During the early years, the Col- lege endured all the problems any institu- tion of its kind could possibly encounter. But with great leadership and the faith of a town and county, the small liberal arts college would make it into the Twentieth Century with the spirit and zeal it would take to educate and serve those who would enter its doors. Through the Civil War and The Depression, Louisburg Col- lege would become the nations oldest and proudest chartered, two-year, church-related, coeducational junior col- lege. Today, Louisburg College continues to be a leader in aiding students to be- come more competent in the fundamen- tals of learning. As Louisburg College en- ters its third century, the traditions that made the College great will continue in its future. It was a time of simpler things, wtien it was easy to share peaceful moments on the front lawn. It was a time for May Day Celebrations and time for policy making, A time when one could dream for the future, and a time to remember those things we cherished This Is 1987 The tmes txjve chongeO tcx the rrost pert txft students stl en oy tr e smple ttir Qs r He The excrtemeot n leomng new ttirvgs and meetng new people It s still a time to experience the magic of friendship ttvat will lost through the ages A time to get involved m Me Its a time to retox and enjoy ttie good things colege He con bnng A time to remonnbef. Founders Day 1987 Whereas establishing an Academy in the said county for the education of youth will be attended with great ad- vantages to the State in general, and the County of Franklin in particular ... These are the words of the original charter approved by the State of North Carolina General Assembly on January 6, 1787. Two hundred years later the college administration, facul- ty, alumni, special guests, and friends gathered in Holton Gymnasium to cel- ebrate the continuing legacy and tra- dition of a very special Junior College. Among the notables participating in the celebration were keynote speaker Dr. William C. Friday, President Emeritus of The University of North Carolina; The Honorable Robert B. Jordan, III, Lieuten- ant Governor of North Carolina who represented the State of North Caroli- na; and Bishop Carlton P. Minnick, Jr., who gave greetings from The North Carolina United Methodist Church. Also among the well-wishers were Louis- burg ' s Mayor, Lucy T. Allen; Ben E. Jor- dan Jr., Chairman of the Board of Trust- ees; Harold A. Morris, President of the Alumni Association; Dr. George Ann Willard, Chair of the Bicentennial Com- mittee; and Lisa Buffaloe, President of the Student Government Association for the 1986-87 academic year. Dr. Friday said, The great adven- ture of learning and the freeing of a young mind from the boundaries of fear, prejudice, despair, and bigotry are through the wonders of knowl- edge and its joys and compassion. This is why Louisburg College and The Uni- versity of North Carolina are so impor- tant, and this is why that what is done today on these campuses by these teachers is so critical to the future. Some do the obvious, they go out and build a snowman, most of them throw snowballs, and some go sledding. But some students found the snowdays to be a good time to moke up classwork and others found more time to sleep. Under the leadership of Don Steinert, Instructor of Music and Director of the Glee Club and Ensemble, the trip to England was made possible. The trip was in keeping with the Bicentennial celebration of Louisburg Col- lege and its great tradition of the edu- cational experience. Louisburg Col- lege has long been associated with Methodism, and in 1909 was donated to the Methodist Episcopal Church. When Miss Sarah Foster joined the faculty in 1945, she immediately formed a small group of singers from the larger Glee Club, and as the Choristers they sang during worship services at area churches and for civic functions in the surrounding communities. After being called the Chapel Choir for an extended period thereafter, the name Ensemble has been associated with them since 1975. On the trip with the Ensemble group were Dr. and Mrs. Norris, William Hinton and sev- eral non-singing students. It was indeed a very special day for the many alumni that started their college education at Louisburg Col- lege. It was a day on which many former students got reaquainted. Louisburg College has 12,000 liv- ing Alumni across the country, according to Harold Morris, President of the Alumni Association. Former President Cecil Robbins was on hand to greet stu- dents who were here during his administration. Dr. J. Allen Norris, President of Louisburg College, wel- comed the many who attended the day ' s activities at the Alumni Day luncheon. The day was filled with many events. The 440TH National Guard Band played on the front lawn of Main Building before Alumni and Friends of the college. There was also a performance of the Bicenntennial Play that Roy Mize penned for the Bicentennial Year. The highlight of the day would be the Bicentennial Ball later that evening, with the Bo Thorpe band which played enjoyable music to which everyone danced the night away. Drake and Assistant Coach Rod Wyatt ex- pected all three players to give the team the needed leadership that a predominantly freshman team would need. Coach Cotten said of Newton, who led the Region X in scoring with 17.5 points per game this year and was third leading rebounder in the region with 10.5 per game.
