These souvenirs of War were grim reminders in times of peace. people become interesting in proportion as we can see them through the eyes,' of their own language. Spain, France, Germany . . . were remote from us geographically . . . but through their language we came to know Goethe . . . Cervantes . . . Hugo. These were people, too . . . We talked their language . . . read their lit- erature . . . sang their songs . . . and we understood. They were also in search of . . . the better life. TwentyfSeve11

SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT 'TwentyfSix Pupils in the World history class of Mr. W. A. Smith look to the maps to identify places and areas that made news today that was history tomorrow. ISTORY showed us the living past . . . Economics helped us to understand inflation . . . prices . . . scarcities . . . Civics ac- quainted us with the aspects of good government . . . and the real meaning of democracy. All of us realized the new importance of social science. We watched U. N. in its trials . . . We looked for gleams in the diplomatic darkness. We hoped for a lasting peace . . . lest this one be the last peace. Strikes . . . economic crises . . . diplomatic tensions . . . were signs of the times that made us think.

INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT 'I'we'ntyfEight Boys and girls used their hands as Well as their heads to make tables, book racks, and other articles of home furnishings. Could you do as Well? REATIVE living shows its best expression in some work of beauty. In the woodshop . . . in the machine shop . . . we learned to make the sketches . . . the drawings . . . the blue-print . . . take on proportion. Meaningless numbers and lines finally became chests and cabinets. We amazed ourselves . . . We saw the miracle of wood and metal refinished by stain and paint and varnish. In our own way . . . better things . . . for better living.
