ll 1 1 1 i l 1 asketbczll The 1979-80 Basketball team started off with 14 players. After football season, due to the'unfortunate injury of Mike Buchanon, the number was reduced to 13 for the start of the season. The team fired up for the tradi- tional alumni game and won 66-55. Next came Fillmore and another win. Bad luck struck again when the team lost Bill Chollman because of his moving away. Coach Neville entered his team in the Calabasas tourna- ment and was victorious over St. Monica in the first round. The Knights, after two more losses, finished fourth. Scott Ardavanis was named to the All-Tournament team. The highly touted Fillmore tournament brought on a tough Nordhoff team, but another first round win. Another win over Fill- more and Neville's team was into the final. Notre Dame of Riverside, our next opponent, emerged victorious in an exciting 80-65 game. Ardavanis and Pat Fields were named to the All-tournament team. A loss to Bell-Ieff finished the pre-season and the Knights had a 5-4 record. Tragedy struck as Lorne Mattner broke his collarbone and the team was at 11. A loss and a win put the team in the middle of the Olympic League Pack. Four more losses came and the Knights' outlook on playoffs dim- med. An exciting win at Ontario broke the streak, but another streak of three games soon followed. Illness to Todd Beal brought the roster down to 10. The highlight of the season followed when the Knights played play- off-bound Avalon in a non-league game. The game ended with our team winning 107-71. Two losses at the end of the season left a record of 9 and 13. Scott Ardavanis and Pat Fields were selected as All-Olympic League performers. Throughout the year every ball player helped in some way. Other standout performers included Dave Schuler, Ion Gerlach, Todd Fisaier, Mark Gordon, Ion Scott, Iohn Allen, Curt Ganther and Mike Os orne. an i 3. 1. Fish at the line. 2. Basketball 43- Y I 6 y ul ii A QL iw f E, 'af ffhlvrrf ,anon -mv- W .0 51111 ff . , .. .... . 7? -Ni ' Btu After 2 years of coaching I.V. Basketball, coach Ioe Gomez led his team to their second championship. Yes, Coach Gomez is amazing, but he could not have done it without players like Ion Haar, Chris Monroe, Ion Oatey, Tim Ander- son and Leonard Iones. Along with other outstanding con- tributors like Mike Ellensohn and Mike Domke, the Knights couldn't help winning. Ion I-laar led the I.V.'s from his forward position, in scoring and rebounding and Mike Ellensohn did a superb job at the guard position utilizing his fine shooting touch. Leonard Iones, alias Fleetfoot Iones, did an excellent job of dribble breaking presses and making moves Walter Davis would be proud of. Freshman Ion Oatey also did an unbelievably consistent job of rebounding and shooting. Look out Lutheran and Brethren, Mr. Oatey has three years left. Last, but certainly not least is swingman Chris Monroe. Chris exhibited amaz- ing hustle, this, blended with fine shooting and rebounding made Chris the best sixth man in the league. But, no team would be complete with the men who come off the bench. Players such as Matt MacArthur, Todd Brooks, Pete Cerlach, filled their most difficult job as any champion- ship players would. With most of this I.V. team advancing to Varsity we hould have a good Varisty squad in years to come. Good luck guys. I. V. BASKFTBALL I 65
