The carefree habits of a lazy summer are set aside. Keeping pace with the swift changes of nature's seasons, the growing boy puts off his immaturity to rise to the full stature of manhood. Loyola is growing, renewing itself. With the dawning of a new decade, a new era, the school is embarking upon an arduous and costly program of modernization to meet the challenge of this age. Old campus landmarks are destined to fall away as so many leaves in autumn to make way for a new and stur- dier growth. This cycle of life is sometimes painful, sometimes joyous, never dull. To this life, this spirit of Loyola - most especially to the graduates who have grown to maturity dur- ing their four memorable years here - this EL CAMINO is dedicated. 5 'haul' Nu-I FR. Loyalist The LOYALIST, the student newsmagazine, re- gales its readers six times each year with its inter- esting and clever accounts of all the many Cub activities. Since the LOYALIST is student operated from original layout through Writing copy, taking pictures, paste-up, and on to the final proofreading, it provides a valuable outlet for the journalistic talents and aspirations of the students. Loyola owes a sincere debt of gratitude to the men behind this publication-to Mr. Germann, SJ., moderator, and to his successor, Mr. Cowan, S.l.g to Tom Houston, editor: to Dick Rush, associate editor: to George Taber, sports editorg to the production staff, the nerve center of the publication, and to more than 60 other students who generously devote their time and talent to each sparkling edition of the LOYALIST. ..f-- . -V V - --M' ' ' .-g-n1-I -nic-I -111-1 ,' 'i.' A loss to Santa Barbara and a mediocre performance '1- in defeating Iordan blunted team spirit. ln retrospect, the deflat' 1 .Q 3 .V ing 7-G loss in the league opener to a weaker St. Anthony club f ' . 'L , Q marked the point of no return. After that, almost nothing went tt ' . s right. Against league champion, Mt. Carmel, Loyola played its X best game but to no avail with one TD called back and another A ' thwarted 5 yards from the goal as time ran out. A fine team If 5 effort against Notre Dame was nullified by a few crucial lapses. l And so it went. No one really knows why a team fails. Perhaps the explana- ' ' tion is this, the absence of confidence in one's own skills, the 3' lack of the sure-handed team effort that is the mark of a cham- pion. Individuals did their best, but it was not enough. Loyola's Cubs were a team that needed a bit of luck to win, but were never quite able to force their own breaks. Losing is never pleasant, but the remembranec of this year's battles may be just the incentive that will fire the returning squadmen to next year's championship. Possibly the best known is its fine record of participation in sports. The sophomores and freshmen feel that they have an important part in this tradition, for every year the IayVee team is a serious contender for the Catholic League crown. Coached by Mr. Dilvfuro and Mr. Iohn Flynn, Sl., the Iay- Vees captured second place with a creditable 4-1-2 record. Sophs Barry, Portillo, Hayes and Cappel, the big men up front, teamed with veteran backs Horgan, Sawaya and Greco to provide the backbone of a strong team. Three freshman backs, Bender, Pedrosian and Grady, deserve spe- cial mention for outstanding performances and for the prom- ise of future stardom. Loyola's football fortunes are in safe keeping if these young men continue to play the same brand of aggressive, driving football they displayed this year. IayVeas huddle up: Reese serves the drinks. CeeeI1xiiCHxx1 AggunstEHgger Foes The 1959 season proved extremely promising, al- though the record of 3 wins and 5 losses seems to disagree. The spunky greenies were outweighed all year, but even so, their heavier opponents found the going rough when they met the tough Loyola forwards. The Cees opened their season with a loss against Serra and a close decision with St. Anthony's, but at the season's end they had compiled victories over Cathe- dral, Chaminade and St. Anthony. The Cees of 1959 showed plenty of spirit and determination throughout the year and certainly show much promise for a great varsity tearn of the future. BOTTOM ROW: T. McGann. R. Raqsdale, B. Box. S. S anotuary Society 7:00 AM. comes early every morning, but the members of the Sanctuary Society realize that a small sacrifice of sleep is well worth the benefits. On class days Mr. Thylstrup, S.I., maintains the schedules and sees that all the priests have a server from among the boarders. On weekends and vacations, Bro. McTigue, Sl., enlists the aid of day students for Mass- serving duties. Many of the latter faithfully and generously continue to aid the priests at Holy Mass during the summer months. The Sanctuary Society may be the least publicized activity at Loyola, but it is the one with the most lasting rewards. rf'-H' '.-dgr.'7 ' .- ' .34 1: J 9 '- I: f . Thylstrup, SI. t t I Yf .V The heart of the annual-the production staff: Editor R. Vega. M. O'Connor. D Philipps. R. Hahl. and B. Russell. The annual is a mosaic fashioned by many hands. The little pieces-pictures and captions, art and copy-are gathered from , various sources and then fitted, squeezed, caioled, and finally bludgeoned into place. This year the staff has worked with the sole purpose of capturing in print the full scope of the life and spirit of Loyola. A hearty vote of thanks is owed to all who collabo- rated in this task, and most especially to editor, Rafe Vega, assistant editor, Bruce Russell, Ir., and to Moderator, Mr. Gilpatric, S.I., who worked untiringly to make the IQGO EL CAMINO live up to the students' expectations. For their little known but in- valuable professional services, we thank photographers Iack and Bill Christy, de- voted and generous friends of Loyola, and also Mr. Powell of Mirro-Graphic Yearbooks, who considerably lightened the burdens of a harried moderator. Their play was marked with excep- tional rebounding, excellent outside shooting, and well exe-- cuted patterns, which were the effects of the line coaching by Mr. Cowan, S.I. The record ot ten wins and two losses was due to the high scoring of Wiechman and Bartelt, the re- bounding ot Grady, Qke, and Dominguez, and the backcourt play of Prietto and McCarthy. Although there were individual standouts, balanced team play was the key to the success of 1960 Cees. ln the first round the hot shooting ot Ricky Ragsdale kept the Cubs in contention. In the second round Sitter, Liautaud, and Ragsdale shared high point honors. Sullivan, McGann, Pri- ette, Randolph, and Conkey were other regulars who carrie through with steady floor play and timely scoring, 61 xg. 93 .Si x , N I if cub. 7, 4 fx BOTTOM HOW: R. Eyer, I. Loyola's l'3th annual Fathers- Sons Communion Breakfast was an outstanding demonstration of the spiritual bond that exists between Loyola students and their fathers. After the Mass, which was high- lighted by the moving words of Fr. I. Caldwell, Sl., Loyola crowded down Sunset Boulevard to breakfast at the Moulin Rouge. Louis Prima and his band provided the enter- tainment that followed. Mr. Bill Scully was honored with a gold watch for his generous work with the Dads' Club. The aim of this affair is to promote the father-son relationship and thereby strengthen the bond that exists between God and His creatures. : V N 1 .S Fr. I. The activities connected with Loyola High School are not confined to the students and faculty. Two other organizations--the Dads' Club and the Henry Welch Guild- falso contribute loyal support to Loyola's aca- demic and sports programs. Though the Henry Welch Guild has only a few out- ward activities, these activities are widely felt. Indicative of this are the many schol- arships provided each year to needy stu- dents, The Dads' Club gives outstanding assistance to the school's sports program at the Fathers-Sons rallies. On the spiritual side this group sponsors a truly moving Dads-Sons Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church followed by breakfast at the Moulin Rouge. The old gym. scene of many infamous rallies and basketball games, is to go. The grand- stands, which have been ruining the clothes of Loyola gentle- men for generations, are being torn down. The band house, the auditorium, and the cottage, home of the Pep Club and EL CAMINO, are to meet a similar fate. This great orgy of destruc- tion is not without its purpose.
