WITNESSES: GREGORY Pack MACKENZIE U-IULIETH RATHGEBER E1NsTE1N CUMMINGS joAN D,ARCn LEHMAN Glimpses of Progress The first schools were started in Lock Haven by parents and old-time schoolmastersg the schools closed often because the teachers did not receive their ay. In 1858 the school board spent one hundred forty-Eve dollars for fences around the school building to keep out the cows. In 1859 there were six teachers in Lock Haven, three men and three women, and school ran for ten months. The most highly paid person was the princi al, who received the enormous sum of sixty dollars per month. In 1855 there were approximately forty Negro children in this vicinity who needed schooling. For them, school only lasted four months out of a year. The first three-story school building was built in 1868 and was on the site of the present junior high school. By 1914 this school was too small, and it was condemned because the third floor swa ed when the wind blew hard. It was tom clbwn to make way for the present junior high school. Here are a few of the changes that have come with the years: From the graduating class of two in 1876, we have grown to approximately two hundred twenty-six in 1955. The junior and senior high school faculties have sixty teachers to- day compared with the three of eighty years ago. Back in 1878 when botany was introduced into the high school curriculum, it was con- sidered a big event because at last the cur- riculum was beginning to expand. The sub- jects that were added later such as astronomy and mythology proved to be of little or no value to the boys and girls who took these subjects. Today we have the facilities for a well- rounded education in practically every course desired. The students who graduate from Lock Haven Senior High School are ready to meet the outside world in their every-day life. Thus we say good-bye to the past, speak of the present, and look ahead to what the future holds in store for us. KEYSTON E TAXI Jahelkais Confectionery 442 Bellefonte Ave. WILBUR H.
