When fhe school was criricized as being ulfra-arisiocrafic, Lafin and Greek were femporarily removed from fhe curriculum. The Girls' Scholarship Sociefy was founded in S'99 by ihe Senior Aye girls. Those inferesled made coniribufions 'ro aid members in financing a college educafion. Also, fhe girls furnished some of iheir own funds - by membership dues and by sales held ai school. In l9l2 fhe iunior college was formed as pari of 'rhe high school for sfudenfs who wished 'ro begin fheir college sfudies ai' home, and for rhose who were nof inieresfed in furfher iraining ai a universiiy. The oldesf of 'rhe school's music organizaiions, 'lhe Boys' Glee Club, was formed in I887. A few years laier 'rhe Girls' Glee Club came info exisfence. In l905 rhe orchesfra was begun by srudenfs. Miss Verna Blyihe was for many years fhe head of Rorne's music deparfmeniz under her leadership +he music organizafions in exisience improved and increased, and more were added. They sfaged an aihlefic performance in Hazard's Pavilion, where ihe Phil- harmonic Audiforium is now si+uared, and by fhe fime ihey had raised 5500, rhe cify council appropriaied fhe same amounf fo fhe fund. The Board of Educaiion promised fo coniribuie a sum equal fo fheirs, so ihe boys increased fhe fund ro S2,000. In l907 'rhe Science building, wifh new equipmeni, was builf on rhe norrh side of fhe school. The audiforium, in I909, enabled sfudenrs 'ro lisfen +o speakers convenienfly.
