This was Commander William W. Sullivan's first Western Pacific deployment as Executive Officer of LONG BEACH. His job was to make certain all facets of the ship were running smoothly and working together. So it was not sur- prising to have him stop by an office or working space or to get a phone call from him about a matter vital to the ship's mission. Commander Sullivan was aboard the nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS ENTERPRISE when she, LONG BEACH and the nuclear powered missile frigate USS BAINBREIDGE went on their famous 1964 unreplenished cruise around the world.
