Army Though the students of Longview High School this year have been active and co-operative in all phases of the war prograin, most credit goes to our former students who have answered the call to duty in a more concrete way. Eight of the graduates of Longview High School have given their lives that freedom might live. It is to those who have given their last full measure of devotion that the remaining students of Longview High School promise untiring support to the cause for which these boys have given their lives and earnestly resolve that 'these shall not have died in vain. COACH CO-CAPTAINS M A N A G E R S 'P. E. Shotwell Blakely and Johnson jimmy Perkins Wayne Tutt 'e ff 2.2.43 Nacogdoches, in the first game of the season, proved to be a good opener for the Lobos. The Lobos were on top by a count of 15-0. This game took place at the Lobo Stadium on September 17. The team, as a whole, looked pretty good. Touchdowns were made on short jaunts through the end and tackle. Raney, guard, blocked a punt for the remaining 2 points. Henderson, who beat Kilgore this year, had Longview on the breezy side. They were supposed to have a passing team that couldn't be stopped. They defeated Kilgore, 14-7, but came to Longview only to go back with the wrong end of the score. Longview took its second game 32-6. Blakely and Dunaway scored on runs, and a pass from Blakely to Rowland was good for another touchdown. Line blocking showed great improvement along with everything else. Pass protection couldn't be beat. Longview's line had no trouble stopping all it met, and it improved with every game. Line standouts were Grigg, Richard- son, Raney, and Thomas. . Mineola, a non-conference game, was played here September 28. This was the third game of the season, and there was improvement in the blocking of the team. A touchdown was made in the first few min- utes of the game, and two more were added before the half. In the third quarter, the second string made a good showing, and every squadman played before the end of the game. The final score was 53-3. Mineola made its only score in the fourth quarter by a iield goal. ,Mfr ' P ATTAWAY, Center AYCOCK, Back BIVINS, Back BLAKELY, Back BOYLAND, End I5 if fi BROWN, End COGHLAN, Back DILL, Back if -- .- - .,,..f-,, sfcj ftwbyf, i J ,, ' .ff 'A---h-J GOODING, Guard x DUN.-UV,-XY, Back G.-XXINION, End Athens was our first conference game. It was played here, October l, and it was the fourth game of the season. Athens had its best team in several years, but that night it just was not clicking. The most outstand- ing play was when Blakely carried a punt from his own live-yard line to pay dirt. Grigg was the outstanding man on defense, with johnson back- ing up the line. The final score was 40-0 for the Lobos. The Lobos had little trouble running over Texarkana to the score of 45-0. At times the Tigers stiffened, but the fine line play of the Lobos kept the Tigers from ever getting started. At times the Lobo line slipped up on blocking, but on the whole looked good. Blakely and Dunaway led the offense, while Grigg was outstanding on the defense. The Lobos came into the Kilgore game undefeated and were large favorites over Kilgore. The Lobos won 20-0, but Kilgore put up a hard fight. This was Longview's biggest game, and a win was very gratifying. The game was marked with clean playing, with only five penalties dur- ing the game. The Lobos scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, with Blakely going over for both of them. Kilgore pushed the Lobos hard, but cou1dn't score. Blakely scored again in the fourth quarter, on a 24-yard jaunt through the entire Kilgore team. The Lobos had little trouble running up a 47-0 score over jackson- ville. The regular line-up started the game except for XVright johnson who was sick with the Hu. Blakely, Dunaway, Aycock, Bivins, and Dill all carried the mail, while Raney, Richardson, Boyland, and Hibben paved the way in the line. This game was played October 29. . X as 8 MCGAW, Guard POE, End November 11 was a sad day for the Lobos. They went on the field somewhat overconfident because the week before Tyler was defeated by Henderson, whom the Lobos had defeated 32-6. The Lobos kicked the ball to Tyler at the beginning of the game and the YVolves held the Lions deep in their own territory. The Lions forced the Wolves back to their own goal. When the Lobos started to kick out, the kick was blocked and the Lions rang up two points. lfVhen the gun was fired, the Lobos had been greatly out-played, and the score was 2-0. The only real Lobo threat was made when the Wolves returned a Lion punt to the Lion twenty. The Lobos left the field a sick team, but intending to redeem themselves when they met the fast Marshall team. The Marshall Mavericks were large favorites over the Lobos, but they didn't run over the Green and VVhite. Marshall's first score came in the first quarter on a pass from Tittle to Gillory. Early in the third quarter, Marshall scored again on a quick end sweep, but the Lobos finally found themselves and scored a quick touchdown. It looked as though they would score again, but a Marshall back intercepted one of Blakely's passes to end the threat and win the ball game. The final score was Marshall 13, Longview 6. ' The Lobos were still favored over the Gladewater Bears, despite their two defeats. Wright johnson, Lobo center, intercepted a Bear pass in the first minute of the game and scored. The first string ran up four quick touchdowns, and let the second string take over. Raney, Lobo guardj broke his ankle in the First quarter and couldn't finish the game. This was the last game for many of the Lobos, and a good way to end a good season. W- . f x A x t r I ., V. . .- r 1 -e.'S1,- -i 55, . L.-.-Qi 5' . ld X 4 uso Q -.. L. . I --VL Q are '7zfs.,.
