Great expectations went for nought as the team the experts picked for first failed to win a single league game, What hapb pened? A loss to Santa Barbara and a mediocre performance '1- in defeating Iordan blunted team spirit. ln retrospect, the deflat' 1 .Q 3 .V ing 7-G loss in the league opener to a weaker St. Anthony club f ' . 'L , Q marked the point of no return. After that, almost nothing went tt ' . s right. Against league champion, Mt. Carmel, Loyola played its X best game but to no avail with one TD called back and another A ' thwarted 5 yards from the goal as time ran out. A fine team If 5 effort against Notre Dame was nullified by a few crucial lapses. l And so it went. No one really knows why a team fails. Perhaps the explana- ' ' tion is this, the absence of confidence in one's own skills, the 3' lack of the sure-handed team effort that is the mark of a cham- pion. Individuals did their best, but it was not enough. Loyola's Cubs were a team that needed a bit of luck to win, but were never quite able to force their own breaks. Losing is never pleasant, but the remembranec of this year's battles may be just the incentive that will fire the returning squadmen to next year's championship.
