Traditions Continue It is with great pleasure that the 1986-87 Wolf yearbook staff has presented a collection of memories and traditions in celebration of the 75th year of Loyola ' s history. It would seem appropriate, after focusing on Loyola ' s past, to present a new beginning, one of many which is a part of Loyola tradition. On March 16, 1987, Margaret Mary Garitty, a 1986 graduate of LSU in petroleum engineering, was married to Anthony Joseph Zelenka, a 1986 graduate of Loyola with a de- gree in management marketing. The ceremony was held in the Holy Name Church. Members of both the bride and grooms families have also been a part of the Loyola family history. Mr. Earl James Garitty Jr., father of the bride, graduated from Loyola in 1947 from the School of Pharmacy. Mr. Daniel Edward Ze- lenka, father of the groom, graduated from Loyola in 1962 from the Dental School The Holy Name of Jesus Church is the facal point of spiritual life on the Loyola campus. It is also the location of many weddings and special school ceremonies. Kurt Coste Photography

Loyola In A Changing World The last seventy-five years have been full of changes for the world, and certainly Loyola is no exception. This is perhaps best illustrated by the coming and goings of the differ- ent academic disciplines that have been offered for study. For example, did you know that from 1917 to 1919 Loyola had a school of Nautical Sci- ences, Marine Architecture, and Ma- rine Engineering? Or about the School of Oratory that existed from 1917 until 1920? For a short time in the same period there were also schools of Mechanics, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Post-Graduate Medicine, and a Wireless Telegraph School. For a time during WW II, there was even a Civilian Pilot Training Program. Today ' s Loyola student that comes to study business or communi- cations might be surprised to learn that some of the school ' s more popu- lar courses of study in the past in- cluded Dentistry, and Pharmacy, both of which lasted quite a long time. The school of Dentistry was not phased out until 1972 and Medi- cal Technology was just closed last year. The ROTC program is being moved to another location. The schools and colleges presently a part of Loyola are the College of Arts and Sciences, which has been around as long as Loyola; the College of Business Administration, which was added in 1947; the School of Law, which was established for the night division in 1914 and the day division in 1925; the College of Mu- sic, started in 1932; and City College, which grew from the school of Com- merce and Finance which was found- ed in 1917. The photos on these two pages are a glimpse into the Loyola of past years ... j 15
