Grant us brotherhood, not only for this day but for all our years - a brotherhood not of words but of acts and deeds. XVe are, all of us, children of earth - grant us that simple knowledge. If our brothers are oppressed, then we are oppressed. If they hunger, we hunger. If their freedom is taken away, our freedom is not securef, Through the ages it has been man's great desire to liye in peace with his fellow-man. The Magna Carta and the Bill of Rights fostered individual free- dom and security. But man has come to realize that the peace of one nation depends upon the peace of all nations. To this end the United Nations is dedi- cated - to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men - and of nations, large and smallf, XVe, the Class of 1955 of Lodi High School, reared in the shadow of international strife - well aware of the peril to our individual dignity and freedom, be- seech you to join us in a solemn pledge of active sup- port in the United Nations - the greatest effort yet attempted by man toward the realization of universal security - for the UN. today is the hope of world peace tomorrow. 4 1 1 7 1 1 , , 7 5' fi' -wkdlm . fl 4 -6,4 . They bring unity and a sharing of interest and ideas among our students, and of course, they offer many opportunities for enjoyment as well. Extra-curricular activities serve to round out a studentls personality, to teach him the art of working harmoniously with others, and to make the years spent in high school more interesting and more memorable. The Student Council, the representative governing body of our school, is equivalent to the General Assembly, the governing body of the United Nations. The class cabinets are subsidiary governing units of the Student Council, while the many clubs are branches of this governing body, each with its own sphere of activities and responsibilities. All those who partici- pate in these activities are benefiting their school, their community, and most of all, themselves. 64 gy . 1 fl' SSISTANC Pu 572, C' 25 V v' I 3 Mae? WA ! Several hectic meetings were held under the guidance of Miss Selma Plaxsun. and suggestions for the theme were offered. Over the sum- mer we worked out our ideas and in September the United Nations theme was selected as the best. XVe visited the beautiful United Nations building in New York for inspiration and started right in with layouts, special features. art and writing. lt has been said that genius is ten percent inspiration and ninety percent perspiration. The editorial staff of the 1955 issue of the Magic Casements, while not geniuses. nevertheless did a great deal of per- spiring before the yearbook became a finished product. XVe had our minor quarrels and our violent outbursts of temper. our headaches and our going-to-the-printer blues. but somehow we always managed to put our heads together and come up with a fresh idea that renewed our enthusiasm. Our yearbook had many contributors. all working together with a fine spirit of co-operation. These people had but one aim: to give our class, the Seniors of 1955, a yearbook they will be proud of and cherish for many years to come. Now on your left you see the Music Room, Library, typing class and cooking room. On this floor you will observe the physics and wood shop classes, and over there on your right the art room and gymnasium. This is only a sample of what is offered here at the U. N.-the knowledge and pleasure that are yours for the taking, ladies and gentlemen. At the end of this hall you see future scientists at work on a problem in chemistryg in that room students are learning to express themselves in a foreign language. if you listen closely you will hear singing from the room with the heavy door. In this auditorium the students assemble for important eventsg in that gymnasium they train their bodies to be as sound and healthy as their minds. Do you hear the sound of typewriters? Our future secretaries. Do you see the boys and girls bending over their drawing boards? Perhaps they will be painters or sculp- tors. Do you smell the aroma of good food from the cooking room? The homemakers-the backbone of America. In the room directly to your left you can see businessmen, lawyers, doctors, teachers, nurses, actors, minis- ters-and all will have a share in the building of a better world. This is our U. N.-this is our treasure-house of wisdom, where we learn, create, laugh and cry. Directly ahead of you is the exit. I hope you've enjoyed your tour. This way for U. N.
