That Was Then In 1787 Louisburg College began its long and distinct journey into thie history books of North Carolina and the United States. During the early years, the Col- lege endured all the problems any institu- tion of its kind could possibly encounter. But with great leadership and the faith of a town and county, the small liberal arts college would make it into the Twentieth Century with the spirit and zeal it would take to educate and serve those who would enter its doors. Through the Civil War and The Depression, Louisburg Col- lege would become the nations oldest and proudest chartered, two-year, church-related, coeducational junior col- lege. Today, Louisburg College continues to be a leader in aiding students to be- come more competent in the fundamen- tals of learning. Two hundred years later the college administration, facul- ty, alumni, special guests, and friends gathered in Holton Gymnasium to cel- ebrate the continuing legacy and tra- dition of a very special Junior College. Jordan, III, Lieuten- ant Governor of North Carolina who represented the State of North Caroli- na; and Bishop Carlton P. Minnick, Jr., who gave greetings from The North Carolina United Methodist Church. Also among the well-wishers were Louis- burg ' s Mayor, Lucy T. Allen; Ben E. Morris, President of the Alumni Association; Dr. George Ann Willard, Chair of the Bicentennial Com- mittee; and Lisa Buffaloe, President of the Student Government Association for the 1986-87 academic year. Dr. Friday said, The great adven- ture of learning and the freeing of a young mind from the boundaries of fear, prejudice, despair, and bigotry are through the wonders of knowl- edge and its joys and compassion. This is why Louisburg College and The Uni- versity of North Carolina are so impor- tant, and this is why that what is done today on these campuses by these teachers is so critical to the future. Happy Birthday Louisburg College with many more to come. Just think — Two hundred years of dedicated service.
