Price 1904-1969 Genius is nothing more than knowing the use of tools, but there must be tools for it to use. By Samuel Johnson. Residents of Longmont will not forget the legacy of the late Mayor Ralph Price. He had the im- agination and foresight which insure the continued prosperity of the city during years to come. Today, the construction of the Button Rock Dam and the planned facilities represent community progress for a number of years. These were Mayor Price's tools for a better city and it is this type of progress and thinking which Mayor Price's administration built for the future. With all these contributions involved, the staff dedicates the 1970 TROJAN to Mayor Ralph R, Price. 'Twp-fx ,f,'fN'w-- ' craig W -K p 4... ,xfvffg xy' Mr. Price plans for the future. Translated by Archie Johnstone I5 . S t..JL.JlXIlCIJl53C.:'5 lQ7I ICIJFZE' A class united toward the ac- complishment of greater goals was the theme of our class this year. An outstanding effigy at Homecoming, a food drive for needy families at Christmas, Girl's Week and the Junior-Senior Prom were some of the major accom- plishments of our class this year. Dean Lehman 'We lead, others follow ' was the motto chosen by the junior class during their sophomore year. It was not chosen because it sounded good, but because it was true. Ted Spallinger Education is a basic factor in our lives. Also, there is respon- sibility. Being juniors we have experienced both. Therefore as seniors we can further our educa- tion and responsibility. Sherrie Peppler As historian, I found that the junior class have had many lead- ers in sports, extra curricular ac- tivities and in scholastic, achieve- ment. Educational Tour Making American history more significant and realistic sometimes falls short in the classroom. Each year a business-sponsored group of Longmont High School students explores colonial America, Washington D. C. , New York City, and Chicago with the aid of four chaperones. Tours not only centered around the old heritage but upon big city life too! Tak- ing thirty teenagers on a subway ride to Greenwich Village was a ig-l experience, ac- cording to Mr. Don Richardson. He said looks the group received, the sights seen, and the Electric Circus discotheque Qwhich was bombed the sunday after they lefty all added to this learning experience! Besides half of the high schoolers never having flown before, over that amount had not viewed slum conditions, the Bowery and Chinatown in New York City. Stu- dents felt seeing a completely different life style prepared them more for life after graduation. Other highlights in the cities mentioned were: the Russian Embassy, Arlington National Cemetery, Independence Hall, the Empire State Building, a tour of Manhat- tan, Radio City Music Hall, the White House, and the U.S. Capitol. To share an experience with others, that's what high school signifies. Laugh- ing, dancing, loving - these are all a part of the sharing that L.H.S. students enjoy during the year. As under- classmen the stu- dents are com- pletely uninhib- ited. Interests deviate from ' body surfing in a river to practic- ing yoga in P.E. Occasionally motivated they attend a class. Stddying can nat- urally tire an per- son, so a short cat- nap is thc recommended cure for tired minds and bodies f , UNDERCLASSME Kg' 48 , ' L , 131159 us.. . ' fa f 4 1- M - . Student body officers form a cabinet that meets regularly and plan the agenda and course of ac- tion of the Senate. Long hours are spent in the careful planning of the school year activities. During the summer and school year, these officers attend several Northern Conference student council meetings. These meet- ings provide ideas to spearhead enthusiasm in school activities. Also these meetings provide ideas to help the officers plan new strategies to overcome problems. These gatherings make it possible to compare L. H. S. with other fellow conference school. H. S. , carries a great amount of responsibility. That responsibility is recognizing the attitudes, ideas, and criticisms of the student body. To run smoothly a school must have a satisfied student body. This year senate worked very hard with the administration and the school board for the revision of the dress code. Another senate activity worthy of recognition was the composing of two peti- tions, signed by the majority of student body. One is for the release of information concerning United States war prisoners in Hanoi. The other petition was sent to Colorado state legislators and federal legislators urging action on air pollution. Both of these petitions were included with petitions from all students in the Nonh- ern Conference. Senate also sponsors the Helping Hand Carnival, which occurs every spring. Over one -thousand dollars is raised for charity. In addition, senate sponsors sophomore cheerleaders. .5 4485 . - v ' ' if 43 12511 f ,I 1, N, , Y ,M ffff wx W df lf ',,, nf ff A nf L '4 G ,A ff A s v N11 Q' ll 1 sf -WH-ur an L' . Girls' Glce One-hundred musically-inclined girls brought together as a group make up girls glee. These girls each have an individual interest in music and lyrics which they express through singing. Along with hard hours of practice comes the satisfaction of being congratulated on their performances. This year the girls performed at the Christmas and Spring concerts which took place at the high school. Sophomore Choir Singing, of course, is an enjoyable part of every person's life. In Longmont High there are various musical groups. One of them is the sophomore choir. This group consists of seventy- five select boys and girls. Students are selected in the spring of their year as ninth graders. The choir's major concerts are at school assemblies. Con certs they performed in were the Christmas and National Hon- or Society assembly. 9 B Any boy interested in furthering his musical ability is given that oppor- tunity by participating in boys glee. Thirty- eight boys are involved in this G1 group. Along with singing, the boys are able to experiment with various ee beat instruments which help to express the mood of the music. ...rdf The band, under the direction of Mr. Browning, completed a highly successful year. At Colorado University Band Day, the group won superior awards in both march- ing and maneuvering. The band, which is divided into two groups, Blue and White Bands, received much public attention by giving various concerts, playing at the football and basketball games, and the as- semblies. Of all the activities they were honored by being asked to play at the Bronco Foot- ball Half- time Show - after much practice and patience, they were ready . . . but alas . . . it had to be cancelled due to dif- ficulty with the weather. But then again, the band came through like a happy- end- ing in a fairy tale: they were selected as the most outstanding Concert Band, and they played at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. 44' Longmont High School Band To represent L.H.S. in the field of music throughout the state. - Motto - President - Rick Henry Vice- President - Joyce Shambough Secretary- Treasurer - Debbie Been Sponsor - Mr. Gary Browning PERC US S IO N Dave Askey Kim Childs Mike Pedot SAXOPHONE Paul Johnson Art Hattle Steve Fincher Don Lewis Bill Prescott Rick Henry Mark Spencer STRINGS Randy Jones Glenn Baker TROMBONES Tom A nd erso n Lynn Rust R thm Aires 2932- that's the idea: not just the so- called o1d time music, but jazz. Second and third places were awarded to Jan Finicher and Joyce Shambaugh respectively. This year's All-State Orchestra members included: Cristi Castle, Nancy Kitley, Barbara Evans, Paul Johnston, Steve Finicher, and Joyce Shambough. A disaster has struck the Trojan yearbook staff. The staff will be temporarily out oforder as they have been placed behind bars. The crimes, all committed in the line of duty, are associated with everyday staff happenings: cameras overflashing, rattling papers, overflowing wastebaskets, not meeting deadlines, losing negatives, and pictures not turning out have all been held against the staff. Without the long hours of work necessary for the yearbook, there must be a crew to take over until the jail sentence is terminated. The temporary help must, however, watch out for such complications as broken typewriters, a noisy working atmosphere, many interruptions, overtime hours, opinion differ- ences, and feuds over materials being lost. ' However, with the help of Miss Susan Warp, part-time sheriff, also year- book advisor, the verdict will be not that guilty and the entire staff may re- turn to the outside world. Drama has been one of the most popu- lar courses in the history of this school. Drama was never a class till the move to the present high school, and now has been in existence for four years. It began with only two classes and now has been devel- oped into five. Three first year and two advanced. This is over 100 students en- rolled in drama each year. favorite hobbies. The costume department has grown up to 150 costumes. For the love of entertaining children Mrs. Stratman is given credit for the Children's Theatre. The first year starts the students out with the basic techniques and it gives them an experience in acting. They learn about the stage craft, and mainly about dra- ma in general. The second year of advanced classes take the tech- niques they have learned and de- velop them much further. They have more freedom and have the space and time to be more crea- tive with their art of acting. They are also exposed to good dramatic literature. What a grand opening for the commencement exercises for the senior class of 1969-'70, The realization of life is no stronger than at this time when the students find themselves in the position where they are put out on their own and must further themselves in the best possible way they as in- dividuals can find. Many reactions were wit- nessed as the seniors were seated for the final time as high school students in front of their parents, teachers, and friends. On the outside of each student there was a aura of relief, that they had completed their years in high school. Underneath, there was a great fear and curiosi- ty as to what would become of their lives now that they would be planning for themselves. Many destinations are in store for the students, all a complete new situation to be faced up to each and every day, each one a new vintage which the graduated seniors will tramp through in search of success. Anderson, P. Hagg, T. Nuss, fH. Finnell, absentj. As sophomores we enter high school to crawl through our first experiences of maturity. As juniors we take our first wobbly steps in leading our own lives and learning, from the seniors, to be leaders. And now as seniors we are mature enough to take the reins and teach the sophomores and juniors leadership for the years to come. Terry Nuss The first day at L. H. S. as a sopho- more, 1 looked forward to high school with mixed emotions. Now, as a sen- ior, I almost wish I had those times back again: yet I do feel I've been well prepared to meet the future. Greg Anderson The year 1970 has been the great- est year I've spent at Longmont High. The seniors of '70 have accomplished more than anyone expected. Good luck.
