It is he whom we wish to place upon our pinnacle. He is a man of gracious temperament and superb character. He is a master craftsman- a teacher. Because of the faithful service through many years in Longmont High School, we dedicate the 1941 Trojan to Otto Henkel. J .Q 'bfi' I' r O 5 X 1 , ff f Xxxix ' V Q u 4 X! It is largely through the Senate, the law-making body of repre- sentatives from each home room, that we exercise our rights of self-government. Chosen by their classmates, they are individuals upon whose shoulders the honor and standards of the school rest. Senators are not aged scholars representing the problems and ideas of the Faculty and School Board-they are young people voicing the opinions, com- plaints, and ideas of the five hundred Trojans who elected them. They bear po- sitions of honor and have successfully kept the name Trojan', unmarred. ,,,Q.,- ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVITIES 8,1 . 5 K' If X.. ' 1 1-xxx Ld! I ,A if If Il-.X I II, X' 1 Cheer Leaders ET'S give fifteen for the team. This the cheer leaders chanted at almost every ,frame through- out the year. All through our very successful football and basketball season they were present at the games keeping' high the spirits of the crowd and cheering the team on to victory. When the team was behind, they cheered the more, and event in defeat they had a ready smile for them. They went with the team to Grand Junction and won recofnition at the state basketball tournament in Denver. We owe our compliments to our cheer leaders for the fine school spirit we have. Let us give fifteen for our cheer leaders- Bridg'ie, Frannie, Squirt, and Don. Standing tleft to rightjz Don McKeown, Melvin McCoy. Kneeling: Mary Frances Armstrong, Clar- ice Archer. Debate NDER the question: Resolved, That the powers of the Federal Government should be increased, the members of the Longmont High School Debate squad have made a name for themselves. The squad, composed of twenty members, participated in 250 debates and competed against schools of Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Utah, Idaho and Colorado. The Longmont champion de- baters took first place in the state contest. Their success entitled them to participate in the national N. F. L. tournament at Lexington, Kentucky, in April-a thrilling climax to a most successful year of debate. The state champion debaters were Mary Alice Hitt and Lucy Lair Hartshorn. Bill Meyers, Kirby Kistler, Jack Bice and Harold Stevenson composed the team that brought home third place in the Rocky Mountain district. The band received second rating in marching in the parade, but received first as a concert band. The orchestra, said Alvin Edgar, band director at Iowa State University, gave me a real thrill. The Longmont orchestra out- shines many college orchestras. It also received a first division rating, or superior. The judges were l't'tOl'Q strict than usual, and less than half as many superior ratings were given this year. During the year the band played at all of the football games and at the state basket- ball tournament. The orchestra has played at practically all gatherings in the school auditorium. Three cheers for Mr. Spicer and our band and orchestra. Those receiving high ratings in solo and ensemble events were Keith Lapee, superior in sousaphone solo, Harold Stevenson, superior in clarinet solog Duane Botts, superior in bass clarinet, second in pianog La Monte Greenly and Annette Strong 1'eceived seconds in solo work, and Walter Ehrlich, third: Sally Jo English received second in pianog Gerald Henry, third in clarinet, Miriam Brown from Junior High, entered in the senior high group and received second in French horn. The cla1'inet quartet rated superior. The members were Harold Steven- son, Lucy Lair Hartshorn. Don Baker and Ed Root. The string quartet, composed of Patty Slay, Kathleen Tordoff, Arleen Tordoff and Rosalie Eggleston, rated in division two, or excellent. The brass sextet rated superior. It was composed of LaMonte Greenly, Eugene VVatkins, Jack Pedi- go, Keith Lapee, Jack Bice, Amos Ownbey. Entries from Junior High were Kenneth Runberg, receiving first in violin, Marilyn Cain, second in violin, Harleigh Howerton, second in clarinet, Bobby Troxell, second in clarinetg Dar- lene Baehr, first in French horn, Jerry Kiser, second in trumpetg Leland Smith, first in bari- tone horn, Kay Kennedy, second in solo cornet. Under Miss Margie Mustard's skillful and experienced leadership, these songsters put their hearts into their renditions and led their audiences into the magic land of melody. One of their highest achievements was participating in the annual Music Contest at Boulder, May 2. They sang in the massed chorus group of six hundred voices at the Band and Orchestra Spring Concert at Boulder in May. No ratings were given participants, but helpful criticism was offered. To say the least, it was inspirational to be there. In November representatives from Girls' Glec and Choir went to the vocal clinic in Greeley and worked for three days under the direction of Max Krone of the Music Department of the University of Southern California. The last day the big chorus from all of Colorado-about five hundred-gave a concert on Sunday afternoon. It was certainly an honor to be in it. The musical background they created at the Commencement and Baccalaureate services added much to these programs. The blue and white clad choir made modern and old songs Girls' Glee NE of the busiest and most successful organizations in Longmont High this year was the Girls' Glee club. Under the able direction of Miss Mustard, this choral society has con- tinued to keep the good reputation of the school. The Glee Club was received enthusiasti- cally by the audiences throughout the year. They helped in the production of the operetta, Carn1cIita, which surpassed all previous musical productions. They also took part in the spring festival at Boulder and attended the music clinic in Greeley last fall. Such a group is certainly a credit to its community and school. live with new beauty. Journalism NCE again the TrojaneWs has become a paying proposition. This year's journalism classes have, under the capable direction of Miss Boyce, worked hard to make a good paper. The journalism class is only a semester subject, so with a few exceptions, the class which took over in January was a very green one. Miss Boyce and the entire journalism staff deserves much credit for the fine work that they have done. National Honor Society -qv. This year w'as no exception. The students whose pictures are in the above group are a few of the most outstanding ones in the classes of 1940-41. We did not have the usual Commercial Contest this year, but with money earned by the students, gold pins were pur- chased and were awarded to students for high accomplish- ments. This made an individual contest throughout the year in which every student could participate. International Relations NTERNATIONAL Relations Club has come to be recognized this year as a most active and worthwhile club. Under the aid and guidance of their sponsor, Mr. S. Clay Coy, the Trojans successfully played host to the ninth annual International Relations Conference, February 22. The Long- mont students took particular pride in the fact that Longmont was host to that first conference in 1933 when the clubs of this area banded together to form the permanent organization of this region. L. H. S. was greatly honored this year in having two of its members hold important Regional offices-Lawrence Bogott, president, and Gloria Williams. secretary-treasurer. The purpose of this organization is to encourage fellowship among schools. This year the conference was given in the form of an Inter- American Conference with each member acting as a representative from some certain country. 19-11 OFFICERS President ..... .............,................... The play, 'tThe Furtain Rises, which is a sentimental comedy, received much favorahle applause from the audience. Romance xvove its way through the plot when Elsa Karling fell in love with two men: comedy lurked in every nook and cranny when Poldi, the maid, stepped in. There were two casts-one played in the afternoon and one in the evening. Both gave splendid performances. CAST OF CHARACTERS Poldi ...,...... ..... ........,..,.............,..., ....,. D uane Botts, Kenneth Cowan launc- Operetta F YOU chanced to be in the building after school and sometimes after supper, you undoubt- edly heard strange sounds coming from the music 1'ooni and auditorium. Far into the night these weird noises went on until you realized that they had changed into beautiful Spanish songs. If you were one of these fortunate students who listened to the practice, you were probably given an incentive to attend the operetta with high hope of a gay and interesting time. Nor were your hopes in vain! On the eve of March 21, the members of the L. H. S. music de- partment presented Carmelita,'l an amusing, colorful operetta which took place just south of the border. No longer were the characters the girl who sits behind me in biology or the boy who sings popular music, but rather they became exciting people staged in a beautiful Span- ish hacienda. We found ourselves enchanted by the beauty of Carmelita, by the enticing smiles of Sally, and we fell in love with the handsome surveyor and the Spanish Carlos. The audience laughed and laughedg it applauded much, and it left the high school well pleased, humming Spanish musicg for it had breathed the magic fragrance of old Mexico. Fomedy lurkerl in every act, pretty girls went in and out of the Cafe door, and strains from popular music all helped to build a gay mood. Impersona- tions of Senator Fish Face, Brenda and Fobina, and Mortimer Snerd furnished much amuse- ment, while the recently organized band, The Esquires, and two vocal trios contributed much to the success of the evening. If A L, V. 1.5 if Senior Play HE Night of January 16th, an extraordinary court room drama, was presented, under the direction of Albert E. James, on the twenty- third and twenty-fourth of May in the L. H. S. auditorium. The play deals tersely with a famous murder trial and follows the American court pro- cedure so accurately and realistically that it makes the play highly educa- tional as well as enormously entertaining. The jury was selected from the audience which rendered the verdict it thought honest. Bailiff ........................ Judge Heath ..................... District Attorney Flint .. Basketball HE Northern Conference clearly demon- strated its strength this year by captur- ing both first and second places in the State Tourney. Longmont started the season by winning four of its 5 practice tilts. A series was split with Eastg and North, South and Manuel were defeated. Eaton was the first conference opponent, netting an easy win of 35-13. But our Achilles' heel showed up in the next game in the form of the Fort Collins Lambkins. The Mystic Hand guarded the Trojan's basket, and only occasionally did one hit. The result, Fort Collins 26, Longmont 21, our first conference defeat. The Troymen regained their zest in the next game. which was with Loveland. Good ball playing found another victory chalked up. this time to the tune of 33-25. Little trouble was encountered in any of our next three games, with Uzelac steadily scoring, Carey and Howe skillfully clearing backboards and setting up plays, and Clay and Mariotti always hustling. Boulder was defeated 36-26. Greeley 25-18, and Eaton 42-17. Then that little heel appeared again. Despite the superb playing of Carey and Howe. the Lambkins won 3-1-29. Longmont never trailed more than five points, and deadlocked the score many times, once with just two min- utes to go. A bad scare was received in the next game with Loveland. Though the Tro- jans trailed all the way, a final drive netted a 230-29 victory. The scare was repeated in the next game. also when Boulder barely fell 27-26. Howe scored at crucial moments to keep the Trojans in the game. The last con- ference game found Greeley defeated 37-3-1, and the Trojans headed to the state playoffs as runnerup for the conference. The first game was with Fort Morgan, Northeastern champs. They received a 31-17 shellacking. Colorado Springs, a seeded team was next. The Men o' Troy played the best game of the year to smother the Terrors Ill-13. Colorado Springs will be remembered for their superb sportsmanship. ln the playoff with Collins. the said heel appeared again. For some rea- son the baskets, which the evening before had swallowed everything the Trojans used, sud- denly closed and kept the Trojans from their second major championship in the same year. Strong teams were found in all the schools. I,ongmont's highly suc- cessful season was opened against Manual, which was defeated 6-0. East gave the Men o' Troy their first setback to the tune of 13-0. The Angels used passes to score both touchdowns. South was next to fall. How- ever, they opened up a dangerous aerial attack in the last quarter netting them 13 points. The final score, 27-13. Then came the opening of league play and a long battle with Fort Collins. Passing seemed to be our op- ponents' strength and our own downfall. An inter- cepted Trojan pass by Collins clinched a 13-6 victory- cutting short a final drive which seemed to have Col- lins on the run. Longmont regained their feet the next week, however, when Greeley fell 41-0. Every Trojan on the squad saw action against the luckless Wildcats. Loveland, last year's state champs, were next en- countered. It was a tough battle, the half ending 0-0. But the Trojans' superiority Won out ending 19-0. An exciting game followed with Englewood. Although Longmont won by the meager score of 7-6, the Pirates were definitely outplayed. Then Boulder was host to the Troymen for a mud bath along with a little foot- ball. The Panthers were crushed 13-0 in a rather sloppy game. League play endedg the result was a tie with Fort Collins, necessitating a playoff. It was a battle superb, but the mighty endurance of the Trojans Won out. The score was 14-13, with the Trojans just three yards from scoring again when the gun sounded. Osborn caught a 30-yard pass which lead to the first score, and Clay plunged for the second. Don Creese dropkicked both extra points. The state semi-final game with Brush was an easy but costly victory, ending 18-0. The gods had smiled on the Trojans throughout the season, and they went hopeful into the big game with Grand Junction. A Trojan fumble allowed Junction to scoreg two other fumbles allowed the Trojans to score. Both extra points were missed. The battle raged on, but neither team threatened dangerously. lVhen the gun sounded, Longmont had its first state champion- ship, though it had to be shared equally with our worthy opponent, Grand Junction. However, the members made a good showing. In the Greeley relays the medley play team stood fourth. In the Colorado relays, Pace placed in the javelin, Clay in the shot, Howe in the high jump, and Frantz in the hurdles. Two dual meets with Boulder were wong the first 73 to 54: the second 65111 to 6122. Clay scored 28 to 21 points in these meets. Point-winners in meets included Clay, Frantz, Jones, Anderson, R.
