ONE OF LOGANâS BREAD N BUTTER PLAYS, CHIEFTAIN GRIDDERS DO IT AGAIN Loganâs first opponent of the season was Bexley. The Blue Lions had been an early stumbling block in previous seasons. This year, however, the Chiefs converted their mighty ground game and rolled over Bexley 32-0. In their second non-league bout, the Chiefs took on Maysville, a strong class A school. Our strong offensive machine and stubborn defensive proved too much for Maysville, and the final outcome gave us a 34-6 margin. The Chieftains opened league play at Gallipolis with a bang. Sparked by vicious running from the backfield, Logan slaughtered the hapless Blue Devils 44-0. Coach Fisherâs highly regarded Wellston Rockets were the Chiefsâ next opponents. Although a constant downpour slowed the Chiefsâ offensive game, it did not faze the rugged defense, who blanked the Rockets. Logan managed to score in both halves and took the game 16-0. Middleport next visited the Hilltop gridiron. Coach Adams substituted frequently, as the Yellow Jackets were downed 32-0, giving Logan their third straight league shut- out. Jacksonâs tough Ironmen were the Chiefsâ next opponents. Although the Ironmen were favored, the Chiefs easily downed them 38-6. The highly touted âBattle of the Fullbacksâ was a thrilling rout for spectators, as Loganâs Dale Brenning out-ran and out-played Jacksonâs Davis. Loganâs next victim was Nelsonville. The Greyhounds proved an easy mark for the Adamsmen as the opponent went down 34-6. This game was the sixth of seven games in which the Chiefs rolled up 30 or more points. The following week Logan journeyed to Athens. The Bulldogs, the Chiefsâ personal rivals, scored 22 points, but couldnât cope with Loganâs offense. Since this game was a must for the Chiefsâ championship hopes, the team came through in fine style, win- ning 44-22. LOGAN (6-0) VS. POMEROY (6-0) Disregarding the tremendous pressure on them, Loganâs Mighty Chieftains proved once and for all who the best team in the SEOAL was. Both offense and defense were equal to the task as the Champs won it all 18-0. Principal Harley Ellinger and Coach Mel Adams with Loganâs second straight SEOAL Championâs trophy. The final game of the season was played against Hillsboro. The Chiefs easily out- classed the Indians, routing them 46-0. In the final AP poll, Loganâs team ranked 11th, higher than any previous Chieftain squad. 61 S.E.O.A.L. Coach Bill Nardoâs strong freshman squad rolled over five straight opponents, bright- ening Coach Adamsâ hopes for future varsity teams. The team squeaked by Athens 8-6, and by Jackson 6-0, and then routed Circleville 22-6, Marietta 36-0, and Wellston 32-6. 67 CHIEFTAIN CAGERS ROW I: Merl Bell, Mike Nixon, Wayne Frazier, Tom Frazier, George Hummel. The 1964-65 Chieftain Basketballers were headed by All-League guard Mike Nixon, who was the leading point-getter on the squad. Tom Auker was the top rebounder with Bill Westfall close behind. The Chiefs showed fine potential in the second Wellston game on the L.H.S. court, when they ran wild with a 95-74 win. Loganâs baseball squad had to make a comeback to take their second straight league championship. After losing their first two league starts, the Chiefs were given little chance of retaining their crown. But Coach Allenâs baseballers proved otherwise by charging to win five straight loop games, tying Wellston for the Northern Division lead. In the playoff, the Allensmen handed the Rockets an 8-3 defeat and advanced to the league finals against Jackson. Jim Brandt and Steve Mowery sparkled as Logan gave the Ironmen a 4-2 defeat. First baseman Brandt powered a home run to drive in the winning runs.
