When I see the limitations imposed on man's powers of action and inquiry and observe how all his efficiency is aimed at nothing but the satisfaction of his needs, which in turn has but one purpose- to prolong his miserable existence- and when I see how all his reassurance on certain aspects of his inquiries is little more than a dreamy resignation, in that he chooses to bedaub the walls of his prison with motley figures and bright prospects- all this, William, makes me mute. I turn in upon myself and find a world there, again more in a spirit of presentiment and dour loAnging than dramatically or with vitality. Then everything grows hazy in my mind and I go on smiling dreamily at the world. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , mf: wwiifgi ' ' W-N-..iz-55W f ,wmenmsgsfw Q 'f52?9z WQIUKQM After considerable argument on the subject, and a little string pulling, the library agreed to remain open till 2 am, during finals week. This proved to be of immense value to the students, especially when considered in con- junction with the fact that some other campus facilities, The Lair and The President's Lounge, were operated on a 24-hour basis during the same period. Other improve- ments of benefit to the student appear to be forthcoming. Plans for changes in the physical plant of the University included such ideas as conversion of The Lair into the bookstore, and bookstore into The Lair. With the erection of a new men's dorm Huesman and Sullivan would be changed primarily into classroom and Faculty office space. L .J .,,. I see how peoples are set against one another, and in silence, unknowingly, foolishly, obediently, innocently slay one another. I see that the keenest brains of the world invent weapons and words to make it yet more refined and enduring. And all men of my age, here and over there, throughout the whole world, see these things, all my generation is experiencing these things with me. What would our fathers do if we suddenly stood up and came before them and proffered our account? What do they expect of us if a time ever comes when the war is over? Through the years our business has been killing,-it was our first calling in life. Our knowledge of life is limited to death. What will happen afterwards? And what shall come out of us?
