Var ity 1 'l'he1979-80 Varsity Baseball Team is not a subject to be taken lightly. The team consists of veterans of Baptist Baseball and a fcw newcomers at the same time. This season should take the team all the way to playoffs with pitching from the fantastic three, Mark Goens, Todd Beal and Pat Fields. Runs will be scored with ease when you have power hitters like Mike Romero, Bob Travis and Scott Ardavanis. Under the coaching of Mr. Lewis, Mr. Days, and Mr. Neville. This team will be very successful. Among the rookies on this team are Matt MacArthur and Scott Miller. Both players are completely capable of handling the varsity status Scott plays third while Matt plays a strong defensive second baseman. And then of course, there is the hitting. With the switch-hit- ting ability of Scott Ardavanis he can show his power to all fields. Designated hitter Bob Travis shows his consistency by putting the team on the scoreboard. The clean-up.hitters do just that, clean-up. Ion Gerlach and Mike Romero pull their resources together to get the runs. Junior Var ily D. The 1979-80 IV Baseball team had yet another impressive season. The team had a reputation to keep up that was sup- plied by the three previous Iunior Varsity teams. After three straight league championships. Coach Phill Iennings had his work cut out for him. Of the thirty players trying out, Bill Days and Coach Iennings could pick only sixteen of the most talented to represent our school. john Oatey and Chuck Heskett highlighted the pitching skills and any rare ball hit to the outfield was quickly inhaled by Ioe Koh, Ion Scott, or Dave Brown. The shortstop position was mastered brillantly by Rod Shackelford who contributed much more than could have been expected of him. Pete Cerlach provided both offensive and defensive strength. Both at the plate with a bat and on second base with a glove, Cerlach showed his talent.
