San Francisco has rneant much to Miss Eugenie Lacoste. She was born in the Mission district when it consisted of country homesw-the lot on which her home was built comprised 15 acres! She is a graduate of Girls' High School. and of the Univer- sity of California where she specialized in Creek. Latin. Modern Languages, and Botany. Miss Lacoste never intended to be a teacher-she had planned to do graduate work in archaeology. However. when offered a teaching position at Mis- sion High by Mr. Clark. the principal. she accepted. and thus began a career that continued until April l. 1946. when she retired. Wlien Mr. Clark was appointed principal of Lowell he asked Miss Lacoste to come with him. She didn't want to. The Mission district was her 8 homeg Mission High was her school. She loved her work. During World War 1 some 600 Mission stu- dents, under her guidance. had knitted sweaters for the boys in the service. Finally she agreed to come. ln the Fall of 1919 young Miss Lacoste came to Lowell to teach history. In 1926 she became the Vice-Principal tshe had pre- viously served as Dean of Girls in 1923 and 19241. Widely traveled in both Europe and the Orient. Miss Lacoste speaks French fluently. having learned it as a child. When Lowell was smaller the entire student body was able to meet in the auditoriumg Miss Lacoste was the guiding spirit in promoting student govern- ment. She promoted all student activ'ities-pag- eants. court plantings. parties for parents and stu- dents. acted as adviser of The Lowell and encouraged many other activities that made Lowell Lowell. To the gracious lady who served our school for twenty-eight years---to Miss Eugenie Lacoste. whose motto was. Coach Neff has been a Lowellite since September, 1925, coming here from the University of California. Born in Concord, California, he attended elementary school there and was graduated from Mt. Diablo high school. He was a halfback on the football team, star forward on the basketball team, first-string pitcher on the baseball team, a shot-putter and pole- vaulter on the track team. Young Neff attended the University of California, majoring in economics. He participated in freshman basketball. During his twenty-two years at Lowell, Neff- coached basketball teams have won eleven unlim- ited, and six 130-lb. championships. In addition to his school duties, Knot shown in the pictures are the days and days of after-school training of his teamsl , Coach Neff has coached the Borlo Athletic Club. He has two sons, Bill, a graduating senior, and Pete. who is coming here next term from Presidio Junior High. Coach Walt Drysdale can look forward to next year when seven of this year's starting nine are returning. The first string consisted of: lb. Bob Rowell, 2b, George Veroning 3b. Bill Marsieog ss. The team won three of its nine games, beating Poly, 6 to 33 Lincoln, 11- to lg and St. Ignatius, 5 to 1. Both Bob Rowell and Lloyd Cunningham were outstanding batsmen, hitting well over .400 for the year. Since more of the players on this yearis team are either sophomores or juniors. Lowell should have a first division club next year. Cardinal baseball team has -food seasongwins three- surprises everyone. . 'mr CARD SDCCER RETURNS This was the first year since 1940 that Lowell has put out a soccer team, and the boys showed real promise. The usual starting lineup was as follows: left wing. Blanzg left forward, Hernandezg center forward, Davilog right forward, Gluckmang right wing, Ching center half. Frankel, right half, John- song left half, Cornewg fullbacks, Oliver and Orloff. Probably the most exciting game of the year for the lnjuns was that with Washington. Both teams scored in the opening minutes of play and then were dead- locked until the last five seconds of play when an Eagle player made a corner kick, winning the game, 2 to 1. Even though the seasonis outcome was very poor for the Cards, much credit should be given to Coach Elmer Harris and his hard-working team. 15111111 xnzzx' M. Frankel, E. Hernandez, R. Davila, J.
