Varsity Debate Teams 6405 The Varsity speech team has enjoyed another exciting and victorious season ot debating, extempore speaking, oration and other phases ot speech. The Varsity Debate Squads started the season in Dec. 1954 by attending the tournament at St. Joseph's High School. For tho next seven weeks they attended tourna- ments in Port Clinton, Ravenna, Canton, Cleveland, Hart- well, ancl Massillon and concluded by attending the district meet in Cleveland. All in all the Varsity A squad won 3l out ot 42 debates. The Varsity B squad brought home a trophy from Port Clinton and went on to a tri- umphant season. In the individual events held, the team brought home a trophy from the tournament at Cathedral Latin. Members ot the A debate squad are Judy Dinn and Bob Nagy, Attirmative, Yanula Pappas and Dick DeTillio Negative. This year the orchestra held its ovvn annual concert. Some members played in a ioint con- cert vvith the choirs for the Christmas program and others in the operetta orchestra. The outstanding activities of this club are a varsity football dance, and supervision of the home crown' ing of the queen at a football game. Following a loss to Findlay The Steelers embarked on a seven game streak which included an 85 point performance against Canton Lehman. lt was a new Steeler single game mark. The local unit of School Electives is the Lorain Board of Education. Their duties are as follows: the general managing and control ot the Lorain Public School System, adopting budgets, receiving money from district and local taxes and state appropriation. They pay all the bills and salaries and are responsible forthe erection and repair ot buildings. Adopting the courses of study and selecting textbooks is another duty ot the Board. Some of Mr. Holder's duties here at school are conferring with teachers and students on their many problems, scheduling of all extra-curricular activities and attending outside confer- ences with other educators.
