LORAS COLLEGE l to GEORGE MEANY Outstanding American of 1970 ' THE IOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY AWARD john Fitzgerald Kennedy exemplified the qualities most sacred and dear to Americans, true faith in God and in the Constitution of the United States of America. In the spirit of our departed President who lives after death as an ideal of the principles of the founding fathers of our country that all men are created equal and possessed of certain inalienable rights, Loras College has established this annual award to an Outstanding American who walks in the footsteps of john' Fitzgerald Kennedy. Such an American is George Meany. A native of New York City, George Meany has spent a lifetime of service to the trade union movement. Forced by family financial circumstances to abandon his formal education while still in high school, he followed his father's trade and received his journeyman plumber's certificate at the age of 21. His leadership qualities were quick to emerge. He was elected business agent of his local in 19225 served as President of the New York State Federation of Labor from 1934-395 was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of Labor in 1940 and held that office until his election as President of the organization in 1952. He labored assiduously for the reunion of the AFL and CIO and when the merger was effected became the first President of the AFL-CIO, a post which he still holds. Mr. Meany's interests and contributions are in no way confined to trade unionism. He has served on several Presidential Advisory Commissions, dealing with both domestic and interna- tional affairs, and served two terms as a Delegate to the General Assembly of the United Nations. In addition to his contribution toward healing the divisions within the trade union move- ment, he was instrumental in establishing an Ethical Practices Committee within the AFL-CIO to improve both the substance and the image of the labor movement. A recognized authority on national economic issues, social legislation and international affairs, George Meany pioneered in moves to attain industrial peace and led in the fight for civil rights. In all this-he took the view point that what is best for the nation as a whole is best for its wage-earners. Therefore, Loras College presents the john Fitzgerald Kennedy Award to this Outstanding American of 1970. Witness the seal of Loras attested by the signature of its President this eighteenth day of October, 1970. justin A. Driscoll President
