Some like Brethren, Whittier and Valley said it could not be done but in the end were proven wrong. We did do it, a second year team, the 1979-80 season was our first in CIF. But even though it being the first year, the Baptist team captured a playoff spot with a 7- 4-1 league record, second only to undefeated Ontario Christian. To say the least, LAB Soccer had a successful season. A team that was over- whelmed with talent. A high-spirited team whose goal was to make soccer a sport to last at Baptist. A team whose spiritual attitude led them to a successful season. Varsity Soccer finished with an 11-5-3 season and had seven players on the all Olympic' League team. LAB had three first team selections, they were Eric Anderson, Dave Brown, and Greg Turner. The four second team all-league selections included, Cary Farajian, Tim Damato, Andy Blakely and Freshman, Hector Raya. The team is losing a total of three starting seniors and is guaranteed another successful season next year. 76 X VARSITY SOCCER IN MEMORY OF TODD STEVENS

Led by Chris Monroe, LAB Cross Coun- try finished second in Olympic league. Chris finished first in every dual team meet and first in league finals. Chris cap- tured the 1979-80 Most Valuable Runner as he had done the previous year. A first place finish at the Morro Bay Invitational and a fourth place finish in CIF Prelimi- naries gave Chris the chance to run in CIF finals, but a sprained ankle spoiled his chances. Strong finishes by Ralph Salisbury and Mike Dorais always got the clutch points for the LAB victories. Greg Njoes, Rocky Washington, Paul Sherrill and Ken Aram always finished in the top half in their meets. For instance, in the Ontario Chris- tian meet, all of the LAB runners finished ahead of all but one of the Ontario Chris- tian runners. The Iunior Varsity Cross Country team also finished second in league. Promising runners for next year include Dean Russu and Bruce Turner. Dean and Bruce, just freshman, finished first and sixth in league finals. Greg Turner and Mike Domke who are also dedicated athletes who finshed strong in league finals will be assets to the team in their Senior year. Some memorable experiences the team shared this year included the time when Todd Harper, Bill Markham, and Gunther Terampe took the wrong route at Griffith Park and ended up a distance from their destination. They received a ride from a willing motorist back to their finish line. Other memorable experiences were water fights at Morro Bay and the constant excitement of running 1320's for practice. But all their hard work paid off and LAB had a Cross Country team to be proud of. 1. 1980 Cross Country: Hanna Edmondson, Greg Njoes, Rocky Washington, Mike Dorais, Chris Mon- roe, Greg Turner, Ken Aram, Coach Gomez.
