Industrial Arts Department The first step in America toward industrial training as a part of the public school system was made about 1870 when mnual training was introduced into many high schools. Manual training had no relationship to voca- tional education, as it was merely an element of culture and general efficiency. Today industrial arts has be- come an important phase of education in high school, with large modern, Well-equipped shops, and teachers especially prepared in this subject.

Slcetching each other is an enjoyable pastime of these students. However, oil painting is the most expressive method. It is capable of far richer effects, may be handled and applied in a mul- titude of ways, and can be easily worked over. During the past year, more elaborate and unusual scenery has been produced by this class for the production of the operetta and the school play.
