And the beginning of a new school year is a bettersweet mixture of exhileration and dread. Amid the straining to unload cars, the struggle to arrange rooms, and the effort to get oriented to Louisburg, new faces lace all kinds of fantasies and hopes together. Second year students know they are beginning the end. First year students don ' t know what they ' re beginning. All they know are rumors and campus lore. But the common bonds of late summer warmth, confusing farewells, and impending classes let all the students feel a sense of community, the first sign of Louisburg College times. Recreation is an art at Louisburg. Many dedicated people spend hours and hours polishing their pool games. Some students have even requested that the college have a major in pool. But administrators haven ' t taken their cue yet. And the regular cook outs and pig pickings that go on throughout the year at the college demonstrate the truth of the old Franklin County proverb; No one ever starved to death at Louisburg College. For culture, all a student has to do is hop in his Trans Am and highball to Raleigh. N.C. State, the dream of so many Louisburg students, offers an abundance of inspirational activities and refining experiences. Many students have noticed that between Louisburg and Raleigh is a small haven called Rolesville. Often, on balmy Sunday afternoons, small groups of students can be seen admiring the fine work on display in the front lawn of the cemetery monument factory there. SPf •i NORTH CAROLINA OLESVILLE CITY LIMIT r CARTER HALL SLIDE The pressure gets too great — even in a sleepy little town like Louisburg. And the tension gets worse and worse, like a spring being wound too tightly, like a rubber band being stretched too far, like an apron spring tugged too far. So the student has to get out, must go wild, forget the future for a few hours, and just spread himself over the present. The homework will always be there. The tests will always be there, but in the face of such eternal veraties, no normal Louisburg student could feel any sense of dignity if he hadn ' t had his share of parties, road trips, and spontaneous hall slides, signs of escape. Wright Dorm transformed from the domain of Clara Bass to the graveyard of Pattie Julia Wright, the home office of a mad scientist, a zoo of weird creatures in the night and a place of murderous noises that set spines tingling all over campus The Plank Theater, for three nights was a haunted house full of fiendish foul ghouls. On a lighter note, the multi-purpose room had merry revelers in it, at a costume dance. People that never did get tired of dressing up as kids had a chance to don crazy clothes once more. 41 ( . 42 Talent Show With Ted Mack and Ed Sullivan obsolete, Louisburg must fill the need that some people feel to perform. The Talent Show this year revealed that even a small college can be crawling with talent. From singers to dancers to jugglers, a packed auditorium was entertained for nearly three hours as act after act thrilled the audience with hithertofore unrealized talent. Several of the participants were offered jobs in New York and Las Vegas, but being more concerned with getting a good education than with living an exciting life and making a lot of money, all the performers chose to remain at Louisburg and finish their degrees. 43 The Signs of Lou-U NORTH CAROLINA STATE LINE VANCE CO Faculty and staff as well as students have to abide by these signs . . . Do Not Enters as well as No Parking Here . Do they abide by these signs? Well, they give it their best shot . . . But life around here doesn ' t just revolve around these signs. Worried faces, pale and tense are a sign that exams are nigh. Green leaves sprouting on the trees is a sign that Spring is on its way. Books flying in the air is a sign that the end of the semester is about here. 44 I 45 Homecoming was in November this year. The Homecoming game was against Ferrum College, and it was a hot one. Nineteen-year- old Billy Norris was crowned Homecoming King at half-time of the game. He was elected King in a cafeteria poll the week before. Others on the King ' s Court were, Walter Krentz, Tommy Freeman, Kelton Durham, Royce Richard- son, Tony Autry, and Vernon Bag- ley. There was a dance on Friday and Saturday of that week. Both were hosted by the well-bal- anced music agenda of The Ex- perience from Durham, which played Beach Music, disco and a little rock and roll. Approximately 400 people showed up for the dance after the Homecoming game Saturday night. There were theme days throughout the week of Home- coming. The days were: Toga Day, Western Day, Hat Day, Fif- ties Day and 2001 Day. All in all, it was a good experience, and Freshman students looked for- ward eagerly to Homecoming 81. AND MORE FRIENDS Cupid 73 Cultural Events 74 Cultural Events Cultural Events 75 Folk Festival The Balsam Gap Boys, four teenagers from Sanford carried away the grand cham- pionship trophy from this year ' s Louisburg College and Franklin County Folk Festival held in the college auditorium. The Folk Fes- tival took place Friday and Saturday nights, March 27 and 28. There were clogging groups, singers, fiddlers, dulcimer players and just about any other kind of country bluegrass musician you can imagine. Also performing were professionals such as Mike Seeger, Ola Belle Reed, John McCutcheon and the Nee Ningy Band. The same weekend saw not only the festi- val, but the National Whistlers Convention and the Ben Franklin Street Fair downtown. There was dancing in the street Saturday afternoon, before the crowd that had swooped down on Louisburg returned to the auditorium to see and hear the rest of the Folk Festival, which came to a climactic conclusion around twelve that night. Balsam Gap Boys win Grand Championship Award Folk Festival 77 Mello Yello Chug and Pie Throw October was a big month for off-the- wall activities. Two of these were sponsored by Kenan Dormitory. The first was the Mello Yellow Chugging Contest, where several cases of this popular soft drink went down the gul- lets of Louisburg College students. Where in the world did they ever learn to drink like that? Next, there was the great Kenan Dorm Pie Throw. For a price, step right up and sling a cream pie right into the face of your favorite, or not-so-favorite professor. Dean Eller, Dean Morgan, Joe Farmer, and Ray Mize, among other notables, met a creamy fate at the hands of the stu- dents. The only thing that finally halted the slaughter of such innocents was that the folks in charge ran out of cream pies to sell. But this struggle is re- duced to the purest elements: two groups of people, one group determined to pull the other group in its direction. Feet are clamped into the earth; backs clinch like fists; arms stiffen; hands harden as the rope goes as taut as it can. Teeth grind; every mind turns to elephant, to hippopotamus, to stone. For a few seconds, the combatants are caught up in a dream of total immobility, statues of flesh straining against a single direction marked by a rope. Hands begin to burn; balance is headquarters, but the war drops down to the hindquarters. You win with the legs — lean back and dig in. - gSSllS ■ in 2s 92 Tug of War Tug of War 93 Parent ' s Day It was a bright, cool day in the early part of November. Students with their shiniest faces eagerly showed their parents all over the campus of the place that had grown so dear to their hearts over the course of a semester, or perhaps during the year before. Class officers spoke to an assembled crowd of parents and students, along with Dean Brown, President Norris and special guests. After a sumptuous dinner in the cafeteria and Multi-Purpose Room the parents conferred with the professors the rest of the day. All went home convinced that their children were getting one of the best education to be found for the love of money. 94 Parents Day Parents Day 95 Louisburg College • Founded 1787 Louisburg, North Carolina 27549 • (919) 496-2521 Third Century Campaign Louisburg, as the sign says, is the oldest junior college in the south. It ' s one thing to have been around for such a long time — quite an- other thing to be around for another few hun- dred years. But for any institution to survive, it must stretch itself toward the future — that ' s what nourishes a college. The past may give a school its identity and its reputation, but the future gives that school life. A college must be equipped to deal with the regularly changing needs of the society it serves. John Lennon, former Beatle, one of the driving forces behind rock and roll as we know it today was gunned down in the streets of New York City . . . called the first rock and roll assasination. Peo- ple mourned world-wide, and mu- sic minded students at Louisburg paid their own tributes in their own ways. Beatle music from the sixties and later Lennon music came from dorm room windows. And everyone knew for sure the answer to a question that had been asked for ten years — no, the Beatles will never get to- gether again. John Lennon 107 The Preppy Look ; It once meant preparatory. Maybe the first place you heard it was in Love Story. Originally, it referred to snobby kids who were sent to exclu- sive, expensive, private schools so they could be groomed for the Ivy League colleges: Yale, Har- vard, Dartmouth, and Louisburg. Preppy meant Jaguars, Alfa-Romeos, and other cars your father had built for you on your eighteenth birthday. But even preppy has become democratized, human- ized, and sandforized. Now preppy means col- ors — usually colors that aren ' t found in nature. Pinks that remind you of Pepto-Bismol. Greens that remind you of Green Goddess salad dressing. And yellows that remind you of Tweety Bird. Preppy means add-a-bead necklaces, gold chains, and signet rings. Preppy means animals: alligators, penguins, polo ponies, koala bears, kangaroos, Wallabees, lions, tigers, and bears.
