W' ,L F HA'ers Work Together for a Common Goal Future Homemakers of America is the organization of high school home economics students dedicated to the over-all goal of helping individuals improve personal family and community living, now and in the future. Any high school student who is enrolled in a home ec- onomics class is eligible to become a member. In Oklahoma, there are more than 18, OOO members in both large and small high schools throughout the state. Nationally, the membership is more than 700, OOO. Objectives are selected every three to four years. Projects are selected to carry out these objectives. This year's national projects are Decisions that Count, Our World -a-Growing Heritage, and Preparedness-The Key to Opportunity. A concern for the individual as he or she matures is a part of the FHA philosophy. Family living projects, extended into school and community, help both indi- viduals and groups. These are a part of the FHA pro- gram. The local chapter does such things as attending a sub-district rally where Susan Coger was elected sec- retary, and selling stationery, calendars, and cook- books to raise money to attend the state rally in March. Under head coach Glen Lang and assistants Bob Alderson and Mike Minick, the 1971 Pirates faced a strong group of conference foes -- Wagoner, Vinita, Nowata, Catoosa, Stilwell, and jay. The mounting excitement of the football season payed off, as the Locust Grove team improved their 1970 record of O - 9 to 2 wins and 7 losses for 1971. With the multiple offensive system of Coach Lang, the Pirates were able to obtain a much more consis- tent leadership of the eight seniors on the squad. Lo- cust Grove was at any time capable of playing ex- cellent ball. This was, perhaps, proven the best when the Pirates upset heavily-favored Catoosa on Home- coming, for the highlight of the season. Ft. Gibson's stalwant defense constantly gave the offense fine field position, but the Tigers could only eke out an 8-O victory over Locust Grove in the season opener for both teams. A 4-yard scamper around right end in the waning moments of the third period by Ricky Kirkhart was all the scoring that was needed to assure the Tigers of a victory. Kirkhart added the 2-point conversion on the option play. Locust Grove, led by the hard running of senior halfback Alvin Harris, had hopes of ending a 10- game losing streak. However, the inability to take advantage of Ft. Gibson errors and an inconsistent offensive attack prevented the Pirates from providing the home crowd with a win. arlene S atterfleld and lewls coverdell football royalty 'T f- an , - 6 1 I f 53 64 - 'A ii! Playing before the home crowd, the Locust Grove Pirates ended an 11-game losing streak at the expense of the Kansas Comets, by a verdict of 12-O in a wet, slippery ball game. The game was marred throughout with major penalties and errant ball- handling. The first touchdown for the Pirates was set up on a fine interception by junior linebacker Tandy Cooper, who grabbed the ball at the Kansas 28 and returned it to the eight. Bert Wallace took it in from there on a sweep around left-end. The attempted kick for P.A.T. was wide. The remainder of the first half was pretty much a stalemate until Kansas mishandled a pitchout on their own 48-yard line. An alert David Cowan picked up the loose ball and had clear sailing into the end zone for the insurance touchdown with time nearly out in the half. The conversion attempt once again failed. The entire second-half saw major penalties nullify any hopes of a scoring drive for either team. The closest scoring opportunity was a drive by Kansas to the Locust Grove 10-yard line that was halfed when the clock ran out. Bert Wallace led the defensive heroics for Locust by making 14 unassisted and 4 assisted tackles from his defensive safety position. The Wagoner Bulldogs showed why they are the coaches pre-season pick to win the 2A-6 conference race, by thomping Locust before the Pirate home fans. The final score read 29-O. The first offensive series of the game saw Wagoner completing a tricky half-back pass for the first tally. The first quarter continued to be very productive for the Bulldogs as they surmounted a 20-point lead. The only bright spot for Locust Grove was the outstanding defensive play of safety Bert Wallace, who on numerous occasions made unassisted tackles at the line of scrimmage. Running the Wishbone-Triple Option with fine efficiency enabled the Vinita Hornets to stop the Locust Grove Pirates 35-8 before the Vinita home- coming crowd. After a scoreless first quarter the Hornets gathered an amazingly quick 27 points in the second stanza. Two of the scores came on long bomb pass plays in which the speedy Vinita receivers were well behind the secondary of the Pirates. A picked-up fumble taken into the Locust Grove end-zone from ten yards out provided anothereasy TD for Vinita, and the Hornets mustered a sustanied drive for the other tally. The second half action saw a stand-off as each team scored only once. Neither offense could really jell in the letter stages of the contest. Locust Grove's Pirates had aspirations of upsetting Nowata's homecoming, and it appeared such would be the case--at least for the first half. The Pirates inspired defense came up with crucial plays several times to keep the lronmen scoreless the first two quarters. Defensive guard Mike Teague made fine tackles at the line of scrimmage on numerous occasions, but the inabliity of the Locust Grove offense to move with consistency was the decisive factor in the outcome of the game. Locust Grove put the first points on the board midway in the first quarter when senior halfback Alvin Harris went over from the 2-yard line after a 40-yard drive had set up the score. Timely interceptions by Eddie Walling, David Cowan, and Bert Wallace got the Pirates out of desperate jam. The deciding factor came when Harris picked up a Catoosa fumble at the Locust 9, turned on the speed, and sent into the end zone untouched for the go-ahead touchdown. jeff Henson, leading scorer and leading rusher for the undefeated 7th 8 Sth grade, prepares to kick off into the end-zone against Wagoner. Tenth rated Coweta almost scored at will in the seventh game of the season, at times with the aid of major penalties. Coweta's awesome ground game relentlessly wore down the smaller, but never-say- die , defense of Locust. The Pirates lost a 47-20 high scoring conference affair at the hands of the Stilwell Indians. Locust's three scores came on a 15-yard interception by Lewis Coverdell, a pass-lateral for 75 yards from De arl Cunningham to end Tandy Cooper to halfback Eddie Walling, and a 10-yard pass from quarterback Cunningham to Lewis Coverdell. Ending the season with a disappointing 26-6 loss to jay, the Pirates finished with a 2-7 record in the first rebuilding season of Coach Glen Lang. Pirate-ettes Next the female Pirates overran Morris 45 -27. The game got off with a slow start, neither team scoring well. The Pirates came back the second half and scored 27 points to the Eagles 10. Henson led with 20, Hanna with 11, Bryant with 6, Condit and Ballou both with 3. The Pirate-ettes triumphed over Salina 53-24. Locust Grove actually aided Salina in making one-third of their points --- eight of Salina's points resulted from fouling by the Pirates. The rash of scoring was headed by Hanna and Henson with 18 and 16. In what seemed to be a crucial game, the Pirates trailed from the 1st quarter, 6-9, to suffer the 6th and final loss of the regular season play, 36-4-4, from Muldrow. Hanna scored 18 against the Bulldogs, followed by Ballou and Henson with 10 and 6. The Locust Grove Pirates met the Sperry Pirates on their home court February 14. The girls, having beaten Sperry at Sperry, looked for an easy victory. Although in the first half it ap- peared that Locust would have a tough time, they came out of it with a 5-point lead, 28-23, at intermission.
