The Edge of Feasibility In support of rescue operations, LONG BEACH provided a ready platform for rescue helicopters. LONG BEACH con- ducted over 800 helo landings and refueled them with over 82,000 gallons of fuel. Admiral Zumvvalt commented The total dedication, ingenuity, and professionalism of the contributing members of each SAB effort has been extra- ordinary. The reputation LONG BEACH maintained in the Gulf of Tonkin can be attributed to one factor vvhich overshadovvs all others - her men. To work over 100 hours each vveek and still have the drive to excel takes a special type of man. Twenty-seven LONG BEACH men became fathers during the deployment and savv their children for the first time when we arrived home. No, LONG BEACH vvas not just a ship at sea for over eight months, but over 1,000 men per- forming magnificently under the tremendous pressures of a combat environment. After one particularly difficult SAR effort, Vice Admiral Cooper, Commander of Navy units in the Gulf of Tonkin commented that LONG BEACH had performed, on the: edge of feasibility.
