More than 700 students coming from 7 states and 7 foreign countries to the slow southern living of Louisburg. What brings them here? Many things. But whatever the reason, they come, and they grow. Ask any sophomore. (Well, almost any sophomore.) He will tell you that he has changed at Lou-U. He ' s ma- tured; physically, intellectually and spiritually. Some grow more than oth- ers, but that ' s what it ' s all about. From A to Z From A to Z Mfc A A is for Allnighters. Remember being up all night working on that important term project that you just started the day before that it was due? Of course, you should have started sooner. You promised yourself you wouldn ' t put it off like you usually do, but somehow you find yourself grimly facing another all-nighter. Since you ' ve done it before, you know what to expect. All the stages are familiar; you begin about eight with the confidence that you ' ll be through by four and get a couple of hours sleep, but it never seems to work out that way. Twelve to three are the hardest hours. Everybody else in the world is asleep. By dawn you feel like a walking zombie. As you walk in class that morning, everyone else can tell 4 All-nighters what you did last night. The all-nighters do have their rewards; sleep never felt so good and the wonderful feeling to be able to say that It ' s finished. Many all-nighters are spent socializing (getting to know that friend from Psych class, sharing secrets with your roommate or just a group of friends getting together). Afternoons at Lou-U are a welcome time during the day. Everyone has their own special thing. To the sunwor- shippers, its tossing frisbees on the lawns in front of the dorms, or laying out in the sun. There is always an occa- sional skateboarder or lacrosse player. Others like to recuperate from the night before or rest-up for the up-coming one. Naps are sometimes a wel- come relief from the enveloping tensions of the life of a student. Escapism can be found in the soap operas. On many halls at three o ' clock everyone is huddled around the television interested in what is going to happen to Luke and Laura on General Hospital. At Lou-U it is evident that anything goes. Afternoons B is for the Beasties . B Picture this: 7:30 in the morning a Lou-Uer stag- gers into the cafeteria wearing last night ' s T-shirt and baggy jeans. He makes his way over to the milk machine and gets himself a drink. Relief appears upon his face, and he slowly stumbles out the door with a look of satisfaction. Sound familiar? I guess that everyone gets the beasties every now and then (some more than others). Backgammon is a favorite indoor game of many people at Louisburg College. In the past couple of years it has gained in popularity with an amazing amount of speed. Beasties On a lot of warm weekends, the Lou-U students go to the beach. Whether it be Atlantic, Carolina or Myrtle, we go to soak up the rays (actually trying to catch up with the ones who cut classes all week out by Drake Beach ) St. Paul ' s Episcopal Church in Louisburg sponsored a refugee family of 13 from Vietnam this year. The Ta Fam- ily belonged to the much pitied group of Boat People . They left their home in Saigon in October of 1978 with an unknown destination, and little food or money, but with the help of Lou-Y ' s Christian Life Council the house just outside Louisburg was prepared and donations were made. Now the Ta Family is adjusting well to the United States. Of all of the beasts from Lou-U, we ' ll always remem- ber Ralph, school mascot, who mysteriously disappeared last summer. We have students from 9 foreign countries at Lou-U this year. They came to get an education in this small town, to learn about our customs and to get to know all of us better. Everyone will always remember Safari wearing one of his three piece suits and the Lebanese guys in the cafeteria eating lunch with their outspoken leader, Fadhi. It is evident that there are a lot of special people on our campus if we just reach out and meet them. 16 Commuters last hui noi least, don ' t forget ( lipid ' s Bow. it strikes when you leasl expet i it. Conversation up there includes basketball, basketball and more basketball. All of the guys on the team grow very close; sort of like a big family. Go up there sometime and you ' ll hear the thud of a basketball being dribbled in the hall. (Davis inhabitants are also known for dribbling to the front of the cafeteria line.) ■::fi!-r| 18 Dorms ilff lli Franklin The most famous wards of Franklin live in the Franklin II Zoo. They change sheets hanging on their balcony like a neon sign attracting people to drop on in and set a spell. The Zoo even has T-shirts designed by their resident-ariisl house counselor, )im Hunt. |im McNeil, a resident of the Zoo, has written a song entitled (what else) The Zoo. The third verse and chorus are as follows: Now I ' m hopein you ' ll come and see me real soon, Even if you think that I ' m a loon. And if you haven ' t heard the latest as you usually do, I ' m living in Louisburg ' s Franklin II Zoo. Chorus. Spending my life in the Zoo, Spending m life in the Zoo, No matter what you say or do, I ' m spending my life in the Zoo. The Zoo has gained a sort of cult following. Of course there is a Franklin III. They ' re a crazy, bunch of fun-loving guys, too. Kenan Kenan is the place to be on cam- pus. It ' s the only co-ed dorm at Lou- U; the first and second floors housing women and the third, men. Life in Ke- nan is probably not much different from life in any other dorm, but it is a big challenge for the women to sur- vive. Firecrackers going off at ungodly hours, homemade cannons, and wa- ter balloons dropped on your head from third floor immediately come to mind. Then there were the annoying little things that disturbed people trying to study (both of them). Things like all-night parties, the phone that constantly rang but was never an- swered, and the music which was al- ways too loud. Of course a lot of fun things happened; like hall-slides on first floor, the close Kenan com- radeship that ultimately prevailed, fi- nally making friends with the guys up- stairs, and hanging around with your buddies on the hall. Kenan really is the best of both worlds . 20 Dorms i Hillman is one of the most fun-lov- ing places on campus. It is known for being a completely different world from the rest of campus. You can al- ways find someone to talk to. Com- radeship is evident here. Loud music is inevitable in Hillman. Hillman is noted for its pebble-beach (sun- bathing mecca), frisbee on the lawn and its separation from the rest at the campus, lust go on over there any- time, the boys are always dead-ready for a good time. Hillman Dorms 21 Main Main building has a few dorm rooms in it. (Not many stu- dents can say that they live in a historic site). Main dwellers are in the middle of Davis and Franklin dorms, and they seem to hang around with some of those guys. Main build- ing was opened in 1857 as Louisburg Female College and is the oldest brick building on campus. 22 Main Merritt Merrill houses a quite diversified group of girls. Mam ot the female athletes live here; basketball and volleyball players. Then there are the preps and the fun-lovers. Of course in any dorm ou can find a wide variety of people. Once this year Merritt played a game called The Room-mate Game, fashioned after The Newlywed Game. It ' s ama ing how much you can learn about a person after living with them a lew short months. Some people were shocked that their roommates had learned so much about them. All in all, it was a lot of fun, .is many girls decided that they wouldn ' t want to trade roommates and that Merritt really is ,1 ni e plai e to live. Merritt 23 Patten Patten dorm has gained the reputation of being the Big House for the Big Boys . Almost everyone is familiar with Patten ' s nightly get-togethers on 2nd floor. Patten seems to have a unique sense of brotherhood and friendship be- tween its inhabitants. Since there are a lot of baseball play- ers living in Patten, they show great sportsmanship in their many contests with the Franklin II Zoo. Patten seems to win these all the time. Hillman may have a mellow bunch, but Patten is always wide-open. After visiting Patten, I sensed a feeling of comradeship and pride for their dorm. Wright Wright dorm is known lor its long derm meeting, close friendships on each hall, and its inill sessions in the hall mentioning Miss ( lara Bass, long-term resident dorm coun- bathrooms Wright dorm is quiet at times, so its pretty easy selor, she is always ready to give advice and aid someone to study; but every once in a while everything breaks loose, who needs help. Alter living in Wright, .1 family feeling It would seem an injustk e to mention Wright Dorm without pervades W right 25 The Daily Drudgery of Classes seem to get all of us down every now and then. Remember those mornings when you woke up at 8:15 a.m. for your 8:00 a.m. class? Some days just seem to drag on and on. Weekends are a welcome relief to the life of a student. End of the week jaunts down to Chick ' s are some of the happy times that make up for the Daily Drudgery of Classes. 26 The Daily Drudgery of Classes Don ' t forget those Daring (K)nights of Adventure! All of those nights thai you and your buddies visited your friends of the opposite sex on open dorm nights, going from room to room. The mid-week trips to Crazy Zacks and Edwards come to mind, as you test out your shagging abilities to the Embers singing, I Love Beach Music. Yes, many (K)nights of Ad- venture come to mind when thinking about this year at Louisburg. Damsels in distress, you need not look far, be- cause Sir Lancelot does live in Louis- burg. There are always a couple of daring knights lurking about some- where. )ust look around. Mr. Charley-John Smith, drama professor, has proved to be an excellent addition our college faculty with his undertaking of much- needed theatre renova- tions, and the revival of in- terest in drama that has taken place. D Look Homeward Angel 28 Drama .. — .:- ■{ - ' ■■'  I sohol E is for Energy (or lack of it). This year, we all felt the squeeze of the energy crunch. It seems that some types of energy can be found at Lou-U, but better sources must be round for the future. The CLC successfully raised money for Easter Seals this year for crippled children. E Energy (or lack of it) 29 F The annual Folk Festival was an exicting event this year. The weekend included street dancing, arts and crafts exhibitions, a whistling contest and talented musi- cians playing in the Auditorium. The grand prize winner was Bobby St. Sing, a LC sophomore playing his fiddle. The vocal award went to the Beaux Gestes from Alert, and the clogging award to the Pigeon Valley Cloggers. I think that everyone will remember young Clifton Preddy from Franklinton who could out-clog just about any- body. The Folk Festival is a good ole country hoe- down with lots of fiddling, laughter, and good times. 30 Folk Festival Folk Festival 31 Louisburg College is located in Franklin County, an easy going and basically rural county. Small communities make up a large portion of the population such as Slosh, Lick Skillet, S ' lert, Alert, Royal, Youngsville, Wood, White Level, Daddysville, and Pine Ridge. The list almost seems endless. Agriculture is one of the main sources of income. Franklin really is a charming place to live. 4 32 Franklin County Four-wheeling is another favorite past-time to those .it Lou-U with a 4- WD truck. During the year we all saw a variety of faces; happy faces, sad ones, excited ones and bored ones. But we ' ll all remember the faces of Louisburg with a happy smile upon our face, because Louisburg was a special place for us. One of the favorite out-d oor pas- times at Lou-U was frisbee throwing. It kept many from being ultimately bored. 34 Faces G Cj is tor Graduation. With exams fin- ished, graduates awaited the end of the year while Freshmen anticipated the next one. Goodbyes. A couple of words spoken in a memorized manner, a slight movement of limbs in unison and then seconds of time pass into the many minutes and the beginning ot unknown futures. Smiles, familiar faces to embrace and remember. Tears crawl down your face while you think, Enjoyed the time I spent with you, your friendship and your compam. Goodbyes fade. Keep in touch .... Graduation 35 H H is for Hallslides and Halloween. First floor Kenan is known for their hallslides. Every now and then the girls throw down some suds and splash a little water for some instant fun! H is also for Halloween. We had a Halloween dance this year, awarded the creatures with the best costumes, and then headed on down to Chick ' s for a Halloween party with the locals. A lot of strange ghouls walked around Louisburg that night. 1 36 Hallslides Halloween 37 I is for Ignorance is Bliss . When sleeping in class is more frequent than sleeping in bed, it seems that since you have to stay up all night studying ignorance would be blissful. Karate 43 NORTH CAROLINA ' S BEST KEPT SECRET! Louisburg is the coeducational ju- nior college of the North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church. As a junior college it has served primarily three types of stu- dents: those who seek a solid aca- demic foundation in order to transfer to a four-year college; those who seek to bridge the gap between high school and a large institution by at- tending a junior college capable of giving them personal attention; and those who plan terminal work, pri- marily in the field of business. Louis- burg College is located in Louisburg, the county seat of Franklin County, in eastern North Carolina. The College is situated on the highest point of land in the town, and its buildings com- mand a fine view of the surrounding country and the valley of the Tar River. 44 Lou-U SITE PLAN - ■—.. r i OOt SBTJRO IK X LAW COLLEGE ACAtftpf f CI A «C HI TIC V IP lEIol u A fund drive called the Third Century C ampaign has been introduced by the Board of Trustees. Lou-U 45 One place in the Louisburg area has certainly proved to be a haven for Lou-Uers: Laurel Mill. Everyone at Louisburg makes a trip to Laurel Mill, sooner or later. This is the ultimate sun-bathing spot, because when you get hot, the icy water of the mill pond is waiting for you. It seems that the more daring get in first (don ' t forget the sign on the Mill wall that says, Please Don ' t Kill the Snakes ). Yes, Laurel Mill is a lovely place for stu- dents to go, or anybody for that matter. We only hope that the Mill will be preserved for future generations so everyone will be able to enjoy it. During the May Day Dance this year, Gigi Sugg was crowned May Queen by las t year ' s Homecoming Queen, Belinda Edwards. If not, you ' re probably accustomed to the name of Chick ' s. Yes, Chick ' s is the place to be on Thursday nights. On your left, Louisburg College students and the Franklin County locals line the bar and regard you with interest as you enter. On your right, you notice students crammed into booths and perched on tabletops, and you try to squeeze by. In the middle lies the infamous Chick ' s dance floor and the even more notorious jukebox. A solitary couple shags to the beat of beach music and you watch with some others for awhile, and then drift on. At the back of the room stand the pool tables and pinball machines. These apparatuses are in high de- mand, and people wait patiently on the sidelines for their turn at the green felt or red plastic buttons. All around you are people, people, and more people. Suddenly, you feel as if you belong in this smoke-filled place, and the feeling ' s good. For some reason, Chick ' s has a special charisma, a special charm. It ' s a special meeting place for special people. 50 Night Life ? Nighl Life 51 52 Ori ginality SS: FRAN KLIN r ( ) is lor originality . . . Remember the gu s trying to keep their Florida tans on the roof of Hillman in 60 degree weather? How about the bunch of girls who went l -wheeling in the snow, zig-zagging through the trees in front of Hillman? If you ' re looking for originality at Lou-l I, |ust turn around. You won ' t have to look far. Originalih jj HONK! SCREECH! SMASH! EXPLETIVE DELETED! These are familiar sounds at Louisburg College. And they will probably continue to invade our tender eardrums until the parking facilities are increased. (Gosh, I ' m sorry, Dr. Norris, I really didn ' t know that this space with Pres- ident painted on it was your parking space!) The ex- cuses go on and so do the parking violation tickets. Per- haps the patrons, in their quest for the new classroom buildings, can provide for a little more parking space. But, until then, beware of an elderly man in a trench coat and Irish walking cap with a pencil and pad in his hand. 54 Parking Problems QoIvwfa, Saturday, October 29, 1979, was .1 very special day tor some people. The Preppies! The Preppies are an elite group of people at Louisburg College. They hang around together eat to- gether and wear clothes together. They are most noted for their Izod shirts, socks, sweaters, ribbon-watch bands, wool skirts penny-loafers, and country club hats. (The preppies at Lou-U are definitely the utmost in refinement.) It ' s not too hard to become a Preppie. That is, if you want to be- come one. All you will need is an add-a-bead necklace, argyle socks, bright multi-colored ribbons for your hair, and a smile. You see, the Preppies are a happy bunch of people, and they try to make other people happy, too. So, if you ' re down and out, run over to your local designer prep shop, and spend your life savings on Pre- ppie clothes. You ' ll fit in and be happy with these people. (But you ' ll also be broke!) 56 Preppies Preppies 57 Photographers suffer long darkroom hours. They make the world spin with the shots they take. Behind every well organized, smoothly op- erating enterprise there must be hours of work, preparation, and uncalculable amounts of expended energy. Without our Board of Trustees the school would certainly be a fail- ure. In their quest for the Third Century Cam- paign the Board has contributed a million dollars altogether. With their plans for an ex- panded and modern campus, the Board gives us a feeling of pride in knowing that Louisburg College will remain the fine institution of learning that it has always been; all because of their efforts. For their kindness, the under- standing, the sound judgment, the imparting of knowledge and the endless services we say Thank You. In deep humility and in acknowledgement of your many efforts to our development, we proudly dedicate this yearbook to you, our Board of Trustees. Dedicati on 83 Sophomores Cecil Craig Allen Dean A. Remember the strains of Van Halen coming from Hillman on a spring afternoonl A highlight ol this war was llic dy- nainic performance of Mike C ross when he (amc |0 Lou-U one No- vember night. We ' ll long remember his song about Louisburg ttiimen. We were also entertained this year by Razor ' s acid rock. Their hard ro k electrified everyone in the Jordan Student Center. Everyone not down with the program. |.D. Ki« k came to Hillman ' s basemen! and en- tertained us at the beginning of the school year. It was a welcome diver- sion to our first few weeks of classes. Rock ' n ' roll does live on . . . at Louisburg College. Rock ' n ' Roll113 We had a lot of snow this year. Twice. The second time classes were cancelled for two days which gave everyone who had gone home for the weekend a long vacation. A few of us were snowed in at school, but that was okay. The few with four wheel drive trucks really had fun. 114 Snow I HA Snow 115 Volleyball Sheilah Cotten, Coach 116 Volleyball Volleyball 117 118 Volleybal Volleyball 119 Men ' s Basketball |. It is designed to offer a variety of challenging and enjoyable activities to every member of the student body. There are vigorous team sports such as football, basketball, and Softball; and competitive individual events such as table tennis and pool tournaments. Most Lou- 136 Sports U students enjoy involvement in these planned, supervised physical activities and find them to be an important part of their college life. The rivalry between teams is quite apparent, but in a friendly way. So, you get to unbottle anxieties plus build up your body at the same time. It really makes no differen e whether one plays, referees, keeps records, or organizes teams; the key is involvement. Sports S7 138 Ts h rts T T is for T-shirts. The great American way to ad- vertise slogans, personal viewpoints, and ways of life. As for T-shirts, it ' s not what ' s in them thats important, but what ' s on them. In competition with T-shirters are the shirtless. The decision is yours. This year was one of changing times. To borrow a phrase from Dickens, It was the besl of times, it was the worst of times . . . Sure we had a lot of good times at Lou-U, but around us the world was changing; the energy crisis was closing in on us, American diplomats were being held in Iran, trouble was brewing in Afghanistan, and lifestyle changes were taking place. Rumors proposing a draft hit home with everyone. We don ' t know what the future will hold, but at least we ' ll know that Lou-U prepared us for it. T-shirts 139 u U is for the little unexpected things that happen on a college campus. Like seeing someone traveling down the street on a skateboard while doing a hand- stand, no gas to get home for the weekend on, a car bash beside the student center with your favorite professor ' s name just waiting to be sledgehammered and seeing people blowing bubbles in front of AC Building while graduation exercises are going on in- side. One of the biggest surprises to get at Lou-U is to have a visit from one of the deans, your dorm coun- selor or the security guards at 3 in the morning. 140 The Unexpected V Sooner or later, everyone has to deal with the dreaded vending ma- ( tunc. This involves a lot of heart- break. Especially the mornings when you run down to get a cold drink to find the machine-front laden with notes saying, Liza in 208 lost 50 cents! etc. So you try it anyway and lose all your change. You know, those cafeteria dinners have a lot to do with everyone racing to the vending ma- chines for those last few bags of sour cream and onion potato chips. Vending Machines 141 w W is for Weekends at Lou-U. Each of us gets stranded at Lou-U for the weekend ev- ery once in a while. Sleeping late is a wel- come relef from the screaming-alarm mornings of week days. You find that one or two of your friends are in the same boat, and you sit around and wonder what to do. Hey, maybe we could find a ride to Hill- sborough Street tonight, or Do you know anyone going down t o EC tomorrow? . 142 Weekends at Lou-U One of the last resorts is to u downtown t the loi.il watering hole and mingle with the loi als who come up lor the weekend Weekends at Lou-U are .1 not easil torgot- ten experien e. Weekends at Lou-U 143 144 WQLC-64 How many people could accepl the responsibility ol being an in- ( oming college In •slim. in, hold down .1 weekend job, and organize .1 radio station from si rat h? ()nl one, ( harles Layno, and none other than the layno I harles took the initiative io organize . station by posting no- tices tor all persons interested in broadcasting to contact him. In time he got a number ol favorable re- sponses, and went to Dean Eller, who advised him ol the measures to he taken before the school could recog- nize the organization. This organiza- tion is known as the Future Broad- caster ' s Association. Since there has not been a station on campus since 1965, musical tastes have evolved, and the local stations cannot cater to a small group; Layno recognized the need for an updated radio program. The station, to be known by the let- ters WQLC, operates at 640 kilohertz, or (S4 on your AM dial. After many generous equipment donations, and a lot of hard work, the radio station got off to a successful start. The WQLC broadcasters are Mike Ivey, Charles Layno, Brad Woodard, Brad Ivey, John LeMay, and Denise Briggs. The Q64 ' s theme song is Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. Also, Another Brick in the Wall has special meaning to them, since it reminds them of the troubles they faced while getting the station together. They started with no money and equipment; they were di- vided and alone. Now they are a tightly knit, self-supporting group working toward a common dream ' s end. We take our hats off to you, Layno. (Excerpted from a colums article by Stuart Parrish.) Another one of life ' s little pleasures for the Louis- burg student is to take a walk down- town. In the spring, the oak covered sidewalks are a beauty to behold in front of the gorgeous old houses. Many Lou-Uers go downtown for shopping, or browsing, or just for the walk; but they all find a charming little center of the community only a few blocks from the college. A Walk Downtown 145 146 X-traordinary X X is for X-traordinary. The greatest feeling in the world is to know you ' ve passed all of your courses (even Logic) and are eligible for graduation. A feeling of relief eclipses you. To finally be able to say, I did it. After all the work, the trials and tribulations, and happiness and sadness; to finally be able to say that you are an alumni of good ole Lou-U is a happy moment indeed. After finally making it through, sophomores really are X-traordinary people. X-traordinary 147 Y Y is for Y ' all. When the kids from north of the Ma- son Dixon line finally slip and say y ' all, they know that they really do fit in with the slow, southern living of Louisburg. See y ' all later, y ' all come back, you hear! 148 Y ' all Come Back Y ' all Come B.i. k 149 Z is for the Zoo. You might be thinking of the Frank- lin II Zoo, but there is another Zoo on campus, and that one is the Oak staff. The members include Wanda Wyatt, Randy Sandlin, Margaret Best, Sara Hester, Johnny Holton, Julie Hinnant, Editor, and Julie Moore. This Zoo has definitely got everyone beat on zaniness. I ' m sure the staff will remember our two dinners dur- ing the year; one featuring raw barbequed chicken and the other, green African chicken at the home of our leader, Zappa. Yes, many different incidents hap- pen along the way of making a yearbook, and the staff hopes that it has captured this year of 1980 as best as possible. z Z is also for Zilch. We come to a time when everyone is all zilched- out, zeroed-out, and ready for summer. As a sophomore, I can look back and say that its been lots of fun; but I really am going to miss old Lou-U, my friends I made here, my dorm room and just about ev- erything else at Louis- burg. Time to pack up and move on to other things and find your place in the sun. From the time we were unexperienced freshmen with wide eyes and bewil- dered looks to when me meta- morphisized into confident, omnipo- tent sophomores. Its all the little things that will stick to the backside of our minds that we ' ll ultimately re- member and cherish. From sun-bath- ing on Drake Beach to the daily drudgery of classes, from Thursday nights spent at Chicks to the cram- ming of all-nighters, from the beasties to monkeying-around; they all blend into a pleasant memory of the times spent at Lou-U. Farewell to the youth we spent together. We now look for- ward to new vistas and horizons in our future. -The Oak Staff 168 From A to Z
