As l had not been back for a number of years, I was quite anxious to read all the news. As I sat down to read the hometown news, what do I see on the front page but Dick Berger running as Republican candidate for mayor with Paul Culler running as his opponent on the Democratic ticket. Professor Jim Bucher has quit teaching in college and is returning home to advise and assist Louis Bromfield in writing his books on agriculture. I-le is giving a lecture at the Town Hall tonight, I see where Pat O'Connell, who is now a foreign correspondent, is ar- riving home from an European tour and will be on Station DOPE for a series of news broadcasts. As I turn to the second page, I see where Pat Jones and her husband have just bought a new house from real estate dealer Gerald McNlillen Hm-m-m. Dave Scott, local farmer who was injured in an automobile acci- dent which put an end to his 1929 Model A Ford, is being nursed back to health by Alice Franklin who is now a graduate nurse. I read that he has no physical in- juries, but is suffering from heartbreak and the loss of his Ford which he just last week painted purple. My, the re is a whole half page ad here. Why it's the official opening of Van's new million dollar garage. Bob Byerly is the manager and will run the business for Van so he can retire and get some sleep. Here is a combined news brief and birth announcement. Bob and Janet Grover have increased their farm acreage by sixty acres, and their family by a set of twins, ln the ads there is a picture of the new employee at Kathryn Roberts and Patty O'Connel1's Beauty Shop. It is Joann Robinson who excels in cutting and styling hair. There are a couple of interesting items in the society column. Loretta Arnold, local telephone operator, accompanied Pat Campbell to Washington to see Pat's husband receive a medal from the Secretary of Navy. Bob Zody is returning home from Hollywood with his beautiful actress wife for a short visit. Bob is a lighting expert for G-M-G studios. In the school news there is a big write-up about Coach Chuck Doggett's team. They have had a very successful year. Superintendent Smith can well be proud of his school. 18 Shirley Russell, County Home Demonstration Agent, is giving a talk tomorrow to Miss Berry's fourth grade pupils to try to interest them in 4-H work. ' The school is offering a new subject. Janet Flenner is teaching driving with one of those dual-control cars. On the editorial page is a cute illustration. It was drawn by Bill Partin. I've seen some very clever magazine covers he has drawn. I-le has certainly been successful. The newspaper is running a series of stories written by a well known author, Fanchon Mack. I hear that she and her secretary, Peggy O'Leary, are vacationing in Maine. Well, well! Look what I found in the classified ads. Pat Lowe, noted psychiatrist, is opening an office in Lucas. Oh dear, I never realized it was getting so late. I have read every word and am so happy to know what my friends have been doing. My family is clamor- ing for their dinner, so I must lay my paper aside, but thoughts of my friends will linger on. Helen T rurnpowe r 19 Class Will We, the Senior Class of 1951 of Lucas High School, city of Lucas, county of Richland, state of Ohio, feeling it is our duty to surrender the privileges that we have thus far enjoyed, and being of sound mind Qcontrary to opinionl, do make, publish and declare this our last will and testament: We leave the following to the remaining classes: We hereby bequeath to the Junior Class-the balance of our treasury, if anyg the right to publish an annual and go on a trip if they can find enough money. We hereby leave to the Sophomore Class the duty of recognizing the coming Seniors as dignified, and of supplying for the coming Seniors a gorgeous and mag- nificent banquet. We hereby will to the Freshmen the right to come out of their green sur- roundings and the right to put forth the ambition that we had during our four years of high school. To the faculty we leave as follows: To Mr. Barger we leave our gratitude for approving our wild money- making schemes. We also leave the hope that he can keep the halls quieter with the coming Seniors. To Mrs. Farry we leave our bright, shiny and unused ideas and hope they work better for another class. We also leave our solution for noisy check-periods ---just don't have them. ' To Mrs. Hoffman we leave our gratitude for all the time and patience she has used in teaching the kids to dance. To Miss Titschinger we leave a first aid kit for all the accidents that happened in Chemistry Lab. To Miss Boka we leave a pair of shoes to replace those she has worn out chasing after Seniors with overdue library books. To Mrs. Baer we leave all of our unfinished projects and our hopes that they will be completed by the future home economics classes. To Mr. Hetrick we leave a volume on muscle-building by Charles Atlas to help him further in demonstrating his strength and muscles. To Mr. Hauck we leave our dreams of millions and beautiful convertibles. Also our hopes of championship teams in the years to come. To Mrs. Glasscock we are passing on the hair dye that has been left to Mrs. Farry for so many years. Z0 To Mr. Strohmenger we leave the hope that next year's high school classes will be more interested in choir so he won't have to depend upon the Junior Choir so much. To the individuals of the Junior Class we bequeath as follows: Pat Campbell leaves her love letters to Helen Snyder. Loretta Arnold wills her even-temperament to Rose Little. Janet Flenner leaves her walk to Katie Kohler. Pat Lowe leaves her queer laughs to Sisty Zody. Janet Rummel and Bob Grover will their right to occupy the Senior room at noon to Maxine Finnell and to whomever it may concern. Bob Grover also wills his witticism to Bob Goff. Wanda Berry leaves her dependability and natural look to Marlene Finnell. Dick Berger wills his ability to keep his mouth shut to Bob Switzer. Pat Jones bequeaths her late hours and funny jokes to Mary Ruth Chamberlin. Jim Bucher wills his middle name Oscar to Delores Partin, who doesn't have one. Q. and her editorship of the annual to Joe Fanello. Bob Bye rly leaves all the goatees he has grown in his high school days to Bob Snyder. Katie Roberts wills her cute smile and dimples to Jim McGugin. Peggy O'l..eary wills her love of walking to school to Bert Nichols. Chuck Doggett leaves his book on How to Make and Break Dates to Bill Harvey. Floyd Van Meter leaves his technique of sleeping in class and getting by with it to Dot Campbell. Gerald McMillen wills his love of Chemistry and the promptness in which he gets his assignments done to Mary Lou DeVore. Fanchon Mack leaves her luck at blind dates to Naomi Crawford. Z1 Pat O'Connel1 leaves his Irish temper and his bets on paid by Jean McCready. Notre Dame to Dave Scott wills his smooth technique with girls to Ronnie Schrack. Helen Trumpower leaves a challenge of getting an engagement ring to those Junior girls who haven't acquired them yet, Patty O'Conne1l leaves her happy-go-lucky attitude and jolly disposition to Janet Russell. Joann Robinson leaves her secret of how to keep her hair in place and make-up straight to Bud Barr. Bill Partin leaves all the time he has spent in class drawing pin-up girls to Tom Baughman and hopes he will put it to as good use. Bob Zody leaves his good nature and well-liked personality to Pat Thompson who really doesn't need it. Alice Franklin is just glad she's leaving and hopes everyone enjoys high school as much as she has. We do hereby name and appoint on this fifteenth day of May in the year of our lord one thousand nine hundred fifty-one Ql951j, Mrs. Martha Farry as the sole executor of this our last will and testament, Class Song of SI From this high school we are going, Yet here fond mem'ries will dwell, We are now all graduating Wishing all you comrades well There is much for hearts to say On this graduation day. Farewell to you our comrades You have made our years so grand Farewell to you our teachers Always the re to lend a hand With our sad and dewy eyes We will say our last good-byes. Patricia Campbell Z2 Patricia Lowe Class History Thirty-five little first graders started out in the first grade in 1939. Of these original ones, the following are graduating this year: Paul Culler, Gerald McMil1en, Patrick O'Connell, Robert Zody, Loretta Arnold, Wanda Berry, Janet Flenner, Patricia O'Connell, Patricia Jones, Joann Robinson, Janet Rummel, Shirley Russell and Robert Bye rly. David Scott was in the first grade, but left before 1940. Patricia Campbell joined us in the second year. ln the third grade, Donald Smith and Fanchon Mack joined the ranks. The fourth grade didn't add any more of the present Seniors to the list. In the fifth grade Charles Doggett entered alone. The sixth grade added Helen Trumpower, Jerry Niswander, Kathryn Roberts and Alice Franklin. With the addition of these members, the seating capacity crowded out all games, leaving Kathryn to peer around the map. Floyd Van Meter came next andlreceived his nickname Van the first day. We realized we were growing up by the beginning of the eighth grade when we were allowed to go to Study Hall. James Bucher, Richard Berger and Robe rt Grover entered. ln the Freshman year the boys enjoyed seeing the girls during F.H.A. Those burlap sacks were kind of scratchy. The sidewalks got a good scrubbing with handy toothbrushes. At Christmas we had a party in the Study Hall with Miss Russell and Mr. Hetrick attending. We exchanged gifts and usually the girls got the boys' names and visa versa. The boys Qmostlyj found yellow scarfsg the girls perfume. The class officers for that year were: President ........ . . Floyd Van Meter Vice-President . . . . Charles Doggett Secretary ..... . . Jerry Niswander Treasurer .... . . .Robert Byerly News Reporter . . . . . . . . . . Fanchon Mack In the Sophomore year, early in the second six weeks, Rebecca Moore, our golden haired gal, left us far behind. Lester is taking over now. The class offi- cers for that year were: President . . . . . Charles Doggett Vice-President. . . . . . Rose Fanello Secretary-Treasurer. . . . . . Wanda Berry David Scott came back to us in the eleventh grade, Our memory of him was very dim. All year we worked for something Qfundsl. What for? Junior Prom, of course. With a dreamy theme Moonlight and Roses , a lowered ceiling and a rose garden, Qwith a gold fish, and an out of the world banquetg who could ask for more ? Our first play was a real experience. The name of it was Heroes Just Happen . All twenty-eight members participated to make the play a success. For Junior officers we chose: President, Charles Doggettg Vice-President, Jerry Niswander, Secretary-Treasurer, Janet Rummel, News Reporter, Robert Grover. Z3 A picnic at the Lucas Park highlighted the end of the Junior year. Never was there such a hot contest between ball teams as the one we had that evening. Everyone enjoyed the hot dogs, and the yummy cakes, with the old faithful Jones potato chips and pop. Adding to enthusiasm were our chaperones, Charles and Martha Farry, and Tom and Isabelle Hoffman. On Labor Day, most of the Seniors took a trip to a church not far from Lucas. That Sunday was the day of Rose Fanello's wedding. Although we miss her we know she's very happy with Clarence Harris. We, the 5l Seniors, couldn't believe we were actually going to start our last year. We didn't look much different, taller maybe. ' Like all Seniors, we decided to be gold-diggers. Objective--a trip. This we attempted by selling candy and cakes and various other means! E 5 Most everyone has given out his pictures and name cards. The United States Navy has a part of the Sl Seniors. Jerry heard the call and answered. We miss you, Jerry, With two six-weeks periods facing us, our main thought is graduation, then, of course, commencement, and the last week we'll all be together, our trip. During this all important year we elected as officers: President . . . . . . . . . . . . . Robert Grover Vice-President . . Robert Zody Secretary. . . . .
