CPT. JOHN C. POLLOCK COMMANDING OFFICER USS LO G BEACH CGN- Captain John C. Pollock III, was born in Fargo, North Dakota on October 23, 1943. He spent his ear- ly school years in Fargo and Grand Forks, North Da- kota, then moved to South St. Paul, Minnesota where he attendedhigh school, graduating in 1961. He was commissioned an Ensign in 1965 through the NROTC program at the University of Minnesota. Following commissioning, Captain Pollock at- tended the University of Minnesota Graduate School, receiving a Masterls of Science degree in mathemat- ics in 1967. After completing one year of Nuclear Power Training, Captain Pollock served aboard USS TRUXTUN QCGN 351 from 1968 to 1971, first as Damage Control Assistant, and later as Main Propul- sion Assistant. From 1971 to 1974 he was assigned as Assistant Engineer Officer in the precommission- ing unit of USS CALIFORNIA QCGN 36j during her construction at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry- dock Company. Following six months of Surface Warfare De- partment Head School in Newport, Rhode Island, Captain Pollock returned to USS TRUXTUN QCGN 351 as Engineer Officer from June 1975 to May 1978. In July 1978 he reported to USS CALI- FORNIA CGN 361 to serve as Executive Officer un- til December 1979. From January 1980 to July 1982 he served as the Surface Nuclear Power Offi- cer Branch Head at the Naval Military Personnel Command in Washington, D.C. ' From December 1982 to February 1985, Cap- tain Pollock served as commanding officer of USS HARRY W. HILL QDD 9865. Under his command, the ship made two extended deployments to the Western Pacific and ,Indian Ocean. After his com- mand tour he was assigned to the staffs of Command- er Naval Surface Force Pacific and Commander Na- val Air Force Pacific as the senior member of the combined Nuclear Propulsion Mobile Training Team. Captain Pollock assumed command of USS LONG BEACH QCGN 91 in September 1987. He and his wife, Barbara reside in San Diego, California. Captain Pollock holds the following decorations: Meritorious Service Medal ltwo awardsl, Navy Com- mendation Medal Cthree awardsi, Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle Effi- ciency Award 441, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service De- ployment Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. 5 I I-I-I O.
