Student Body Officers . War. H ,H W - sf ' -E. x DON GRUSIN I was born in Denver, April, 1941, and I have lived in Littleton ever since. I saw our school grow from 400 students to today's 1,060. With this growth I have witnessed an increased understanding and cooperation between faculty and students. I think that today we have the best student body that Littleton has seen. I am proud to have been a part of this educational institu- tion. Many happy years of progress to LHS. CLIFF CARY I was born in Los Angeles, California, in April, 1942, and lived there and in Nebraska most of my life. I moved to Littleton in 1955 and entered ninth grade in the old high school. My parents moved to Littleton because of its school system, and I can see now that they made a wise choice. I've had more fun here in the last four years than I could have had anywhere else. Besides that, I think I've received the finest education possible any- where. You underclassmen have a great opportunity ahead, and I hope you have as much fun and gain as much at LHS as I have. PAT SWAN SON I have lived in Littleton all of my life. I was born in Denver and have enjoyed living in Colorado. My years at Littleton High School have been ones that Iill never forget. The friends I've made and good times throughout these learning experiences are things I will always remember as I go on through college. My closing thought to underclassmen is to take advantage of the oppor- tunities to learn not only in the class room but through extracurricular activities as well. IANELL STEWART I was born in Madison, Kansas, and lived there for ten years. I moved to Littleton when I was twelve and began my first year in the Littleton public school system as a seventh grader. Each year more and better subjects are being offered to the students of Littleton High School. I encourage all of you to take the fullest advantage of your many opportunities while you can. The 1958-59 Wrestling season was one of the most successful the Lions have ever had. Beaten only once in the pre-league season and only twice during the league season, Littleton turned out one of the most powerful mat-squads in the area. Grati- tude must he given to Coach Miles Benda for inspiring the grapplers to do Herculean tasks. Just finished is Mr. Benda's fourth season at L.H.S. He has brought the Littleton mat squads from the weak-sister class to a position where even the largest and most powerful schools in this part of the state fear and respect the LIONS. Credit is also due to Coach Lynn Fey for being B squad mentor. The B squad had a very successful season also. This is an indication of the future L.H.S.Vwrestling teams to come. LITTLETON STATIONERS 8: PRINTERS The Lion, Congratulates Anne McLucas, senior forensics student, who won the state I Speak for Democracy contest, besting over 100 other contestants. She received an expense- paid trip to Washington, D. C., to compete in the national contest held in February. Below is a sum- mary of her winning speech. ANNE MCLUCAS I speak for Democracy. I speak in a voice joyous with the shouts of a unified people, loud and clear with the resolution of a proud people. My voice roars with the sounds of prosperity-the rumble of traffic, the scream of a factory whistle, the clink of change on a counter, the drone of a busy office. My voice sighs with the sound 'of wind through the fields of wheat or a tall forest. My voice is the bellow of a sergeant ordering his menz, it is the sweet child singing My Country 'Tis of Thee. My voice is that of a timid Yugoslavian immigrant reading from the Statue of Liberty . . . Give me your tired, your poor, your wretched masses yearning to breathe free . . . My voice rumbles with the firing of each cannong it is spectacular with the shouts of each victory, it breaks with the groans of each dying man. My voice is the soft one of a Catholic girl saying, Hail Mary, full of grace . . . - of a Jewish boy reading from the Torah-or a Protestant family singing A Mighty Fortress is Our God. My voice is rhythmic with the dances of a happy people and the spirituals of a sad people, rhythmic with the solemn chant of a church service and the tantalizing beat of a jazz band. My voice is the voice of a thousand patriotic men-a teacher about to be hanged as a spy . . . I regret that I have but one life to give for my country . . Y'-a fiery orator . . . Give me liberty, or give me death . . . -a gentle leader . . . L'Govern- ment of the people, by the people, and for the people. My voice speaks all languages: the fast Italian of the waiter at Mario's, the soft French of the pastry chef, the guttural German of the grocer, the musical Japanese of the family next door, and the Rabbi's beautiful Hebrew. It is made up of all accentsg it is the clipped speech of a New England store clerk, it's the slow drawl of a Southern planter, it has the twang of a Midwestern farmer's voice and the gruffness of a miner's. It is as high as that of the singing teacher who lives down the block, as low as the New York dock worker's. But my voice is not heard as cacophonyg the many voices, the different sounds, blend into one voice speaking for Democracy. For this is Democracy. Each indi- vidual voice is heard, but the effect is that of one. Alone, the individual would be lostg but intermingling with others, it is part of one clear voice, speaking for Democracy. ' I speak in a voice joyous with the shouts of a unified people, loud and clear with the resolution of a proud people. I speak for Democracy.
