THE BANN ER 29 books especrallv the cleanness of the old ones caught mv attentron I fir t examrned the old books and found that some of them were by well known authors of the past Most of Shake peare s works were there and books by Drckens Scott J Fenrmore Cooper and oth rs I looked many or what 1t would be lrke to have lrved rn the trme of these men would have been authors lrved rn our day From the works of the e great men I moved on to books of a more modern perrod of trme In lookrng at them I compared them rn my mrnd wrth the books I had just been examrnrng The stvle of wrrtrng of years ago was much drfferent from the style of today The wrrtlngs of to day are much easler to understand than those of the sevent enth and erghteenth cen turres But the novels of the seventeenth and erghteenth centurres are consrdered more carefully wrrtten than tho e of today Wrth thrs thought rn mrnd I purchased three of the books wrrtter by Drckens As I have sard there are many places where one can find omethrng of rnterest A book these ov er and wondered I wondered how drfferent therr wrrtrngs had thes tore rs one of the most rnterestrng of th se I never expect to spend a mor rnterestrng afternoon than I drd on that ramy day Robert Fogg 36 THE FORGOTTEN DAY E always have had them and alway w1ll exclarmed Mr Slouchwalk as he rarsed hrs eves from hrs paper What have we always had'P asked hrs wrfe strarghtenrng from her washboard ov er whrch she had been scrubb ng for the past hour Are you referrrng to the weekly wash'P I was not ejaculated Slouchwalk and slcuched out of the krtchen The Mrs re sumed her labor ov er the steamrng tub Thrs good natured housewrfe was no drffer ent from the rest of us and so she contrnued to speculate about what thev had alwav had At twelve oclock the couple sat down to a drnner of corn meal mush whrch was al wavs the menu on washday Before the meal was finrshed a knock cam on the door The tax assessor' Mr Slouch walks afternoon was spent rn showrng hrs farm to the assessor Mrs Slouchwalk drd her' drshes and dressed rn her one and only good dress set forth to call on a srck frrend At exactly four oclock sh brd her frrend a pleasant good afternoon and started home On the way she called at the post offrce for the marl The countrv store keeper was loudly exclarmrng about the hardshrps of farmer w hrle the a sessor stood and lrstened It cant be helped sard the assessor as the store keeper grumbled the word Taxes Mrs Slouchwalk resumed the Journey to the house on the top of the hrll Taxes must have been the thrng her husband sard they always had and always would have Satr fr d at last she entered the krtchen and carefully prepared the ev enrng meal Evemng was Mr Slouchwalks welcome as he entered the room As the two ate the conversatron changed from one subject to an other untrl at last Mrs Slouchwalk asked Were you thrnkrng of taxes when you sard We had always had them? THE BANNER ous companlon But this quarrelsome young gentleman also made a hurrled departure as the two remalnrng antagonists syooped down upon hrm and sent him about hrs own business ThLs battle between such trny warriors was of exceptional rnterest To see such tmy dell cate spring brrds before a background of autumn leaves drd seem most unu ual It would seem that sprlng yyas makrng her last stand by allowing her blue brrds to remain untrl the final moment Fall Davs and the Frolrcs of a Krtten HE fall days had at last arrrved and the leaves began to fall rn glittering showers upon the once green ground The brrd too seemed to know that fall had come as dld Marla who slowly made h r way down the long wrndmg lane rn search of her fro rcsome kitten Perhaps the krtten realrzed that the ground would not long b covered with nature s frrsky toys for him to play w1th Perhaps he also knew that soon a cold white blanket would no longer toss the ever dancing leaves rnto the a1r Feeling very lonely and desiring the com pamonshlp of her lrvely kltten Marla had lard as de her dolls put on her coat and started down the pleasant lane rn search of the elusrve krtten Whrl callmg softly she espred hrm romprng rn a pile of beautiful golden red leaves a gay and frrsky as the fall wrnds them e'ves Suddenly an unusually trong gust of wrnd sent the leaves whrrlrn rn all dlrectrons So strong was th1s mxnla ture whrrlwrnd that the bed of the unsuspect rn kitten was natched sky high causmg hrm to leap rnto the arr then turn ard run with a ruffled back and crooked tall Marla stood by and shook with laught r a her poor pet made a mad cramble up a tree trunk It was then that Maria ceased her lauffhrng and bounded after he frlghter u kitten She finally caught him and star ed toward home just as the sun was yyrshrng the leaves a soft good night Edith MCCTl1'1S 36 THE TRANIP MAN I saw the other day would make a yery rnterestrng prcture He was a tramp .1 man of short stature yyrth coarse hardened features Hrs han was brown and seemed never to haye been combed Hrs face was fat and yery drrty Red eyes and a yery red and swollen n se completed hrs facial drsadyan tag s He was dressed rn a tattered coat and a parr of pants of which the patches held mot of th colors of the rainbow In sprte of these patches hrs knees were exposed to the a1r as were hrs elbows Hrs shoes were cracked and broken and from them peeped defiantly seyeral dirty toes He walked w1th a limp and rn one hand was clenched a mur derous lookrng and evrl smelling prpe He made a very striking picture as he sat on a neighbors door step and ate Wlth many flourrshes a drnner he had begged As I looked at th1s plece of forlorn human rty I wondered how far and how long he had traveled how manv places and strange srghts he had seen What a life' The lrfe of a hobo w1th no home no where to go cannot be a pleasant one The hardshrps he encounters are to him but darly happenrngs I wonder rf I ever shall be rn the condrtron of that man?
