Hello —Cuten Tag, What is an annual? Pages of memories or nostalgia? Do people trap time or own it? Is it an image or an illusion? It's probably all these things and more to each person. I hope that we can create annual that will bring back the good old days and recall the memories that you have experienced at lodgepole High. For its very hard to try and trap time and memories in just 64 pages. Sincerely yours. The Annual Staff i We, the Senior Class would like to take this opportunity to dedicate the 1980 Annual to a very special person. He has helped each of us in many ways. He's given us encouragement when we were unsure, a compliment when we needed a lift, his patience, time, and most of all his understanding. He has been our class sponsor for the past three years, and somehow, through it all, has not been sent to Hastings, or pleaded insanity. We would not have been able to accomplish near as many things these past three years without him, and we are very grateful to have him on our side. To you, Mr. Epling, we dedicate this annual. Thanks for being such a wonderful teacher and sponsor, but most of all, Thank-you For Bein' A Friend. 7 Administration Mr. Leroy Cundall - Superintendent of Schools Mr. Roger Stutzman - High School Principal Mr Robert Davis— Elementary Principal Business Board of Education: Albert Fraass, Pete Rufenacht, Bob Nightingale, Leroy Cundall, Linda Market Delmar Zalesky, and Mary Ann Dickinson. 3 Panthers Provide Pride Front Row: Doug Honebein, Bruce Namuth, Gaien Bartling, John Bruns, Steve Mika, Ken Hodges, Keith Huff; 2nd row: Phil Narjes, Randy Ommen, John Bartling, Bob Campbell, Ron Ommen, Mike From, Jami Bond, Benny Barnhart, Stuart Flessner; 3rd row: Coach Mencke, Ron (Mouse) Jessen, |ohn Frerichs, Randy Anderson, Kent Sick, Cliff Crimes, Kurt Huff, Robby Ommen, ass't coach was Coach Weber. As everyone of us learns And many a failure turns about When we might have won had we stuck it out! Don't give up . . tho the pace seems slow, you may succed with another blow. Success is failure turned inside out The silver tint of the cloud of doubt. And you can never feel how close you are. It may be near when it seems afar. So stick to the fight when you are hardest hit . . . It's when things seem worst that you musn't quit. They upset number one Leyton and eventually held the number one spot. They finished their season in the top twenty. Our seniors, Julie Mika and Debbie Buss, contributed both leadership and volleyball play. Julie held state rankings for spiking percentage (3rd) and ace spikes (32nd). Julie also recieved the team spiker award at 93% accuracy and 16% ace spikes and was selected All Conference 1st Team Spiker. Due to the arrangement of the picture, we are unable to list the names of the people Annual Staff Mr. Ernest Hemingway? On the annual staff this year we had a big class of 4 people. We had a strange occurance of twins, who were both named Faye. One Faye, Faye Dickinson, was very noisy all the time. There were incidents where we had to bound and gag her for some peace and quiet; the other Faye, Faye Rankin, was just the opposite of this. She was very quiet and hardly spoke a word to anyone: Nancy Namuth spent alot of time roller coasting into dream land, and was always disorganizing everything and losing things. Brenda Barnhart, was known as the Sleeping Beauty because of the unusual behavior during class —which was falling asleep. Finaly, Mr. Diercks was the head honcho. He was the one who organized everything Mancy disorganized Without his Simon and Garfunkle records, we could have never made it through the long nights working on the annual. tj Administrative Personnel Marv luedes — Janitor Gene Fraass, Dennis Soucie, and Dean Christensen — Bu Drivers Ruth Bartling, Lamila Nielson — Cooks Mary Jo From — Secretary 16 Stuart Fraass Michele Yanney j hris kastens Sandy Kahrs Randal Sick helley Rufenacht limy From Crystal Christensen Chris Skov Darrell Sharman Troy Brown Cayla Wittrock Galen Wittrock Dena Zalesky Terry Slingsby Cory Michelman Rodney Wilkins Dean Soucie Bart Stoll Kim Barnhart Leland Adamson Pep Club Front: Lisa K., Dena Z., Lisa F„ Stephanie H., Connie D. That morning we marched down College Avenue, which was quite an experience. Half-way through the parade, a certain drummer lost his drumsticks, and later a distinguished young man tripped on a crack in the pavement which started the last three ranks in a hysteric attack. But, in spite of all the crazy happenings, we did a pretty good job That afternoon we went to see C.S.U. take on Utah State. It was a good game, at least most of us thought so. Mr. Franklin wasn't too happy though. Utah State won 21-16. Oh well, maybe next year Accompanists — Faye R Sonia S. Judy Lisa - Who says ya' can't make a living being a bum? The story was told through the eyes of a little girl, portrayed by Shebi Bondegard. Cliff Grimes portrayed the grandfather, and Chris Skov portrayed Timothy. Ross Diercks narrated. The main idea behind the cantata was the fact that Christmas has changed so much over the years. Somehow, among ail the shuffle and excitement over presents and gifts, we have lost the true meaning of Christmas. 20 Boys Octet-Swing Choir Boys There is nothin' like a Dame. Girls Octet —Swing Choir Girls ' You Light Up My Life. The MA C. Music Contest was held in Leyton on April 8th. We had two medal winners: Lisa Franklin, alto sax solo; and Sandi Skov, Tenor sax solo. The trumpet trio on the trophy for the best instrumental ensemble. They are the first eighth graders from Lodge Pole to receive a trophy in music so we are very proud of them. We received nine superior ratings, and twenty excellants. The spring concert was held on May 1st, in which many of the contest entries were performed Special guests were the Tennessee Ridge-Runner All Male Quintet. Below: Girls Duet Faye and Becky Rankin The District Music Contest was held in Scottsbluff April 24th. We had twenty-four entries, so there was quite a bus-load On the way back we stopped at Godfather's. I guess Dad (Mr. Franklin) thought we were good kids for once and deserved a treat. 22 GODSPELL In the opening scene of GODSPELL these robots portray how humans are like robots before they see the light of God, and how |ohn the Baptist gave them the light by baptisting them. GODSPELL - is a musical based on a modern day version of the gospel of St. Matthew. Gospel'' means good news. The word GODSPELL plays off this word. In the play we presented the good news: and also the cast tried to create a spell of God, which meant showing love and kindness to the audience. Many people laughed and cried during the performance, which was said to be one of the best plays Lodgepole has ever done. But it wasn't that easy to get ready for the play. Many grueling hours were spent learning the music and also the lines. Robby, who played Jesus, was the only one who had to really spend alot of time learning lines. The rest of the cast performed little skits about different parts of the gospel of St. Matthew The play focused on the parables of Jesus who was played by Robby Ommen. The historical element occured when Judas, Bob Campbell, betrayed Jesus. Other than this, the play consisted of parable-pantomine enacted by the clowns who represented human kind, the clowns were played by: Julie Mika, Rena Block, Sandi Skov, Ron lessen, Kent Sick, John Bartling, Nancy Namuth, Deb Buss. The light crew was Cliff Grimes, Kurt Huff, Randy Anderson, and Ron Ommen. The director was Mr. Diercks, who was in charge of all the wild animals, and the musical director was Mr. Franklin along with Mr. Rolaids Faye Rankin and Judy Fraass played accompaniment. On the drums —Chuck Davis; Sonia Sick played electric piano; also Joyce Franklin played the organ. Above: Robby, playing lesus, is singing the song All For The Best and telling people that things happen for the best. Below: Nancy plays the Sex Symbol of GODSPELL. Above right: Bob, Julie, and John are doing the Sunday School scene and playing weeds that are choking the good seed of God (Julie). Below right: Robby and Snoopy are telling the audience the wonderful things earth has to provide. Above: In the Good Samaritan scene, Rena plays a priest who ignores a wounded man — much like today's society does Below: Bob counters Robby on the song All For The Best . Above left: Mr. and Mrs. Franklin are watching intensely at one of the GODSPELL rehearsal. Below left: Mr. Diercks and Faye are two non-union personnel who worked for very low wages as guitarist and pianist. Center: Robby is portraying )esus when he died on the cross. The Last Supper By the time lesus had died, the whole audience was up on stage with the cast. When he was carried through the audience, many people cried for his death and felt very sad. Even though lesus did die on the cross, he still lives in our hearts and minds. These pictures can only really touch the feeling each person felt when the final performance of CODSPELL was performed on April 11, 1980 after being canceled 2 times due to weather. But the real meaning of GODSPELL was to show that God provided alot of love to everyone; and if people showed this love to whomever they meet on the street, this world would be full of the love of God. 26 One Act— House of Stairs frjfl Clockwise: Julie, who plays Abigil, is by the food machine waithing for the next time food will appear out of it; Cliff Grimes, who played Doctor Lawerence, performed the some what bizarre experiment; Robby, who played Peter, and Nancy, who played Lola both are discussing how to get the others not to eat any of the food because the machine will not produce unless some sort of violence triggers it off. _____________ House of Stairs Cast Observers Cliff Grimes................. Second Row: Coach Mencke, Rena Block, Julie Mika, Sandi Skov, )udy Grimes, Nancy Namuth, Shebi Bondegard. The girls basketball team posted a 5-8 record this year. They were led by the outstanding play of Sandi Skov and Julie Mika, who were named Cocaptains and Co-Most Valuable Player. Sandi also led the team in three other categories: free throw champ —shooting 6; rebound leader — 142, and scoring — 12 points per game average. Her presense on the floor was always an added strength for the Panthers. Julie tied with Nancy and Rean for second place in the scoring rank. Julie was the playmaker and spark of the team. She, along with Nancy, had some unfortunate problems with fouls; and while both figured highly in the statistics, their positive input was often missed, and the lack of depth hurt Lodgepole in many close games. Rena led the backcourt duo and took handle of pressure defense. )udy Grimes, who was selected Most Improved Player, added rebounding strength and scoring punch. 30 Julie Mika and Rena Block were the backcourt duo. Sandi Skov, leading rebounder, sets position underneath. ludy Crimes came off the bench to add defensive and rebounding strength. 31 Awards Night 32 Academic Awards BUSINESS EDUCATION AWARDS iookkeeping - Cliff Crimes vanced Typing -Roslin Nielson beginning Typing-Kevin Campbell ENGLISH AWARDS Freshmen - Julie Bartling Sophomore - Shebi Bondegard Junior - Nancy Namuth Senior - Cliff Crimes HOME ECONOMICS Julie Bartling INDUSTRIAL ARTS AWARDS Mechanical Drawing - Nancy Namuth Beginning Woods — Nancy Namuth Advanced Woods — Jami Bond OUTSTANDING SENIOR Kurt Huff SCIENCE AWARDS Terminal Science - Sandi Skov Advanced Science-Jami Bond, John Bartiling General Science - Julie Bartling Physics - Cliff Grimes Biology - Judy Grimes, Shebi Bondegard DRIVERS EDUCATION Phil Narjes Shebi Bondegard GERMAN AWARDS German I - Galen Bartling German II — Nancy Namuth DRAMATICS AWARDS Nancy Namuth Julie Mika Robby Ommen HISTORY AWARDS American Government — Cliff Grimes American History — Nancy Namuth World History — Judy Grimes Geography — Julie Bartling MATH AWARDS Cliff Grimes Randy Anderson 7TH GRADES ART Shelly Rufenact Terry Slingsby Dena Zalesky 8TH GRADE ART Lisa Franklin 10TH GRADE ART Steve Mika LIBRARY Rena Block Faye Dickinson A” HONOR ROLL AWARDS Seniors: Cliff Grimes, Ron lessen Juniors: Nancy Namuth Sophomores: Shebi Bondegard Freshmen: Sonia Sick, Julie Bartling JUNIOR BAND AWARD Sandi Skov JUNIOR CHOIR AWARD John Bartling KATHY LARREAU MEMORIAL AWARD Debbie Buss OUTSTANDING SENIOR MUSICIAN Faye Rankin JUNIOR HIGH HONOR ROLL Kevin Campbell Shelly Rufenacht Terry Slingsby Dena Zalesky Athletic Banquet Kent Sick — Outstanding Senior Athlete Julie Mika and Sandi Skov — Co-captain Basketball Rob Ommen and )ohn Frerichs - Co-captain Football Rena Block — All Conference Volleyball Ron lessen and Bob Campbell — Most Valuable Track Rob Ommen — Don Sprengel Sportsmanship Award 34 Athletic Banquet FOOTBALL AWARDS Co-Captains: Rob Ommen, |ohn Frerichs Most Valuable Player: |ohn Frerichs Most Improved Player: Phil Narjes Monster Man: John Frerichs VOLLEYBALL AWARDS Co-Captains: Julie Mika, Debbie Buss MAC 1st team spiker and top team spiker: Julie Mika MAC 1st team setter and co-top team setter: Rena Block MAC 2nd team server and Top Team server: Sandi Skov, Co-too setter: Rosie Nielson BOYS BASKETBALL Co-Captains: Kent Sick, Randy Anderson Top Free Throw Percentage jami Bond Leading Rebounder: Kent Sick Mr. Diercks observes Jim Stone, the speaker from the University of Wyoming at Laramie GIRLS BASKETBALL Co-Captains: Julie Mika, Sandi Skov Most Valuable Players: Julie Mika, Sandi Skov Most Improved Player: Judy Grimes Rebound Champ: Sandi Skov Free Throw Champ: Sandi Skov BOYS TRACK Co-Outstanding Tracksters: Ron lessen. The team showed considerable improvement throughout the year. We played all of our opponents close only to see victory slip away in the final minutes. Senior Kent Sick lead the team in scoring and rebounding for the second straight year. He and fellow senior Randy Anderson provided the fans with some excellent play. Other members of the team who made tremendous contributions were seniors Rob Ommen and Kurt Huff; Juniors, Ron Ommen, Jami Bond, Bob Campbell and Mike From; Sophomores, Randy Ommen, Steve Mika and Jon Bruns; and Freshman Ken Hodges and Keith Huff. Lodgepole's youth should provide an improved team next year. The junior varsity enjoyed a fine 10-4 season and will help make Lodgepole better in 1981. 36 Some question about the call . We each have had our share of problems, but along with that, our share of joy and happiness. We each have grown and learned many things since that first day of high school in August, 1976. We have made many friends, a few enemies, but most of all we've learned to love. There are so many people who have helped make us what we are today. Teachers, parents, best friends-the list is endless. But the thing that really counts is the fact that we can love each other. I think we are all a little bit scarred of what the future holds for each of us, and we dread going our separate ways. It's a big step. But the love and happiness we've shared with each other these past four years will somehow, someway, take us to greater things and a brighter future. 47 Seniors Randy Anderson Football, Basketball.
