Our task is to provide outstanding education and training in moral, intellectual, spiritual, and physical values to young men and women who will one day assume the roles of leaders and active laymen in the work of the church so that Christ can soon come to claim His own. Lodi Academy graduates will be an important part of the foundation upon which the future work of this denomination will rest. ln building that foundation to withstand the pressure of time and the stresses of coming events, nothing is more important than the caliber and quality of the young church members who each year enter our doors and prepare for lives of service. The security of the church will some day be in their hands. I trust that young people throughout northern California will realize this great opportunity for service to humanity and that they will heed the call. Sincerely your friend, W. T. Will The Executive at work and at home .,- uf' 1 : ff . QM , , Across the green carpet, sitting maiestically behind a massive mahogany desk, Principal W. T. Will concen- trates on dictating an important letter to his secretary, Mrs. Norman Roy. Stopping for a moment in his busy sched- ule Mr. Will poses for a family portrait. Standing, from left to right, is: Larry, age ll, Mrs. Will, and Nyla, age eight. y . ,,. ...fd T? i Visitors to the principal's office in the afternoon meet Mrs. Norman Roy first. That is when she takes care of Mr. W. T. WiIl's correspondence. To some she may work behind the scenes, but without her help we could not have a successful school year. Registrar joins in many activities ,.W Transcripts, grades, honor rolls and ab- sence lists keep Mr. Don Prior, A.B., very busy in the Registrars office. Besides being a Senior class sponsor, he also takes an active part in various sports. His teach- ing load includes driver's education, American government and American history. Well liked by all, Mr. and Mrs, Prior, Cindy and Gary live in the new duplex for which he laid blocks last summer. The senior dormitory boys look forward to the,day when they will be asked to his house for Sabbath dinner. He well knows how much a fellow enioys a home- cooked meal! Lower left: l'll excuse you this time, says Mr. Prior as Earl Mattheus explains why he was absent. Working in the office, are: Jeanne Abston, George Graham, Dorothy Cleveland, and Kenneth lng. Below: Mr. and Mrs. Prior, Cindy and Gary pause for a moment before leaving on a trip to the City. Inn Accounts and ledgers keep htm busy Getting and spending money so that not a penny will be wasted is the respon- sibility ot Mr. Frank Gibbon, A.B. We are fortunate to have someone as dependable and helpful as Mr. Gibbon to handle the accounts and buying tor the school. He is a graduate 'ot Walla Walla College and has been here eight years. Charlie, Richard and Terry, his three sons, are always eager for a game of ten- nis, baseball or golf. Mr. Gibbon claims that's what keeps him young. Below: As Terry and his dad leave for the tennis court they tell Mrs. Gibbon to be sure to have supper ready when they return. Lower right: Registration day is always a big day, Every student stops at the business office to make financial arrangements. Miss Virginia Randall and Mr. Frank Gibbon are writing receipts and taking tuition money. , AVTV ,wr W My if Dean Wor Mr. J. W. Hottal, A.B., is a real pop to the Norsemen. As Dean and instructor of three P.E. classes and one tumbling class, he still finds time to give some counsel and advice to his fellows. Mr. Hottal is a graduate of Union College where he maiored in Bible and minored in History. His favorite hobby is an invigorating game of basketball. He relaxes by listening to his Hi-Fi, or working on his collection of church bulletins. Mrs. Hottal always greets the boys of north hall with her pleasing smile when they come to her with requests, and she surely has found a place in their hearts. Building pyramids, front rolls, and back rolls are familiar to the fellows in tumbling class. In the bottom row of the pyramid are Duane Bechthold, Wayne Gohl, Darol Funk, Jim Hampton. Middle row: Lowell Hagele, Howard Wallace, Virgil Wahl. Top: Richard Bietz. . . . yes, we were iust ready to leave, says Mr, Hottal as Mrs. Hottal waits anxiously to go to the faculty party. She especially enioys painting and is an accom- plished dressrnaker. Lower right: Miss Louise Roberson, assistant Dean of Girls, steps out of her room to quiet some of her girls in the Annex. Lodi Academy isn't new to her because during 1952-53, she also served as assistant dean. Below: Mrs. Lena B. Cady, our first semester Dean of Girls, is at one of her never-ending iobs, hemming dresses! Mrs. Greer, Elder Greer, Sharon and Donna enioy an exciting game of Sorry. Bible study develops a strong character Unto two thousand and three hundred days, then shall the sanctuary be cleansed, quotes Mr. Milford D. Perrin, A.B. Besides teaching Bible doctrines, speech, journalism and printing, he is also advisor for the GATEWAY and LODIAN LIGHT. Mr. Perrin and his family spent the summer in Washington, D.C., where he took advanced work in Bible at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. He is a graduate of Pacific Union College. Science and Mathematic Equations, square roots, cubes, theo- rems, and factors, are all very familiar terms to Mr. Lowell Bunch, A.M., because he heads the mathematics department. He graduated from Walla Walla College and received his A.M. at Whitman College in Washington. Mr. Bunch came to Lodi eight years ago from Gem State Academy in Idaho. He spent the years of l924- l939 as a missionary in Singapore and Manila. Students enjoy his classes because they are flavored with bits of witticism. Mr. Bunch's supply of jokes never seems to be exhausted. 2:7 are well represented The slide rule makes it possible tor draftsmen to make mathematical calculations rapidly, explains Mr. Cecil Mayor, M.S. During his three years here at Lodi he has proved himself an excellent instructor in biology, chemistry and physics. Mr. Mayor deserves much credit for working overtime to make his courses beneficial to youth of this modern, scientific age. He is a graduate of Emmanuel Missionary College and the University of Michigan. For relaxation, Mr. Mayor claims watch repairing to be perfect, while Mrs. Mayor enioys china painting. Gathered for family worship before going to Vespers, Mr. Wolfe reads a text to his wife, Jo and two children, Bob and Jean. A trim campus is his pleasant task I Keeping up the campus is a nevenending task. Mr. Hagele turns the water off so he can water another area. German is an easy subiect for Eric Flato fstandingl, who has recently come to the United States from Ger- many. You see, he can speak very little English and Mr. Hagele takes him through some drills as the rest of the class look on. 26 Mr. Arthur Hagele, B.S., came to Lodi from Sheyenne River Academy. He is the teacher of the newly organized German class. He spent eight of his twenty-seven years in the teaching profes- sion at S.R.A, Mr, Hagele graduated from South Dakota State Teachers College. The neat appearance of the campus can be at- tributed to Mr. Hagele. The group of fellows that work for him are constantly working to improve the looks of the campus. The Cafeteria and Laundry are indispensable Pies are Miss Elizabeth Eitel's specialty but these home-made pies do not last long at Lodi Academy. On this particular day, she tempted the students with her delicious pumpkin delights. Miss Eitel has been in cafeteria work for thirteen years, four of them here at Lodi. Among her hobbies are reading, cooking, and traveling by plane. Last summer Miss Eitel attended a food directors' workshop at La Sierra College. For five weeks the group studied diets and ways of preparing new, tasty dishes. ,Af 5' l 31-, ' in lf? At the close of a busy spring day Mr. and Mrs. Hill, with Dougie and Pam, pose with their new V.W. before taking a spin into the country. Mr. Melvin S. Hill's long, tedious hours ot work make Lodi Academy's 65-piece concert band out- standing. Mr. Hill received his B.S. from La Sierra College and his M.M. from the University of Southern California. Besides giving private lessons and conducting the band, Mr. Hill also directs the Sabbath School orchestra and is an Associated Student Body sponsor. Long hours of work to prepare for the banquet and the amateur hour have been squeezed into his busy schedule. Xl he musical organizations outstanding Names like Lodians, Madrigals, and Lodettes may sound rather complicated, but they are choral groups conducted by Norman J. Roy, M.M., each week. Sponsoring the Associated Student Body and the Junior Class take up the rest of his time. Mr. Roy is a graduate of Union College and after working five summers he received his Master of Music Education degree last summer at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Being in charge of the Temperance Club meant choosing winners of the oratorical contest, essay contest, and poster contest. lt also meant organiz- ing the Club and planning a trip to San Francisco. , A N'-CA N, T'-QM.. -at Diligently practicing under Mr. Roy's skillful leader- ship are, left to right: Marlene Dollinger, Max Eber- hardt, Lois Voth, Lowell Hagele, Janis Thiele, Shirley Fuller, Gloria Rund, and Louane Kelm. The piano and organ are familiar instruments to Mrs. Maude Miller Wolfe, Mus. B. Her music is enjoyed during chapel, Friday night vespers, and Sabbath School. She was born in the Far East, the daughter of a missionary doctor and wife, Dr. and Mrs. H. W. Miller. Her teaching experience includes the Far East- ern Academy in China, Upper Columbia Academy in Washington and Mt. Vernon Academy in Ohio. Mrs. Wolfe received her Bachelor of Music degree from Capitol University, Columbus, Ohio, and she is on her way to obtaining a Master of Arts in the near future. Press manager enjoys work Like President Eisenhower, Mr. Leroy Cooke also enjoys playing golf in his few spare moments. His years of experience are the backdrop for his work as manager of the Lodi Academy press. Southwestern Junior College was where he took his printing course. He is always willing to chat a few moments with curious students that wander into his print shop. Mr. Cooke, with his St. Nicholas front, thor- oughly enioys a hearty laugh and often comes up with a joke himself. l Mr. Cooke pauses a moment from his linotype work to answer a question from one of his student helpers. Before bedtime Lynda, Larry, Lonna and Lou Ann like to gather around Daddy and listen to him read a bedtime story. Then off to bed they scamper. Fall festival and picnic are gala events The Scandinavian costumes of Jean Brown and Don Tonn were selected as the best at the Fall Festival. 1 A whole day of contests, games and food! That was the school picnic. The Senior Class won the cup for having the most points in the track and field events that took place in the morning. In the afternoon an exciting inter- class baseball game took place. The Festival is a night of costumes and en- tertainment. After the program a picture was shown to conclude the evening. Shouts of encouragement come from the grandstand as students cheer for their class at the annual picnic at Micke's Grove. All that practice behind the gym did pay off for Carl Anderson. Each brings a few special trinkets from home with which to adorn his room. The dormitory in itself is a small community. Each per- son plays an important role in the life of the community. The club offi- cers may be thought of as the mayor and other officials. The monitors are the law enforcing agency, for they keep the dormitory and study periods quiet. With each one doing his part a Kathy McFarland and Diane McClelland, relaxing their dormitory room glance through last year's LODIAN LIGHT. 1 pi community thrives. Before going to classes, Melvin Sage gives his shoes the last minute once over while his roorn- mate, Tom Hopmann, makes sure his hands are lily white. School days are busy days Eight o'clock and another school day has begun. A clattering of feet is heard as a few stragglers rush for a class. After all, a tardy means a demerit. Locker rooms buzz with excitement. They are a favorite congregating place, for there, many experiences, both in and out of class, are exchanged between friends. Equally as busy as the locker room is the book store. Buying books, pencils, paper, shampoo, tissues, and other small necessities always keep a crowd around the counter. This table is full of industrious students quietly studying. Left side: Montell Clendenon, Larry Potter, Erna Flato, Larry Baumbach and Hud- son Dark. Right side: Pierre Velardi, Carolyn Plubell, Alton Pfeifle, Karis Schack and Josephine Yialelis. Any one with a free period in the morning is scheduled to spend it in the library-afternoon at- tendance is voluntary. i 77 ...Q S l as ' 1 221 o Linda Bradley, Nancy Masters, Wanda Curry, Gloria Rund and Betty Trefz quickly choose their books, snatch a bit of news and rush back to class before the tardy bell rings. Darol Funk stops by the bookstore to pick up a pencil and tablet from storekeeper Terry Gilbert before classes start. BUUHSTDRE sf, ' tx 'I g1lHF ' P E and Aufo Mechanics are favorite classes P. E. Class means a workout for everyone. Here the girls in Mr. Hottal's fifth period P. E. class warm up by doing a few exercises. When the days are nice they will play baseball but if days are cold and rainy, volleyball and basketball are played in the gym. .f -ect., i, 1-av r'- 's am Safety is aim of Driver Education Sandra Loevven evidently thought there was a quicker fray to get to classes but tound out, like so many others, that speed does not pay. Dan Runkle, Janis Thiele and Bob Ostermiller are the victims. The best punishment the Safety Council could giye was to but her in their driving training Course. There she learned her responsibility at the wheel. Atter all, the life she saves could well be her own. Department of Labor 6 Getting ready to clean the administration building are: Ralph Cross, Melvin Sage and Ronald Patterson. Those hall floors always shone! Janitors, readers, and maintenance workers are a part ot Lodi Academy. Office work to do, papers to correct, floors to sweep are among the tasks that keep students busy in the afternoon. ?-1 , A 'yi 15k7,?.2x,w,ktfVf S' f rv f' 5, A ., 4 Busily at work are Elder Herbert Greer's readers: Becky Silva, .lack Bowyer, and Pat Cupler. Keeping the lawn mowed and trimmed is a big iob, but Bob Osterrniller does his best. Snow trips mean thrills and chills Two whole days of skiing in the high Sierrasl School was forgotten and semester tests were behind. Those who could ski and those who could not had a wonderful time. Snowburned faces of those who sat close to the fire really glowed that night as everyone waited for the call, Come and get it. All ioined in the games played in the lodge after supper. Finally bedtime rolled around and no one seemed to mind at all. The second day was a little colder than the first but that didn't stop anyone's fun. Everyone went for a good time and everyone got it. Above: Ellis Howard, Tom Hopmann, George Graham, Kenneth Ing, Carolyn Cortner, and Annetta Smith gather around the fireplace to Above: Ronald Patterson and Bill Bechthold enjoy a brief rest while riding to the top of the chair lift. The Associated Student Body ban- quet is the outstanding event of the second semester. The theme of Eve- ning in Paris, accented with soft music and Parisien skyline on the backdrop, made the evening very fascinating. After the meal, everyone turned to watch the program in which various students participated. Janice Quella, Roger Fisher, Ronald Patterson, Naomi Rushold, Melvin Sage, and Pat Butler enioy a glass of punch under the umbrella. The freshmen find the delicious meal and good conversation especially thrill- ing. A variety ot sports are provided so that each one can participate. Intramural games provide exciting tourna- ments. Usually there are five teams as each season rolls around. These teams play tor top honors and to the best team go Lodi Academy lntramural Awards. Each team plays hard to win these pieces of paper tor they are a reward for the best. Some of the most spirited games are those played between classes. These games, how- ever, are not part of the tournament. A Junior-Senior game is a sure bet to draw an enthusiastic crowd who encourage the play- ers with shouts and squeals augmented sometimes with drums or cymbals.
