Ulivery issue of the GUMBO is a mirror-a mirror reflecting the life of the University. It cannot bring everything within its rangeg yet, it shows enough of the personalities, student activities, organizations, athletics, scholarship and fun faithfully to represent the whole. LSU is an enormously busy place and underlying the great variety of its life is the single purpose for which the University is here, to provide an education for students who want it. No one would bother to try to create a university for any other purpose. All of the things reflected in the GUMBO have a place in the serious but pleasant work of education. To the staff the publication of the GUMBO represents long hours of planning and hard work. I want to extend to them my congratulations. This interesting book will some day arouse memories of things otherwise easily forgotten.
