Dr. Emestina Gaibutt-Paiales. Not to the strong is the battle, Not to the swift is the race . ! . Ecclesiastes 9:11 (paraphrased) How do I love thee ' Let me count my ways. I love thee with the force of tempered steel that holds together all my frail deformities, the power of a mind grown far too strong to over- balance any weekness in my hands. I cannot give thee strength or graceful form but, just for that, my love is twice as great because it seems to thrive in desert soil and flourish in indif- ference ' s drought. I love thee with the power of my will, my mind and heart and soul, my everything, and when the spark of this frail form shall tail, then have no doubt that I shall love thee still. Ernestina Garbutt-Parrales Photography. HiUtard Griggs Viiions % k es! i- ' ' ' ..■V.T Af !■' ' J Thought shall be the harder, heart the keener, courage the greater. As our strength fails. Battle of Maldon (lOth century) If one word could be used to describe Dr. Ernestina Garbut- Parrales it would have to be Dedication. Dedication is a word that has permeated her life ever since its humble beginnings in the small country of Belize (British Honduras). Dr. Garbutt learned dedication at an early age being that she was the child of missionaries. But it didn ' t stop there. She went on not only to complete undergraduate and graduate work in Secreterial Science, but also to complete a Doctoral Degree in Spanish Phoenetics at the University of Southern California in 1977. Students who have been fortunate to have had her as a teacher know that she is dedicated to academics. But that is not the only form of dedication which Dr. Garbutt has. She also possesses a strong, vibrant dedication to life and Uving it to the fullest extent. Early in the 1960 ' s Dr. Garbutt contracted a rare disease called Scleroderma. This disease is a degenerative disease which affects the body tissue. But because of her extreme determination this has hardly been able to slow her down. Among the various activities with which Dr. Garbutt fills her free time are drawing, painting and enjoying her pets. She also finds time to attend Thursday nights at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, read and write poetry. But there ' s also travel. Dr. Garbutt has travelled extensively to Spain and Europe. While in Spain she teaches at the University of Salamanca and when in Europe she visits her sister in Switzerland. As one can plainly see Dr. Ernestina Garbutt is an individual tru- ly dedicated to life and living it to the fullest. She is one who won ' t let anything stop her from achieving all that she is able. So for un- surpassed determination and dedication, we the 1984-85 VISIONS staff dedicate these pages to you ... Dr. Ernestina Garbutt-Parales. Jay Williams Visual Enlightenment 9 I do not know what love is. I said to my friend. My friend said nothing — I am searching for the answer, would you help me. My friend smiled — Upon seeing my friend again I explained that I was frustrated and disappointed from our previous encounter. I know that you know the answer. I demanded. My friend looked directly into my eyes and boxed my ears. I screamed, I held my ears. I cried. Finally the pain subsided. Why? My friend smiled —■i M: :-ji ■• : r Tony Shepperd What is it! Please tell me! ' I pleaded vainly. For my friend only save me a much more radiant smile. 1 was frustrated. 1 did not want a happy smile. I needed an answer. Continuing to smile my friend rose and left. I did not understand. I now understand. When my friend boxed my ears I was in pain. It made sense to me. I expected an answer from my friend but I was too occupied with my search that I could not enjoy the smiles my friend gave me. I was astounded. Love is not an expectation, an answer, a theory — Love is. I smiled and hugged my friend. Gennosuke Kuniyoshi Fall 1984 The empty silence of sounding church bells. The muted colors of brilliantly lit stained glass — An enshrouded door of light. Opening the door the light enveloped me — The formless church dissipated. If I hold the light it will also dissipate. Gennosuke Kuniyoshi Fall 1984 I Visual Enlightenment 11 MY LAMP In this light, everything is different In this sober light, 1 am different Through this curtain of tears, I am here In this simple light, it is still In my head, I am tired In thir light, are ghostly images In this light, are no parasites In this light, my heart is heavy In this light, my soul rests In this light, it is so very quiet In this light, it can be very peaceful In this light, all is right Silent Running Fall 1984 Jay Williams 12 Visions Images of broken light Which dance before me like a million eyes. The flame rises at the sulfur ' s instigation. The candle flickers only slightly. Upward dances the trail of warmth. It pierces its perceiving clean blaze. The smoke mingles and merges with the fragrance of jasmine. Frankincense, that is, incense to be sincere with. The fire sings the stray tendrils of hair That invade its domain. This pungent ambience permeates my little cubicle; It is my cell, my womb. Four- walls form my outer periphery. A desk, a bureau, a bottom bunk bed, These are my physical parameters. I feel free, I feel comfort, I feel sacred Here in my consecrated receptacle. Jay WiUiams Visual Enlightenment 13 In shallow men, the fish of little thoughts cause much commotion. In oceanic minds, the whales of inspiration create hardly a ripple. Rhythm. Fluid rhythm. Rhythm that flows. The water, sister of Fecundity, rises and falls. The salt, the spray cleanses. This brisk alacrity strips my dirty, worn layers away. The body so strong, so deep, It lends itself to sundry protean forms. The turbulence evoked on the surface Is imperceptible beneath. Inward, underneath, Down into the aquatic. Immersed in stability. It is dark. It is immutable. Almost immortal. Neal Stevens ' _ j.A u ] )rr ' vT , t -c ' - Jay Williams The river flows tranquilly on, And the flowers are red. Now, before me, the dead trees come alive. I embrace and cherish the silence. My senses are withdrawn, my actions mitigated. The tumult of my mind is stilled. I cease my battle with emotion. Within my head I still hear undulation; I still see light on the curtains of my eyelids. At last, I center myself. I do nothing. There is nothing to be done, really, In petty trivialities. Nurturing contemplation is luxurious and edifying. Life is just a game. It is all a game. I may play it well, but after the chess pieces are stored away in the box. Reality is ever-present. Because Reality is. You are. I am. Peace be with you. With this thought in mind, my quest began. After diligently searching, my quest was completed in the knowledge that what this page needed to express was my sincere thanks to everyone who made this year great! The first person I want to thank is Bob for his volunteering (after my begging and pleading) to shoulder the burden of making this yearbook a success. Without JoAnn constantly looking after our financial resources we never would have been able to stay as close to our budget as we did. After seeing all the late hours Pete and his staff put into the Criterion, it is no wonder it looked so good this year. This year ' s Senate under the direction of William took on many issues. T.V.s ' , shorts and a fund raiser for Ethiopia are just a few issues that first come to mind. I ' m sure many freshmen this year appreciated the help that Rachel and Donna provided as this year ' s Student Services ' co-directors. Dale provided us with many hours of fun this year as our Social Activities Director. Doug was the unknown source of all the films that we enjoyed. The dedication that Charles showed to his work as Cam- pus Ministries Director was a source of motivation to many, myself included. Gaelyn filled our P.R. needs and made sure that the year ' s activities were well publicized. Murphy ' s Law had a field day with this year ' s Classified but Jose finally triumphed with a publication appreciated by all. On the surface this list may seem large. In reality, however, it is just the tip of the iceberg. After all, each and everyone here this year had a part in making this year a success. Thanks for making this year great! I kW 21X l ;j onj VISIONS VISIONS VISIONS STAFF STAFF STAFF EDITOR To begin with, being editor brings on many responsibilities. Respon- sibilities to Faculty, Administration, but most important to you my fellow students. This is probably the main reason I chose the theme enlightenment. Being editor of this year ' s yearbook, I have often been asked, why. ' Afterall there are quite a few more things that I could do with my even- ings besides staying up for days on end and ruining my already ailing g.p.a. Well, on these two pages you will find my reasons. 202 Vhioni Enlightenment is very necessary for our growth as college students and as in- dividuals. It begins with questioning. Questioning is good. It shows that we have the spark of inquisitiveness that is important for starting the fire of desire for knowledge. Questioning can, however, be a deterent. We would never ques- tion just for questionings ' sake, for a spark without a purpose is wor- thless. Once the spark is ignited, we must continue to fuel the fire. Diligent study and searching is a principle requirement. This one phase alone can make or break our attempts to become enlightened. It takes work. Lots of hard work. As experience has taught, dedication brings perseverance. And with perseverance comes success. Success is the sweetest when attained after arduous toilsome work. We can never fully enjoy our newly started fire of knowledge unless we sit back and en- joy the glow. We rest assured in the fact that the fire burns because of the work we put into it. As with the fire, knowledge and enlightenment need to have both good fuel and hard work to keep them going. I know as you read these pages and look at the pictures in this 1984-85 Vi- sions that you will in some way be enlightened. I know that there is something here in these 224 pages for everyone, whether it be autographs of close fiiends or just the book itself, you can indeed be enlightened. God bless each and every one of you as you continue on in lite. May it hold all the nice blessings that each of you deserve. See you all ' round the fire. Bob Griffiths Editor, Visions 1984-85 Staff 203 A 204 Viswnj PHOTO (, 1 O Staff 205 ART EDITOR What is stress.- This book is stress. It is the culmination of endless deadlines and all-nighters that were all too common. Working with Bob, Jay, and Margaret was much too time consuming but always fun! Enjoying their company was an enlightening experience in itself I am thankful for Al Johnson being able to find humor in my seemingly dismal situation and Alan Collins for his understanding and sustaining en- couragement. I especially want to thank my friends (you know who you are, you ' d better know who you are!) for making this year bearable. Without you all would lose meaning. For all uf us, enlightenment is either harsh or pleasant. And for whatever reasons or cir- cumstances we all benefit from it. I was enlightened this year and learned much. The majority of my lessons were unpleasant but this IS all a part of being caught in reality ' s net. Remember, if enlightenment be sweet then let all eat candy, but if it is painful, then let all feel pain. VOID: MANUFACTURED BY HAPPY BUT FRUITLESS PURSOOTS INC. 206 Vrsforti SPORTS EDITOR I volunteered to work on the yearbook at the beginning of this year not realizing that as the year progressed I would become the sports editor. Now that 1 look back the whole experience was great. While working on the yearbook I learned a few important things. First, I learned how helpful and healthful participation in the intramural program is at La Sierra, fielpful in the sense that I made good friends and learned how to com- pete with those friends. Healthful in that it gave me a time out from stu- dying, which is needed by every student. Another thing I learned was how friendships grow by being placed in stressful situations. 1 want to thank all my friends for giving me support when I needed it and help when there was no one around. I have truely been enlightened by my ex- perience of working on the yearbook. 1 hope you, the student body, have also been enlightened by this year ' s Visions. Margaret Young : ' ' m iv A ..
