Class Prophecy It was a bright sunny day in September of 1961 and Ihad just received a Lucas Daily Newspaper from a friend of mine. As l had not been back for a number of years, I was quite anxious to read all the news. As I sat down to read the hometown news, what do I see on the front page but Dick Berger running as Republican candidate for mayor with Paul Culler running as his opponent on the Democratic ticket. Professor Jim Bucher has quit teaching in college and is returning home to advise and assist Louis Bromfield in writing his books on agriculture. I-le is giving a lecture at the Town Hall tonight, I see where Pat O'Connell, who is now a foreign correspondent, is ar- riving home from an European tour and will be on Station DOPE for a series of news broadcasts. As I turn to the second page, I see where Pat Jones and her husband have just bought a new house from real estate dealer Gerald McNlillen Hm-m-m. Dave Scott, local farmer who was injured in an automobile acci- dent which put an end to his 1929 Model A Ford, is being nursed back to health by Alice Franklin who is now a graduate nurse. I read that he has no physical in- juries, but is suffering from heartbreak and the loss of his Ford which he just last week painted purple. My, the re is a whole half page ad here. Why it's the official opening of Van's new million dollar garage. Bob Byerly is the manager and will run the business for Van so he can retire and get some sleep. Here is a combined news brief and birth announcement. Bob and Janet Grover have increased their farm acreage by sixty acres, and their family by a set of twins, ln the ads there is a picture of the new employee at Kathryn Roberts and Patty O'Connel1's Beauty Shop. It is Joann Robinson who excels in cutting and styling hair. There are a couple of interesting items in the society column. Loretta Arnold, local telephone operator, accompanied Pat Campbell to Washington to see Pat's husband receive a medal from the Secretary of Navy. Bob Zody is returning home from Hollywood with his beautiful actress wife for a short visit. Bob is a lighting expert for G-M-G studios. In the school news there is a big write-up about Coach Chuck Doggett's team. They have had a very successful year. Superintendent Smith can well be proud of his school. 18
