that this had all been a dream and I wondered if someday the Class of '52 would ever fulfil my dream as they ventured out into the world. P at Thomps on Class Will We, the Senior Class of Lucas High School, city of Lucas, county of Richland, commonwealth of the state of Ohio, being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish, and declare, this our last will and testament, in the manner and form as follows: I We, as Seniors, leave the following to the remaining classes: To the Juniors, we leave our sincere wishes that you have a wonderful Senior year and trip. Also we leave you the highest honor you could receive, that of having Mrs. Farry as your advisor and friend and the Senior room as your own. To the Sophomores, we leave our ability to sponsor successful dances and our sly way of cutting classes without getting caught. To the Freshmen, we leave you with the thought of the wonderful and more privileged years ahead of you and sincerely wish that you all become Seniors. To our teachers who have been our best friends during our four wonderful years of high school we bequeath as follow: To Mr. Barger, the class would like to say a hearty thanks for believing and trusting in us in whatever we did during our most important years. To Mrs. Farry, we leave memories of our years together especially our Senior year. We want her to know she will never be forgotten but will always be our wonderful Senior advisor. To Miss Titschinger, we leave the puzzle of just why our experiments never worked and hope that next years Senior chemistry students have more stars on their clean-up list. To Mrs. Bissinger, we leave a bottle of soothing throat lotion because of the fact that she had to yell so much at us in Study Hall. To Mrs. Baer, we leave all unsold greeting cards and vanilla and hope she has as much fun in Future Home Economics classes as we have had. To Miss Boka, we leave our sincerest congratulations and a fervent wish for a long and happy life. To Mr. Hetrick, we leave all of the delicious cooking odors that tempted him so much and return all the stolen wood from farm shop. To Mr. Strohmenger, the Senior Class leaves our hearty thanks for granting us our most cherished wish, that of having Pomp and Circumstance played at our Commencement Exercises. To Mr. Hauck we leave the future basketball champions and the eligibility list that never seems to contain too many Senior names. To Mr. Vail, we leave all torn window blinds and broken seats in the Senior room. To Mrs. Berry, our secretary, we leave all unpaid telephone bills and a new box of pencils in place of those she used writing so many Senior tardy slips. To the cooks, we leave the missing silverware and all second bottles of milk that were never paid for. We bequeath to the individuals of the Junior Class as follows: Ronald Schrack bequeaths his quiet, low voice to Carolyn Berger, in hopes that she makes good use of it ai, basketball games. Tom Baughman leaves the book How to Get Rich by Raising Chickens to Bill Flenner in hopes that he too can get a new car in place of his Model A. Naomi Crawford leaves her jolly way of laughing a lot to Glen Walker. Bud Barr wills the use of the Senior room to Dave McMillen and whomever it may concern and also his ability to make it to school six days out of twenty to Richard Weber. Bob Switzer wills his way with, the girls to Millard Frontz and his ability to make long shots from the middle of the floor to Russell Berry. Joetta Zody leaves her secret of how to acquire a diamond to Patricia Byerly. Maxine Finnell leaves her artistic ability to Dick White who seems to like to draw pictures . Marlene Finnell wills to Bob Mitchell her ability to get an A in Public Speaking by beginning all speeches with a question. Albert Nichols leaves his ability to throw erasers with somebody else getting the blame to Iona Shindeldecker. Martha Kurtz leaves her big, innocent blue eyes to Burton Baer. Rose Little leaves her ability to Polish the apple with the teachers to Ray Wallace. Bill Harvey wills his basketball technique to Donna Bell and his ability to stand on his head and spit nickels to Jean McCrory. Bob Goff wills his shy, quiet way to Bob Robinson, also any left-over detention slips he might have. Jean McCready leaves her swimming technique and also the life guard at Pleasant Hill Lake to Glenna Whitinger. Joe Fanello wills his height to Arlen Boone and his dark hair to Leona Spohn. Lavata Williams wills her ?'cool ways to Jean Flenner. Pat Thompson wills her knowledge on how to swab decks to Dean Ulery. Mary Ruth Chamberlin leaves all of her old candy bars to James Markham. Janet Russell leaves her wonderful sewing ability to Howard Stotts. She also leaves her intellectual ability to Jean Flenner in hopes she will be eligible to cheer next year. Jim McGugin wills to the entire Junior Class his knowledge on Parliamentary Law with a fair warning that they'll need it. We do hereby name and appoint as the executor of this our last will and testament, our most honored advisor and friend, Mrs. Martha Farry. Rose Little Class History In September of '40, there were thirty-eight starry eyed youngsters who had awaited anxiously six long years to start that big day of school. The minute the first bell rang we all rushed in to greet our new teacher, Mamie Duncan. Under the inspiring guidance of Miss Duncan we learned the usual reading, Writing and arithmetic. Mrs. Andrews, Mrs. Weatherbee, Mrs. Mowers, Mrs. Barger, Miss Blust, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Hoffman guided us through our first eight years. Little did we realizle how important the training was that these excellent teachers gave us in the formative days of our lives. However through their patience, understanding and guidance we were at last ready for Study Hall. Along the way through these eight years we lost twenty-two of the original members but added fourteen making a total of thirty when we entered high school As we came to be Freshmen our class was divided. The girls were under the direction of Miss Boka and the boys under Mr. I-Ietrick. Nothing too unusual or exciting happened that we can remember. One or two parties were the highlights of the year. The class united in choosing the following as officers: President ........... Sandra Mack Vice President ..... Robert Switzer Secretary ...... Patricia Thompson Treasurer ........... Stanley Snow As we advanced and became Sophomores we still had a divided class. The boys remained under Mr. Hetrick and the girls under Miss Titschinger. The boys weren't as fortunate as the girls because we lost two of our members, Robert Stewart and Leland Wright while all girls remained. I guess the most irnportant event of the Sophomore year was serving for the Junior and Senior Banquet. The following were chosen as officers: President .......... Burdette Barr Vice President ...... William Harvey Secretary ....... Dorothy Campbell Treasurer ........ Kathleen Kohler In our junior year under our advisor Mrs. Hoffman, we gained four new classmates and lost six. Among those that came were Marlene and Maxine Finnell. And later on during the year we added Robert Goff and Robert Snyder. Donald Sauder and Stanley Snow also left us between Sophomore and Junior year, Sandra Mack, Helen Snyder, Dorothy Campbell, Mary Lou DeVore and Roy Fyffe quit during the year. All year long we worked for the Junior Prom which was a big success. With a South Sea Theme , a lowered ceiling and tropical island sunset, we danced to the music of Nels Blocker. Life of the Party our first play, was a great experience with all twenty-seven members participating. At the end of the Junior year we had a farewell party for our beloved advisor, Mrs. Hoffman. , The officers were: President ...... . . James McGugin Vice President . . .... Burdette Barr Secretary ..... ...... S andra Mack Treasurer ....... Patricia Thompson As the school years passed the class of '52 began to make its mark much like other Senior Classes before us. We became Gold Diggers too. The gold we obtained was by such money making projects as plays, selling candy and cakes, sponsoring dances and various other ways. All of this, of course had one main purpose, a Senior Trip. To help us through this important and big year we had our wonderful advisor Mrs. Farry. The Senior officers were: h President. . . . . . . Burdette Barr Vice President. . . . .James McGugin Secretary . . . . . . . .Martha Kurtz Treasurer . . . . . . . . .Marlene Finnell Graduation on May 15 will mark the end of our High School life. Any woman who attends the monthly meetings is a member. The purpose of the group is to raise and spend money for school betterment. t Monthly programs put on by the first eight grades under the direction of the homeroom teachers, and Mr. Strohmenger, are received with great interest and appreciation. This year money was raised by a Variety show featuring members of the community and put on two nights in Lucas, and one night in Butlerg a bake sale: and the sale of floor wax. The club this year presented each grade with a Bible story book at Christmas: sponsored the annual Athletic Banquet and Family Nightg and as this goes to press is discussing a number of projects one of which will become the major expenditure for the year. Season's Games Starting what seemed to be an average season, the Lucas Cubs built quite a reputation for themselves by tournament time. In one of the first games of the season the cub quintet astounded everyone by defeating a powerful Tiro team 38-28. Soon after that the Lucas Cubs defeated Shiloh 45-39. The Cubs met and defeated another good team when they played Ontario 42-41. This meant that the Lucas Five had defeated three teams that were in this strong conference. Another exciting game was with Lexington. The strong Lexington team led most of the way, but during the last quarter the Cubs started to close the margin. Time ran out, however, ending the game with the score of 38-35 for our second defeat.
