f 17'Wff7,v f Cries fe Trieste had its beginning in about the Twelfth Century B.C., with the building of a prehistoric fortified village on the hill of St. Giustoq The city's history since that time is quite complex. It has been ruled by the Romans, Goths, Byzantines, Lombards, Charlemagne and the Austrians. In 1918, as a result of World War I, the city became a part of Italy. After World War II the city and province became disputed territory. A settlement gave Trieste to Italy and the majority of the remainder of the area to Yugoslavia. , We found much of interest in and around Trieste. In the center of the city is the old Roman Theatre and high above it on the site of the ancient city, is the castle and cathedral of St. Giusto with a beautiful view of the city. At nearby Miramare we visited the lovely cas- tle build by Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg Prior to his journey to Mexico. At Barcola- Cedas we found a Triestine riviera with a mag- nificent esplanade and many retaurants and inns for relaxation, while some of us were drawn even further away to incomparable Venice.
