Moore and Snowiss were on the first post-war debating and public speaking teams and have three years to their credit, while Greta Weaver has two years of debating and three years of public speaking. Verden Thomas was a member of the Forensic League during her senior year, doing humorous and dramatic decla- mations. They have participated in numerous speech and debating events and in 1946 and 1947 were on the team that won the Central District Champion- ship and went on to compete in the finals of the state at Johnstown and York. When the Gazette went to press the Debating team and Public Speakers had just returned from a barnstorming trip through Pennsylvania, where they entered a speech tournament at Monessen and debated teams from Monessen, Charleroi, and Donora, followed by a tournament at Camp Hill in which the debaters took first place. Moore and Snowiss have participated in over sixty debates and Weaver in over forty, while all three hold high degrees in the National Forensic League, of which Lock Haven High School is one of the select members. 50 First Row, Loft to Right-Ilm-ls-n Yoxthc-imer, Ruth Matter, Mnrion Fox, Janet Peters, Junlve Marshall. This year's club has carried on such activities as movies, group swimming at the college pool, discussions, and chapel programs. This year several members attended the Older Boys Conference at Williamsport. Here We got more ideas for our own club and exchanged ideas with other Hi-Y clubs. At the conference there was a very good program that helped our representatives intel- lectually. Also many of them found new friends all over the state. The annual sale of senior name cards was carried on by the Hi-Y this year and the proceeds of these were used to pay for films and the swimming. 52 First Row, Left to Rightellenrietta Irwin, June Bieksler, Missie Kopetan, Margie Laehat, Jean Manvk, Eleanor Potratz, Betty Rogers, Pat Vilello, Flossie Dirk, Jackie Berry, Colleen Ohl, Rhoda Grand. Each member must compete in some form of public speaking which in- cludes such types of speaking as humorous and dramatic declamations, orations, radio speaking, and extemporaneous speaking, or be a member of the debating squad. The speakers and debaters are coached by Mrs. M. C. Ricker, who started debating eighteen years ago and has been at the coaching reins ever since, in which time she has produced many successful speakers and championship debate teams. At the time the GAZETTE went to print, the debaters had won laurels in a contest at the University of Pittsburgh, achieved first place in the National Forensic League Tournament, and had made appearances at the Exchange and Civic Clubs. Ahead are various contests and appearances including the Pennsylvania State eliminations. The Forensic Club has advanced a great deal since its first contests after a four-year lay-off during the war years, and has once more acquired the position it held in pre-war years as one of the best clubs in the state. It has required plenty of time, money, and hard work on the part of the members and the coach, but it can't be said that it was not worth it. 68 First Row, Left to Right-Verden Thoinas, John Moore, Ruth Mott:-r. From this one member was selected for State Orchestra. All County Band was held again this year at Lock Haven and at Renovo in May. The schools participating were Renovo, Loganton, Saint Marys and Lock Haven. Also in May the annual Spring Concert was successfully presented. LOCK HAVEN 0 -JERSEY SHORE 13 The Bulldogs proved too much for the Bobcats by two touchdowns in a hard fought contest. LOCK HAVEN 6 -BELLEFONTE 6 Improvement was seenibut the Indians held us to a 6-6 stalemate. LOCK HAVEN 13 - MT. CARMEL TWP. 6 The Purple finally hit the win column at the expense of the coal miners. LOCK HAVEN 0 - HUNTINGDON 6 The Bobcats dropped a heartbreaker, being on the 7 yard line at the final whistle. LOCK HAVEN 26 -MILTON 13 In a breath-taking game played at Bucknell Stadium, Lewisburg, Pa., the Bobcats found the range for the first time in the season, and looked good in winning by two touchdowns. LOCK HAVEN 0-TYRONE 7 The Western Conference Champs had a hard time subduing the Bobcats by a lone touchdown. LOCK HAVEN 20-SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT 0 The Mountaineers proved no match as the Bobcats began their winning ways again. LOCK HAVEN 41 - MT. UNION 7 This clash turned out to be a runaway, the Bobcats using every available player and ramming ahead of the rivals to a glorious victory. LOCK HAVEN 19-LEWISTOWN 7 The Purple continued to win, turning back the fighting Panthers by a 19-7 final score. LOCK HAVEN 20-WILLIAMSPORT 7 The Bobcats reached their peak in subduing the rival Cherry and White in the Third Street Stadium at Billtown. This was a thrilling ending to the '47 Football Season inas- much as the Bobcat-Millionaire game is always one of great rivalry. Lettermen from last year's Varsity and the unbeaten Jayvee team combined their talents this year to give Coach I. V. Davis one of his best teams. Although hampered in the early part of the season by the Polio quarantine, they progressed as the season went on and finished at a commendable pace. Fourteen boys played their last for L. H. H. S. They are as follows: Right end-John McAndrew, Robert Jacobs. Left end-Kenneth Fisher, Donald Solomon. Right tackle-Gerard Fasano. Quarterback-Robert Ganoe, john Keller. Right Guard--Dean Heimer Left halfback-james Cross, Donald Slopey. Center--Dean Johnson. Right halfback-Thomas Jolloff. Left guard-John Harvey, Alfred Thomas. Fullback-Lewis Herr Senior Manager, Harry Raymond, also did an outstanding job during the three years he worked with the team. 75 SENICDR PLAYERS 1 A First Row, Left to IlightfJam-k Lehman, Hill Snyder, De-:ln Johnson. All the girls, both city and out-of-town students participated in the games. Teams were organized and gym classes were used as practice periods. The teams totaled thirteen, plus a team from the Immaculate Conception School. Most of the teams did very well this year. Of course, there were a few outstanding ones. It was a close call between two of our best teams this year and it took a neck- in-neck race to decide the championship team. The winning teams were the Pepcats and the Whiz's. Lois Bryan's Pepcats were the final victors of the year. Their team, which is pictured above was deserving of the championship. The girls all worked to- gether and worked hard to win the championship. Some of the other teams that ran close competition were the Cubs, Brownies, Wild- cats, and Kittens. Much credit is due to Mrs. McCloskey and a number of the student teachers from the college who were willing to give their time in refereeing the games. 87 Girls' Soccer eam ! ',w lirst Row.
