Founders Day 1987 Whereas establishing an Academy in the said county for the education of youth will be attended with great ad- vantages to the State in general, and the County of Franklin in particular ... These are the words of the original charter approved by the State of North Carolina General Assembly on January 6, 1787. Two hundred years later the college administration, facul- ty, alumni, special guests, and friends gathered in Holton Gymnasium to cel- ebrate the continuing legacy and tra- dition of a very special Junior College. Among the notables participating in the celebration were keynote speaker Dr. William C. Friday, President Emeritus of The University of North Carolina; The Honorable Robert B. Jordan, III, Lieuten- ant Governor of North Carolina who represented the State of North Caroli- na; and Bishop Carlton P. Minnick, Jr., who gave greetings from The North Carolina United Methodist Church. Also among the well-wishers were Louis- burg ' s Mayor, Lucy T. Allen; Ben E. Jor- dan Jr., Chairman of the Board of Trust- ees; Harold A. Morris, President of the Alumni Association; Dr. George Ann Willard, Chair of the Bicentennial Com- mittee; and Lisa Buffaloe, President of the Student Government Association for the 1986-87 academic year. Dr. Friday said, The great adven- ture of learning and the freeing of a young mind from the boundaries of fear, prejudice, despair, and bigotry are through the wonders of knowl- edge and its joys and compassion. This is why Louisburg College and The Uni- versity of North Carolina are so impor- tant, and this is why that what is done today on these campuses by these teachers is so critical to the future.
